That is a lovely picture Glenna.

Brandon are the Agave seeds you have growing the ones I sent you?

WINTER BLAST
I've been ready for bed since woke up. I'm very solar powered so no sun is really hard. I sit down to read and wake up an hour later. I'm just glad I'm not the only one. Strange how the weather effects the amount of time I can spend sleeping.
Josephine, they're Agaves lechuguilla and havardiana. I'm still trying with the americanas you gave me. I might switch them over
to a sandier soil to see if I get better luck. By the way, I've heard that they have some pretty nasty sap in their leaves. Do you have
any special precautions you have to take when dealing with your century plants?
Brandon
Not that I know of Brandon, I have mine covered with a blanket and i hope it makes it through this cold, we shall see.
So what does it mean when a plant is "cold hardy to 15 degrees"? How LONG can it handle that temperature? Just curious, as this cold snap has been so extended and I'm wondering if anything will die not because of the minimum temperatures, but due to how long it has been below freezing.
I am wondering that too. Does it mean a little exposure or a long one? Something many of us will be finding out soon enough.
C
I got so focused on taking care of the plants I forgot about the wells and exposed water lines. Got all the pipes working and covered but the new well is froze. Got it covered with a light. The well to the house got used enough to stay thawed and I covered it too. Suppose to be colder tonite.fine
Last year some people here lost mature trees among other plants and they were saying this was due to the duration of the cold. It has a longer time to sink into the plant, but this is just my two cents.
Dane
I am sure you are right about the duration. This weather has made me appreciate my plants. I have a tree yucca my husband dug up on some property his family owns out near El Paso. Never before have I even considered whether it would live or die during the winter but this year I am worried. I have a lot of potted plants outside.
C
How much snow do you think we might get?
Normally my potted plants under the tarps have done well, but this time they have been cold a long time so we shall see what happens.
Forecasters keep upping the accumulations and when it will start. Isn't it usually the other way around? :-)
I know, it's crazy!
Brandon
LOL well I am glad they are sure.

we just had a 40 minute power outage. All electric house. Every thing is covered in ice now. Looking pretty cold.
It's been sleeting on and off in north Austin. I wish it would snow. I think it feels warmer when it does...
Snow here, a nice covering. Pond has stopped, guess I should have unplugged it.
C
Well it started about 11:15 here as best we can judge by when we had looked out last. Now at midnight we already have about one inch of new snow! If this goes on all night as they are predicting it will be quite an accumulation by mid-morning.
I thank the good Lord for letting me retire when I did and not having to wonder how or when I can go to work on days like this. Young people get a job with benefits while you can, it is so worth it.
Hi Cheryl, guess we cross posted. If you haven't unplugged you need to so it doesn't burn up your pump. We have an extra pump going in the big pond so it won't freeze entirely. But the waterfall is beginning to get less and less.
I am giving up, going to bed til real spring arrives!
LOL! I need to get off of here and do the same....good night.
It's past midnight and there's so much snow outside it's barely even dark. Well, might as well enjoy it while it's enjoyable.
Brandon
Look what time it is, and I'm still awake.

Time to Hibernate.

About an inch of snow in New Braunfels this morning. Lots of road closures in to SA.
Woke to somewhere between 4" & 6" of snow in my yard. The lights are out behind us, which is very odd, so I think they don't have power. :( I have to get ready to head to work! Don't think I'll get the call telling me not to come in today.
White here but it is not snow. It started sleeting last nite at 11 pm and is still raining ice.
Amazing we still have lights.
Bird feeders are full of seed and birdies, I just added warm water to the birdbath to thaw it and it is now full of birds.
I put another log on the GH fire and am going to crank to Jeep so we can go to work.
Life is good ~ enjoy the day!
About two inches of snow here, it looks pretty, but another day of being cooped in looms ahead.
I am soooooo tired of it!!!
Josephine, it's supposed to be sunny and above freezing tomorrow! There's hope on the horizon!
I hope so, I am supposed to go with someone to select native plants for a new natural area that has opened up in Arlington, it is called OS Gray Natural Area and it used to be a pecan tree nursery.
I am helping them to get native plants established there, already planted some wildflower seeds.
We shall see how it goes.
Josephine.
Here just north of Big Sandy we have about two inches of the white stuff. There was just a little sleet before the snow so roads are very slick. We are staying in and cooking on the wood burning stove. We have electricity but am worried about the hoophouse. I have not opened the door since this blast has hit, so don't know if heaters are keeping up or not, doesn't much matter, there is nothing more I can do. Our only source of heat in the house is a wood burning stove and we have plenty of wood. We also have a huge oak tree that died right out side the front door but my tallest ladder will not reach the bottom limbs. I need ropes and a saddle before I tackle this one. It is starting to snow again and the coffee taste pretty good this morning. Stay warm everyone.
Yes, you stay safe too Ken.
Snow here, about 1 inch. It is quickly melting tho.
Ken I hope the wood burner can keep you warm with this mess. I bet you go through most of that wood pile. Events like this remind me of how small people are compared to the workings of the Earth. Nothing more to do is right. I really hope Sat and Sun. are as warm as predicted.
C
Me too Cheryl.
It is up to 27 degrees over here... down right balmy after the past few days! With the sun out, my driveway is actually thawing.
40 here in the sun, and things are starting to melt, isn't sunshine beautiful?
Yes! Same here. I had to go to work. I was out at 11 and the roads were terrible. Now it is mainly slush on the well travels ruts.
