The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

So pretty GP but I think it is time for them to pack their suitcases and head for the Ozarks!!

Won't be long now.

This morning was the first time this season I saw two male Painted Buntings at one time. A lot of activity, so some are probably passing through headed North. I did get one male in this shot of the busy feeders. Very dark and dreary this morning.

Just a small number of Buntings still around. I did see one male Painted, but most left are Indigos.

Very nice!

Cleburne, TX(Zone 8a)

How do you get anything done but watch birds all day. All I can say is wow what color good job.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I always look forward to seeing & hearing the Indigo's every spring!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

So pretty GP...I will let you know when they arrive!! Have you ever seen them eating anything besides millet? If I feed millet it attracts too many House Sparrows so I am trying to find an alternative. I have suflower hearts out so I hope they will like them...if not I will have to stalk the farm for them!!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I have the same problem as you Rose. I ended up taking down the caged feeder last year because of all the HOSP.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

I did the same thing last year Nanny and didn't get to see the Indigo's in the yard as often! I hope I can come up with a plan B...let me know if you do!

Melbourne, FL

They will eat sunflower heart pieces also, but Millet is their favorite food. The caged feeders are the only way to deter bigger birds.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I had a Rose-breasted Grosbeak get in the darn feeder and I was so afraid it wouldn't get out of it!! It made it but it had to work at it.

Melbourne, FL

I've never had anything but Buntings in my two caged feeders I got from Duncraft. I guess the size of the openings has to be really exact.

Melbourne, FL

I'm surprised there are still a few Buntings here. Here is a male Painted.

I'm amazed there are still a few hanging around. I saw two Painted Bunting males at one time yesterday. Here is a female.

Indigo. I ran out of millet seed a week ago and did not want to order more at this late date, so I decided to try some Parakeet seed, which has two kinds of millet, and they don't seem to mind it a bit.

Beautiful, GP. How far north do they go on migration?

Marlton, NJ

We have one in NJ right now.

Glad yours are still around GP!

Melbourne, FL

I read somewhere the ones that leave Florida in the spring most likely head for the Carolina area, etc....but who really knows unless they are banded? In fact, some that I see here may only go as far as North Florida.

PERTH, Australia

Thanks for that, Pelle and GP

Melbourne, FL

Still a few hanging around.
