Thanks for the new thead Hack and congrats on the lifer. Always exciting to get a new one!
This is a great thread and it's nice to see so many posting their feathered friends.
I have been too wimpy to really get out and do any shooting...staying close to home until it warms up a little more. Here is a cute little White-breasted Nuthatch on the back yard walnut tree.

DAILY BIRD PICS VOL. # 373
Hi Rose, Great shots!!! I cannot believe all the Finch you get, the food supply must go very fast. Love Blueboy and glad he is eating sunflower chips.
so cute! Is that one of those feeders shaped like a strawberry? I bet your hummingbirds will check it out.
I tried a new technique to discourage the squirrels, I put some mixed seed on the platform feeder, but I mixed in a lot of black pepper in it too. Unfortunately it is late enough that I will have to wait until tomorrow to see if it works, I love the squirrels, they are just eating way too much of the birdseed, and when the birds finally get to the platform, there is not much seed there, and I certainly don't want to kill the squirrels, just maybe put them on a diet so to speak. My guy was back again, he had his back to me again darn it! But his back is just as pretty as the rest of him.

now you know there is a pepper mix you can use for mammals to get away. Hot pepper dust, just be very careful when handling.
I don't know if fastening to the tree here would be such a good idea, the squirrels keep eyeing ours but we have it on a shepherds hook, so when they decide to jump on it, it is not steady enough for them and they jump off. If I could figure out a way that the squirrels would not eat it away from the woodpeckers, I would do it in a heartbeat, I love to watch the woodpeckers eat. Here is my guy, he came back today, actually I am not sure it is the same one, his red on his head is more than the other one or maybe just my imagination, but anyway he came back. If you have any suggestions on how to get this fellow to come more often I would appreciate all.
ya know, males are complete with the crimson red, the females have a space.
I love the WP way more than anything, they will shake the sguirrels off if they have too!!!!! Get feeders to positions so that peckers can feed from them and tree rats cant!!!!
Thanks lionhrt9, I might try that if my black pepper don't work. It made me sneeze. So hopefully it will work.

just remember that everything is subject to conditions. that hot pepper dust i mixed with feed and threw it on a groud feeder was awesome for squirrels but after a rain it was game on!!!
Got to go on another 1st for the Travman!!! While on the freakin cell phone with the boss I saw something that looked like the bark on our tree was tripping out and moving around.
It was, thank god I grabbed the telephoto and marked down another bird i have never paid attention to in my life. I will from now on!!
lucky you to catch a brown creeper. they are fast!!!
LOL. You know, sometimes at my house they will slow down while eating suet crumbs on the base of the tree. Also, they seem to always show up around 3-4 pm.
Mrs. Ed I think your Eagle is nice!! I will get a photo someday......*sigh*
Rose your BB's are so pretty!
I want to go out one day looking for the Horned Larks but between the cold/snow and feeling guilty about putting Gus in his crate, so I haven't done it yet! Supposed to be bitter cold by the end of the week...bah humbug!
Heck, I need to just go walk down the road and see what I find. Haven't even done that in a long time.
oh man. don't feel guilty about that, you have to have a life too.
I looked for larks today and goldeneye, but only found mallards, canada geese, the eagles (awesome) and a hawk. Oh you know, some guy from here said he saw like 30 eagles at the same place I was. hrrmmmm. I got gipped.
Nice Brown Creeper pic, thanks!
Resin
wow! that means more than you know, thanks!! I almost tipped my coffee over when this happened. meaning that the bird was there,
One thing I want to say is that folks never want to make a call on ID. Trust yourselves, do the bookwork a bit, but make the call. if ist not right they will correct you. its better than not making a call at all.

Is there something you can get that is cheap that you can put peanuts in that the wp's and other peanut-loving birds can get them out that they won't tear up real easy? Any advice will be appreciated.
I think the Peanut Silo's like you see in a lot of these pics are very good. There are several on this site ranging from $9- $20.

Nice ones buttoneer! Yes we usually make new threads when it gets near to 135 replies.
Speaking of that- VA_Wild_Rose will be starting the next thread later.
I made my own peanut silos. Squirrels can still eat from it, so it's good to baffle it.
You can find instructions here:

I may have done it, I had to go out and fill up the mixed seed feeder, and a squirrel came down and I put a piece of bread that had a lot of pepper on it on the platform feeder, he came down and grabbed it and took off, he has not been back since. The birds are eating the stuff I threw on the ground so I guess what I read is true. I put black pepper in the stuff on the ground too. Going to have to get something more hotter, the black pepper don't seem to be doing it like I thought.
I bought a packet of the red pepper sold for just this purpose. I mixed it in with some of the seed. I watched as one squirrel clearly was bothered by it, but later, it went for the seed on the side of the platform that did not have pepper on it. AND, a whole bunch of pepper went through the platform mesh anyway.
This cardinal cracks me up. Besides the fact that her crest is always very pointy, she really wanted one of these peanuts.
The platform we have is a homemade wooden one, so no mesh for it to go through, the black pepper has not worked, the squirrels are still here and still eating everything. I think we had a visit from a hawk, I did not get to see him but I heard him and he sounded close.
