make your own plant ring type things. wrap folded paper towel in 6" x 2" with saran wrap you need three per pot.
January 2011 Blooms
Helene, what makes it hug the pot? I don't have a clear visual.....
Thanks!
you just put them underneath the leaves - using three - you overlap these pads...I don't have any at the moment will post pic soon or another one is using meat trays....
A lady at our local African Violet Club used to make plant rings our of Paper Plates. She cut slits all around the inside border and folded the slit part under somehow ... I don't really remember the details, but with paper plates coming in small, medium and larger sizes she used them for all the different size AV's she grew.
I just googled and found this. It says not to use paper plates because of water getting on them - I didn't read too far but I guess they could get soggy, so the styrofoam plates would work even better!

The plates are a great idea -- I've been trying to think of something to use as an inexpensive alternative to the plant rings. Who the heck has $5-10 (each) to spend on dozens of plants ?? Thx!

I used to do this.
The grocery store meat trays cut in half make many air holesholes.I used sautering iron. Cut out the center of each half so it did not touch the plant but stayd on the pot
then just slide under the plant. (had forgotten about this)
Great pics as always Ladies. Thanks for sharing!!! Shanika, did you get the Frosty Cherry from Rob's? Awesome bloom!
Connie
Hi Connie!
I grew this plant from a leaf started this past April/May from Lyndon Lyons. This variety grows very fast.
DANG!!!! That DID grow fast!! Great job as always, Shanika :)
Connie

Wonderful columnea, most likely Light Prince:

Something different blooms for me too:
Great pictures Tommie and Maria!!
That looks right! Thanks!! Beautiful Paph too!
Tommie: That is a beautiful Columnea: http://www.gesneriads.ca/colum138.htm
I didn't realize there was a variegated version until a couple of years ago when someone on here posted pictures of theirs. I had a couple of different Columnea's a few years ago but like all of my other Gessies they kinda faded away, LOL. I keep saying I'm going to set up stands and grow a few AV's and others again but still haven't found the space in the house. I do still have a couple of Chirita's hanging on. They must be touch plants if they can survive being out on my back porch during last winter's freezes and this winter's low temp's! I don't remember to water them very often either ... they really should be dead by now with the lack of care they've gotten from me!
carpathiangirl: Gorgeous Phalanenopsis amabilis! You should add your lovely photo to Plant Files: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/104545/
Great growing everyone! I just went through a chaotic move--lost a lot of plants, and the natural light here is not great. Will take some time for the survivors to recover and to set up a growing area. So, in the meantime, I will live vicariously through you guys. Post away!
Jan!! I wondered where you went to.
Jan: What a beautiful orchid!
Tommie: I really like that Columnea schiedeana .. that bloom is so different and really pretty!
Lin, your orchid pics are great too! Thanks for the link, it was very helpful to ID my plant, how did you know?
Love the columnea, very unusual!
Jan, I'm sure you have tons of pics to drool over, don't you?

phoebesviolets . . . Jan . . . don't forget to update your mailing information in the exchange. Or, if it's not there, please let me know what the new information is, so when your bingo prize is ready, I'll know where to send it!
Maria-- Nice phalaenopsis! I didn't know you were growing those too. Next time we do a trade, remind me (if you're interested) -- I've got an extra phal you might enjoy. The parent is a monster --- picked it up at Meijer a couple years ago, and it hasn't stopped blooming since then. Last fall one of the spikes produced a keiki that spiked & bloomed before I even got around to taking it off the parent. Crazy little plant. Here's a shot of the mama plant:

Tommie- I really love your C. 'Light Prince' --- just a beauty, haven't ever seen a variegated one like that.
Hey Jan, how you've been? Hope you collection keeps flourishing and we'll enjoy the new pics soon.
Love your orchid, nice stripes! I'm very new to orchids, always thought they were difficult to grow. Now after those first huge blooms I'd love to try more and will definitely look for the new ones. That's why your offer sounds great, now I'll have to start trading early lol.
Such beauties ladies!!
Jamie,
Where do you buy bulb pans? They can be tough to find around here.
Lynn
You can buy them at violetbarn.com or ebay. I also found some at my local nursery(big ones). I put damp paper towel over the bottom holes so soil doesn't run out.
This is Fantasy Gold in a 2 inch. pot
