Erin, try to put out a fruit & nut mix....the jays love it, cardinals, too! Yes, I have lots of crows at times, Tommy....ravens as well. Some pine siskins & redpolls were around this area earlier (though not in my yard) but they have moved on.
Where are the birds?
I will try that. They were here the very beginning of the cold weather but have since disappeared. Thanks.
Erin
Tons of birds out today since it warmed up
Starlings were here...grrrr as soon as it gets a tad warmer they swarm in!!
We have had a family of Crows living across the road from my house for over 40 years and they have never been friendly, give me a cross caw as I do my kennel chorse mornings, always got a kick out of the babies screaming when they got fledged. This fall I saw one in the back yard and fetched a dead squirrel from the road and tossed where he would see it and now pick up road kill when I see it if possibleand put it there for the them and the enjoy and seem receptive.
That's about what they're good for! Saw my red bellied woodpecker today for the first time in a month.
The little birds seem to know when the weather is going to be bad. They filled up this morning before the snow got heavy and turned to rain. We've had male and female cardinals, downy woodpeckers, wrens, titmice, chickadees, juncos, goldfinches, sparrows and earlier this year (but not today) a pair of rose breasted grossbeaks
Out in the deep woods we have some pileated woodpeckers. they are very loud!
They certainly are, & really wreck a tree quickly......my son's BIL, who built a house on the blueberry farm , had one in his garage when it was being constructed....I shooed it out once, but it went right back in! I told George he needed to get doors in place quickly!
I've only seen one here.....glad of it.....
The crows do seem to be very large this winter.
Any snaps of the grackle?? Hee Hee.
No, but I'd like to pop this one....
snap, grackle, pop.....sounds like a breakfast cereal ;)
Yep! Birds are starting to feed now, have to put out more seed....the plowperson has pushed more snow against the feeder!
Duncraft.com is currently having a sale and flat rate shipping.
Hard for me to understand ,nature lovers who discriminate so against varieties of birds. My experience has shown nature doesn't want or need my interference.
Just ordered 2 new feeders and seed from Drs Foster and Smith, having a sale and they were cheaper than others I found. Also free shipping because of the amt I spent
I'll check them out.
My feeder is just a tad lopsided after the bear mangled it, but still usable.....
Great pics Celeste! Love the one flying away.
Thanks Ronnie, me too!
Nice series, Celeste!
I usually throw something out every morning on the deck....when I'm late I hear the blue jay out there screaming at me... sounds like "where? where? where's my food!"
Oooh, not happy with all that snow, are they? Me either.....I have had a few birds today, guess the wind is keeping them close to home.....
I thought this was pretty neat http://wasdpa.org/schools/senior/Envirothon/Wildlife/PABirdSongs.htm it helped us identify an owl that keeps coming to our yard but we can't seem to get a glimpse of.
What kind was it, Ronnie?
Great Horned...we are hoping they will nest here. A few nights they actually kept us up. There must be something here they like that keeps bringing them back...we do have lots of rabbits running around...
There you go! When we rescued Sophie there was an owl sitting in the oak waiting for her to emerge from the woods.
That is strange, Andy.....I have my usual mix this winter, not as many birds total, but all the ones I always get......
I overstated the lack of birds. There are pigeons and a pair of Cardinals and a few sparrows. I hear a Flicker now and then and see a mockingbird while walking the dog. No wintering robins or even starlings.
I only have one starling who shows up....2 pairs of cardinals, no pigeons but several mourning doves, many large jays!
