Can North Central Tx chime in here too? Fort Worth. If you like concrete and shopping centers, we are pretty much it. We still have some pretty places, but they are going fast. We have pecans and red oaks and as some of you know, pecans tend to prune themselves in high winds, so we use the wood alot for steaks. But good steaks are getting hard to find, just don't put them out in the market like they used to.

I bought the book for Lasagna beds from Rodale's right before I learned I had cancer, and it is sitting here waiting for me to get the nerve to tackle it. You could turn a parking lot into a lush garden in a day if you had the labor and materials. Just the thing for our poor soil. It's a 240+ page book, but I will be happy to share any part of it I can with anyone here.
Hey this is GREAT! Here is the master plan...I leave here..on I-10...detour up to D-FW on I-20...stop at Nefer's and load up on pecans...a side trip up to Denton to visit Sis in law, back down to Ausitn area and eat wingnut out of house and home on the steaks, then I'm sure someone in La, will take pity on this under nourshed travler. Then to Sugar's for Lasagna! Then to FL for the winter. Sound like a plan to me...GET READY Homosassa, here I come. Jo
Wingnut I'm with you on the real steak taste. Sounds like we could have a steak tasting contest here. Yours from Spicewood Texas, Newbraska_Jewel and her corn fed and now nefer from Fort Worth Texas. What do you say Roadrunner/CC, sis and Aimee do you think we would be good judges??????
By the way Wingnut thanks for the pictures I stayed there for quit a while. Hope you do make it up this way sometime you'd really like it I think. Now I know certain parts of Texas stay warm all year do you? I should look you up in an atlas but it's packed away for our move, so I'll let you tell me,Wingnut, nefer,Aimee? Sis are you in Texas also?
Oh, goody, I like this! Uhh, does it matter that I can't eat steak? It tastes good, just doesn't agree with me. Maybe I'll cheat, ignore my grouchy tummy and just indulge. Wingnut, do you have enough mesquite? (I guess you have to live in Texas to appreciate the absurdity of that question). Anyway, I'll probably sneak in some fish, as Krause Springs is supposed to have some of the best. This displaced cajun does miss the scaly foods of cold springs. But I don't need any of that sauce on either one of them, just keep it simple.
Flowerpot, I just realized no one ever told you where to find a picture of the famous Texas Bluebonnet. You can go to the website for Wildseed Farms, www.wildseedfarms.com, and see one that is pretty accurate, as well as get info for growing. The ones on seed packets are usually rather enhanced. You can link from there to Texas A&M, where there is an alphabetized list of Texas wildflowers. Wildseed is at Fredericksburg, a little further west than Wingnut's place, but a nice place to add to your trip. Open free, 7AM to 7PM Mon-Fri, 9AM-3PM Sat, and cameras are welcome. They will send you a catalog, too.
Yes Aimee, Wingnut gave me a link to see the Texas Bluebonnet, but I'll check your site out also Thank you.
Sugar_fl will you ever forgive me I neglected to invite you along as a steak tasting judge as well? Would you like to be a judge with us.
Aimee you don't have to eat steak the rest of us can do that for you.
Sis I'm guessing you live fairly close to me, now that I see you're in zone 5 and I'm 5b.
Oh for crying out loud Sis "(follow the yellow brick road)" I'm still in a daze, drinking my first cup of coffee. Or, the Wicked Witch of the West, had my brain this morning. ha ha ha. So let me know next spring how your blue bonnet turned out because I might like to try some.
Aimee I went to the site you gave me thank you, it's going to take a whole month or more just to visit all the site's of Texas, when we get there.
I'd LOVE to go to Canada, Flowerpot! I've drooled over pictures of vast green wilderness and snow scenes of Canada for many a year! I've never seen snow deeper than 1/2 an inch. If you try to make a snow angel in THAT, you just move the snow out of the way exposing the cow-poop-brown leaves, ending up with a mud angel.
It stays pretty warm here year-round, relatively speaking that is. The coldest is in the teens about twice a year and only for a night or two. It's usually half a week of around 30 at night, 45 in the daytime, then two or three weeks of 20 degrees warmer, with highs in the 80's sprinkled in. Last three Thanksgivings we ate outside and I've been known to go swimming in Lake Buchanan Christmas Eve. It was on a dare, but I did it! LOL!
You're welcome for the pics of Krause's. It's just across my back fence, about 1/2 a mile from where I now sit. When I was a kid, I would ride my horse over there to go swimming and try to get a glimpse of the Krause's son Terry, whom I had a crush on at the time. LOL!
Roadrunner, sounds like a plan! Since Aimee's just a hop-skip-n-jump away, she can drive in and maybe we could get Flowerpot to swing by and pick up Sis and Nebraska. Then after visiting Sis-in-law, you meet us all out here with Nefer in tow and we'll have a cookout! Of course, the prize for best steak is getting to go to Florida with you! ;-) Sugar, you're gonna' have a housefull soon ~ got room?
Aimee, ROTFLOL! Maybe you should bring some mesquite. ;-) We'll use it to boil up some mudbugs for you! I'll even get my expert-crawdad-catchers (nephews) over here to get 'em for us.
I got a better idea! Let's all get ruby slippers, click them together and meet at Sis's place. It'll be lots cheaper on travel expenses. Sis, you ready? Great! Now, if I can just get DH to hang on to me real tight, he might make the trip, too. There's NO WAY I could get that man to wear slippers, ruby or not.
