Amaryllis thread part 2

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

This is the picture on eBay from the grower when I bought this one (think it is Mrs Garfield) last March. It was really dormant when I got it but is shooting up a leaf now.

Here is the variegated leaf.

I would LOVE to have a variegated Hippeastrum papilio (here is a pix of a beautiful plant, but not mine.)

This is an OLD picture of a H. papilio I had years ago (& lost, but have another one, now)

Here is a NOID Amaryllis that bloomed for me. Anybody know what this one is? Thanks.

all I can say is-- ooooohhhhh!

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Yeah, I used to have a "take it or leave it" attitude with Ammies but something "clicked" with me a couple years ago when I decided to start them from seed & see what happened. One day, I made the "fatal" mistake of looking them up on eBay. That did it! I don't have a lot, really, but I am happy with what I have. I have a few orchids, but they take a little more care than I have time to give & haven't bloomed for a long while. they need repotted, fertilized and are prone to virus, so I will stick with the ammies. The flower doesn't last long, but that's what cameras are for. And they kinda resemble an orchid. I would like to try some hybridizing but at age 67, dunno about that. I do try cross-pollenating when flowers are blooming and you can freeze the pollen in 35 mm camera containers & use it when others are blooming later, just like orchids. If this doesn't fool up, I will try to include a pix of my seedling babies:

Judy, those are beauties, don't know which one I like best, oh! what the heck I like them all ! Even the NOID has a different shape to the flower.

I think my Lemon Star is pushing up another bud. This will be the first time I have had 2 bloom stalks on the same bulb at the same time and now on 2 of the bulbs. I wonder what they fed them over the summer.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

I dunno but PUH-LEASE take pix & post them. I need to do some ooooh-ing & ahhhhhh-ing, myself.

Ladygardener, I am so glad you put the pix of them right in the pot. When they are not blooming, you can see what to expect. Can hardly wait to see everybody's blooms to brighten up this winter. It's snowing now, 7th storm in 7 weeks. Spring, please don't hide your face.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

No snow here yet----
Forecasters said it may start around 10PM....It is now 7:30PM....

G.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

It started here at 7 pm, put 1/4 inch on the ground, then stopped.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

We got our quarter inch here too, between 2-3 am. Its going to be very cold this weekend!

It seems that once the bud is fully out of the bulb it grows really fast. I have one bulb from last year still in the basement that I will be bringing upstairs and start watering.

We had snow last night and we had to make the trip to Cleveland this morning. Secondary roads were covered but the interstate was not real bad. Some snow here and there on the road. We did see one car that spun out and was on the side of the interstate with it's flashers on.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I brought my 5 pots of Amaryllis up into the LR today.

Since I took the time to re-pot them--fresh soil mix top and bottom--I have been
thinking I should bring them upstairs.....I see little tips of leaves. No bloom tips yet....

Geez! My LR is so full of plants--I have to duck walking around, especially near the window wall.

Just think of all the extra Oxygen i am breathing here.....:o)

Gita

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Gita, and the extra CO2 you are breathing the other 12 hours!!!! LOL

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

I just read that plants also put moisture into the air. That's a good thing.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Sure nuff.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

From my accumulated knowledge--the plants that clean air the most are the
low light plants--like Spath, Spider plants, Aglaonemas, etc....I am sure there are more...

G.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I was reading, its not just the plants greenery but the life in the soil too. I know 'doc' has some really lively soil LOL
My one A bulb has those green edges--I think they just might be shifting a little (hope hope!)

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I brought all five of my re-potted A's up this morning.
I know it won't be long till they will start growing...

OK! Back to the seeds...UGH! have to work tomorrow......

G.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I dug one of my A pots out and it doesn't look good there are some viable roots but the bulbs themselves don't look good lots of paper layers and the hard bulb isn't very big. I did start watering it so we will see if I get anything but I'm not expecting too. Oh BTW my parents had a great time watching theirs grow and it bloomed on their 60th Anniversary.

Posting a updated picture.

have to make a point to keep an eye out for growth on mine
now that I have repotted them and brought them upstairs
where it is warmer..

Lady--they sure grow fast--don't they--once they getgoing?

Gita

Wow Chris, the blooms won't be far away!
My Zombie is definitely doing something- I can see the leaf stubs have changed. I'm still far from bloom though.
MIL has that pot of minis I got her for Xmas- I have to liberate them pretty soon. She is astounded that I will keep the plants and grow them over the summer. I saw some primroses in the store- I bet if I give her one of those she'll hand over the Amaryllis

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I don't think mine are any good but Ric did pot up spring bulbs last fall in 4 inch pots and put them in the garage. They are looking pretty good I think I might put together a mixed pot of them for Mom at Valentines day. Definitely have to get Amaryllises next year We had so much fun with them last year.

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Nothing much on mine yet. I see tips of leaves showing--not buds...
I like to see those fat buds coming first--and the leaves later...
Not much light where they are....:o(

Buttoneer, oh my! I have to have an orange one!! That's just gorgous!!

Lima is beautiful too! I hope the bloom comes true to the picture.

Mrs. Garfield is beautiful too!

I love varigated leaves and Papilio is striking!

Wow on the last! That is a pretty telling leaf pattern. It shouldn't be too hard to track down.

Those are all beautiful, and different than the plain one's I see offered in catalogs. How did growing from seed work out?

Chris, this is so exciting!! Just like waiting for an egg to hatch, LOL! They are going to be beautiful!! They're so strong too!

Novella is going to be a gorgeous delicate pink.

I too like the way you put the tag by the bulb. It's so nice to see the picture and know what to expect.

Gita, you ought to be giddy, or look ten years younger with all that oxygen, LOL!

Sallyg, it's the life in the soil that keeps us healthy, according to new reports. LOL over liberating the MIL's plants :o)

Holly not only do they ship fast, you order fast, LOL! How nice to gift them. That will put a smile on a few faces.

Charisma was one of my ''really wants,'' but, I have cats and there is no way!

I can't wait to see everyone's blooms!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Billy--I DO! Look 10 years younger anyway--maybe even 15......
I will be 74 in one month! NOT mentally--mind you!
And--that is STILL my own hair color!!! I especially appreciate that!
No $$$ to spend with highlighting or coloring....Not sure I will be doing that.

Maybe all those years in garden centers and greenhouses is paying off.....:o)

Novella is also getting ready to open, but I noticed it is starting to send up another bloom stalk. That means all the ones I ordered form AM were all 2 stalk bulbs.
Holly, you will not be disappointed.
