Daily Bird Photos - Page 374

I didn't think there were any bugs around as cold as it has been, their color is very pretty, and I was glad to be able to put it on my lifer list. Do you think if I mounted my suet feeder on the tree, the woodpeckers would come more often? I keep thinking the red-bellied don't come because the suet feeder swings in the wind. Do you think if I sprinkleed chili powder on the suet cakes the squirrels would leave them alone? They really have not bothered it too much where it is, but I am worried about fastening to the tree. Any advice would be helpful.

They also sell Hot Pepper suet. Thats what I have in my trees. You could try what your talking of doing. Does your suet feeder have a chain or solid loop for a handle.?

You could loop the chain over a branch like I have done here and reconnected the chain on the other side of the feeder letting it rest against the trunk of the tree. The chain will have to be long enough.

Sorry for this old pic but it's all I could find on short notice.

Ditto to Pelle. My hot pepper suet (store bought) is on the tree by a chain, where the squirrels have access. They are not very interested. The home made peanut butter stuff is baffled.

Mount Pleasant Mills, PA(Zone 5a)

Great shots everyone.

We as did a lot of folks had major icing here today. I had a lot of fun watching the birds land in the back yard area to get seeds. They would go skidding right on by their intended target.

Here is a Mourning Dove that was slipping and sliding.

I wish we had Bluebirds here, but I think there are too many sparrows. But the bb are very pretty, that last one looks like he was saying, ok here I am, take my pic.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Wow you all have been busy. Amazing shots of your birds.
Wild-Rose,thanks for the new thread, beautiful opening with the Eagle. the gold of the reflecting sun on the water is very nice with the Mallards.

Took this shot of the Chickadee holding his meal with it's cute little feet.

This Common Redpolls are here all day long. I think I've spotted the Hoary among the crowd. I will try to get a shot of it, when he's separated from the others.

He is beautiful anyway, they are so bright against the snow, speaking of snow, we are supposed to get 2-3 inches tomorrow and freezing rain today. Won't that make it nice and slippery? How is your new computer coming along Hackster? I bet you are having fun trying to get everything you had on your old one on your new one. Good luck.

It warmed up a little for a couple days and my birds started disappearing. I can always count on the Mourning Doves to be here.

I made a reciepe for the squirrels today. I put bread crumbs out and took the sunflower seeds and put some Sudden Death hot sauce on them and mixed it up good. Put the bread down on the platform first and put the seeds down on top, the squirrels came down to investigate, there are still bread crumbs and seeds on the platform. They did not scream or rub their eyes, they got a bite, shook their heads and took off across the street. I think they might have finally gotten the message, I was just out there and took a stick, and spread the pile that was left around. You DO not want to get this stuff in your eyes or smell it, it WILL mess you up. Thankfully there is enough snow around that they will cool down sooner or later, I just can't afford to feed the squirrels and birds too, and I am running out of bread then all I will have is sunflower seeds. A friend of mine the next time he comes up will bring some more sunflower seeds.

South Hamilton, MA

Glad that it worked..I don't reccomment feeding bread to birds, not their natural food.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Had a new "yard bird" on Sunday -- a beautiful Pine Warbler.

Elphaba, how in the world did you get a picture of a RC Kinglet? They don't stand still for a second!

oh, cute pine warbler!!! I want one!

Duck, I checked out your forecast and I'm really jealous. Even if the sun warms chases away the birds!

bunch of house finchies at the diner. They've been here in good numbers. That's nothing new for this time of year though.

The reason that I put bread out is that I can't afford just sunflower seeds. Here they are expensive and money is kinda short right now. But the bread is running out so they are going to go on a diet anyway, I will feed them just a few seeds in the morning and then thats it until the next day. I will continue to put the hot sauce on the seeds until the squirrels get the idea that the seeds are not for them. I could feed the squirrels in the backyard but I can't get a camera there, it is not feasible to try to run a wire all the way out there, and there is no window that looks out in the back. There used to be a bedroom in the back but a ice storm several years back totalled the room and the landlord tore it off because it was in such bad shape. So they walled it up and no window. Must be a hawk around, I have only seen one bird all morning and that was a Nuthatch.

Marlton, NJ

Hi Loonie, That is such a cute pic of the Pine Warbler!

Mrs Ed, Love that feeder! Nice shot!

Port Elizabeth, South Africa(Zone 10a)

VA - love the Gouldian finch - I also had many species when I was young - it was the greatest for me and helped to foster my love for birds. (thanks dad!) They are pretty, but if I remember correctly also sensitive. Goodluck with your beauti's.

DUC - lave the warbler and BURN, chickadees

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Mrs. Ed, your 'diner' looks so pretty with all the House Finch! I was just noticing that our HF population made a big jump in the last week or so. The memo must have got out that this is the place to dine!!

Getting ready for another round of snow here so the feeders have been very busy today. I put out some extra nuts for them this morning.

Tufted Titmouse from last week.

My guy was back today and he was not happy when the starlings came. He stayed for quite awhile and I got some good pictures. I hope he comes back again and again. He looks like he was yelling at them to get away. I was so happy when I saw him back and he actually turned and looked at me and still stuck around. He is getting used to me I think.

Here he is again, actually sharing some seeds with the starlings.

When the 3PM light hit the Diner, I was lucky Miss Cardinal stopped by. Check out her "eyebrow".

Oh that's cute Mrs Ed!

Teddy, I love the vivacious personality of the Red-bellied Woodpecker!

South Hamilton, MA

I love her red bill.

teddie, if you can still keep the squirrels away, there will be more seeds for the birds. Do you have the big fox squirrels? DD in Huron does.

Mount Pleasant Mills, PA(Zone 5a)

Love the Titmouse Nanny.

Mrs. Ed great shot of that Cardinal. Love the eyebrow.

Lakeview, OH

If I continue to coat the seeds with hot sauce I will. I was so happy when the red-bellied woodpecker came back as many times as he did. As you saw in the pictures, the hot sauce did not hurt the birds at all, one squirrel was climbing around on the tree, and everytime he got near the feeding platform, he went the other direction! I think maybe they are getting the message that I don't want them there, I don't mind them eating what falls on the ground, I just don't want them eating all the seeds away from the birds.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

That is cool Mrs. Ed!!! I have never noticed one before.....I'll have to look harder!

Melbourne, FL

Long distance shot of a Bald Eagle soaring. I heard this and another Eagle long before I spotted them.

This is the way I have my suet cake hanging, do you think I would get more woodpeckers if it was fastened to the tree? Are they leery of it swinging in the wind?

Thumbnail by teddy_8905
Marlton, NJ

If their already using it that way I wouldn't worry about it. Otherwise I would try fastening it to a tree IF it's hot pepper suet. Squirrel's might eat it if it's any other flavor.