Nefer, where'd ya' go? Off lookin' for some thick steaks?
PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! Let me bring the MESQUITE...we have TONS of it. If you do I'll bring some green chilies and a jack rabbit too.(can you eat those suckers?...must not or they wouldn't be so many of them around.) OK Grand Prize is to go to Fla with me. My Brother's place in on the St. Martins River, 20 minutes by boat to the Gulf of Mexico...good fishing. (She has a 2 Bd. Rm apt downstairs she keeps just for "family". AND I have a KEY!!! SHHH! Jo
Well Wingnut it is very beautiful here and we do still have a lot of area not developed, but we also have big congested cities like you. Where I live is the same climate as your brother inlaw. This past winter is the first winter in a long time that we've had a lot of snow. It's funny because northern Ontario didn't get as much snow as us Southerner's.Ontario is a big province like the state of Texas, I just asked DH size wise how we compare, and we are three times bigger, then the state of Texas, it's 1700 miles from the southern part to the northern tip we have a population of 12 million people. Do you ever notice how, none of that you think about, until you explain the size to someone who's never been here or there in your case? I'm trying to remember you said your brother inlaw lives in Michigan that's a big state also maybe he's in northern Michigan and his winters would be colder.
Last fall we took our boat down through the Erie Barge Canal and then the Inter Coastal Waterway to Fort Myer's Beach. We came home for Christmas via air, then returned to Florida in January and you know I really missed the snow, and am glad we went home for the month of December.
Well I had a little run off of the mouth here. If you ever get this way give me a shout.(all of you)
Now is everybody ready to get together and start this steak tasteing contest Sis and Newbraska are you ready?
HAH! Flowerpot, do you really think that wingnut is going to let you come now that you've done calimed to be "Suthern", not to mention that ya'll are BIGGER than Texas?? In your dreams! LOL RR/CC Jo
I am here. Our big bad thunderstorm with high winds and hail turned out to be a couple of showers. Some north not so lucky. That's one thing we have that nobody wants-tornados and hail.
Love Canada, very beautiful and very nice people. Haven't been there in the winter, though.
Road Runner, don't try to eat those jack rabbits! Even mesquite smoked, they would be tougher than an old saddle.
Here, in NC. Tx, we get a little colder than Wingnut, but not too bad. Not much snow. We haven't had a 'real winter' for several years now. Guess we are about due. You know, been to Nebraska many times, DH is originally from there, but don't think I ever ate steak there. Bout time I tried one, but lets not go in the winter!
HOOOOOOWWWWWellllling never thought of that RR/CC up here we don't do the north and the south thing. Hey Wingnut are yah peved at me??????? Everything's still big in Texas!!!!!
Thank you nefer it's very pretty in the winter also just cold, unless you go to the west coast to Vancouver they have very mild weather but it rains a lot. My sister lived out there for a year and she and her husband loved it. They came back to Ontario for family.
Nah, I'm not hung up on that whole size thing. I think that was started by some ... um ... how to say this delicately ... inadequate men from here. ;-)
I just got back inside from battening down the hatches for the big storm we're supposed to have. Nefer, I guess I did all that for nothing, huh?! LOL!
Nighty-night!
Oh I'm so glad Wingnut, silly things that carry on from the past, and half the time, nobody knows the real reason anymore.
Well, turns out I didn't do all that for nothing! It's been raining to beat the band all night! I woke up this morning to the creek up a couple feet. I like when that happens ~ it cleans it out.
Flowerpot, I'm a fourth generation Texan (can you say "Inbred Redneck"?! LOL!), but was raised by a man with a master's degree in education who taught me to think, so I don't give all that [deleted] much thought! LOL! Also Mama was from out of town, so I'm okay. Some of my cousins on the other hand ... well, they blanch at the thought that Sis married a "Yankee." ;-) That's another goofy one, a carryover from the Civil War, I guess. My Bro-in-law is a jewel! They live down here now, but did live in Michigan for a while. I don't remember the city, but when he did the "hand thing" to show where he was from, he'd point to the space below where his index finger met his hand, close to the edge ~ they lived not far from the great lake that's near there. (I'm not up on my geography this morning! LOL!)
Speaking of geography ~ I didn't know about the Intracoastal Waterway! You can go all the way from Maryland to Texas in a boat inland?! How cool!
Roadrunner, you CAN eat them jacks, but you gotta' use a crockpot. ;-) (Ooops! "Pardon me, miss, but your red neck is showing.")
I was born and raised in WV....so I'm more like a "hillbilly". You are so right...this war has gone on long enough! (WV was a "free" state). As a bride we moved to Richmond, Va...Capital of the Confederacy, and lived next door to a 90 year old woman. She broke her hip and when she was coming to in the hospital, she asked her daughter if it had been a yankee doctor that had operated on her. When DD told her that she didn't think so, the lady replied "I don't think so either, or he would have already killed me". And she was SERIOUS! This was in about 1960, so I guess she could remember some of the aftermath of the war. Jo
Wingnut and Roadrunner we took all that in history when I was in school. I thought back then, who the sam hell cares about all that boring stuff. Well let me tell you, I wish I had of paid better attention. But who'd know, I was going to end up with friends, like you that would tell me about it in a more interesting way. Thank you
