January 2011 Blooms

I also recommend Golden Eye semiminiature. These resisted the mildew wonderfully. They seemed to like the cooler weather also.

Chirita nimbus has been blooming all winter. If I could only have 1 chirita, it would be this!!!

I tried crossing little chirita tamiana with nimbus last fall, but didn't seem to produce seed pods. I wasn't sure what to really look for, but it wasn't obviously there to me.

Last one is Yukako in a 3 inch. Also have a 4inch but no blooms yet. Was easy to transplant the sucker and get this pretty quickly.

Boy, I just noticed that Michelangelo doesn't look like it should. It ought to be white and purple. Dern, I started this one from a leaf off my blue ribbon plant that I sold at last year's sale. Do u just pitch them when they don't bloom true?

No.It could be a sport or the next bloom could be different.

They are all way beyond gorgeous !! Love the Yukako!!

Thanks. I really don't let them bloom too much until show time. I finally get to enjoy! This is my 2nd year with AV's and maybe I'll keep some blooming year round now. I'm understanding the appeal to grow for enjoyment rather than just show.

Maria -- You Reed Stem is really beautiful and looks very, very happy!  I think a lot of people think orchids are tough, and they definitely can be if you get something that isn't suited to the conditions you can give them.  But if you choose the right types, wow ... they can be just exquisite and so much fun.  Personally, I always feel like a bloomin' (plant) genius when I can get one to do something (other than just sit there ... ). But I'm not one bit surprised to see that yours are thriving.

Jamie-- Yukako is cool.   Have you grown many chimeras? It looks great!  I've never tried one, but hubby got me a couple for Christmas, so I may have to tap into your expertise at some point.   Of course living way up here  it'll be at least a month before they can send it to me.  But I'm really looking forward to that first warm spell!
