Show your Home State

Crossville, TN

It is really nice when I read a post and can look over and see where the person lives...lets me understand what will grow in their area better. Why do some have their home listed, and some not? Just curious. Jo

Jo,

Members have the option of putting that information in, and they are encouraged to do so when they signup.

Yet, I think that some members aren't really comfortable giving any kind of personal information out at all online, and that sometimes can even include their town or USDA zone.

I wish everyone did enter that information in, but I also certainly respect the wishes of those who wish to remain somewhat anonymous.

Thanks Dave, They are probably like me...when I first get on a site I am reticient about giving info to strangers...like my Mama told me..."don't speak to strangers". But now I know we are among friends here and have no qualms of showing where I live. Can they go back and change it now that they "know" everyone? Jo

Cordova, MD

Then there are people like silly me- who holds hardly anything back.... cuase I know they can find me anyway if they really, really want to!! And, I have nothing to hide!! LOL!!!

Crossville, TN

JSS, also like my Mother, I've never met a stranger, just someone I haven't spoken to yet! I met a lady at the VA (DH in for Dr's appt.)the other day...got to talking to her and exchanged email addresses. My new E-Pal! I told my DH, "She spoke to me first". He couldn't believe THAT! Jo

Cordova, MD

That's great Roadrunner! I, too, like to talk to people I don;t and get to know them!!! The most interesting things have happened that way!! It's a long story, but I met someone that way when I worked at my church, got to know him- he was truly an odd fellow and no one else would talk to him-and I helped him out a little when he was sick- and he ended up leaving me an inheritance when he died!! Wow! I still can;t comprehend it and it was over a year ago!

That is just a beautiful story! And you got part of your reward here on earth! I went over to an elderly neighbors today (lives alone, no family). She had her meds so messed up. Took and extra weekly pill dispenser, set her up for the week...told her I would be over every Sunday to do her meds, and fuss if I looked in them and they hadn't been taken! She had put one medication in a different bottle! Jo

Baker City, OR(Zone 5b)

A map would be fun showing maybe just by percentage where the members live. Not just the US but the whole world. I know many of us didn't indicate where we are from but I think it would still be reasonably accurate as the shy ones come from all over relative to the general population.

Bay City, MI(Zone 6a)

Mary thats what ive been saying...a map with lil flag or something-dots-to mark where in the state-maybe a population number on the dot-i know 4 members from BAY CITY-MICH! Dave can you do it?
green flags for members!;] my avorite color to!
thanks

I'm with you JSS.... Congratulation on your new business BTW hope you do great!!! no actually i KNOW you will do great!! anyway back to this thread. I am sure if anyone wanted to find anything out about me bad enough they would find a way rather my life story was on-line or only in my head. So there is it out there for all the world to see.

A map would be nice...Oh Dave, are you busy? Maybe we could form a "Charter Member" club, then when this sites grows (which it will) we can put initials behind our name...like Roadrunner, CMDG....or Roadrunner, DGCM....I always wanted letters behind my name...like RN...MD.....got the MRS in front, but nothing to look back at! LOL Jo

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Roadrunner, you're too funny!

I like to see where everyone's from, too. I'm not afraid of letting where I'm from be known. If they're gonna' get me, they're gonna' get me, but it'll be AFTER they go through my three big dogs, DH with his gun and ME fighting. We live in the country on a ranch where those things and skills are needed in everyday life and I guess they can come in handy at other times ;-) though we've never had to try 'em. Heck, there's more chance of having something bad happen to you just by going into a big city after dark than by posting your state and zone info here. I don't let fear cripple me and keep me from having fun!!

Crossville, TN

Wingnut, I keep an old road atlas (and a BIG maginifying glass) in the computer/sewing room. I like to see where all of you are from. Texas is so big that they didn't have room to put Spicewood in the index! Give me a hint as to where it is. Dave never did answer me if you could go back and edit your info and add your home to it...now that we've "came out of the closet" here. I had the moniker for a good reason...WAY before I moved out here and see LOTS of real roadrunners ech day. DH and I used to travel the by ways a lot.

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

Roadrunner,
About 6 years ago I was in a very nice chat room..when it started growing the charter members started getting a bighead & thought they should be special.. it even got to the point where they formed their own little chatroom somewhere else & forbid the others to come in..it finally ended up the whole chatroom just went down. I know the charter members here wouldn't act like that.. just letting U know what I experienced once.

I'm not surprised that you can't find it, Roadrunner! LOL! Spicewood's about 50 miles west of Austin on Hwy 71. It's about 8 miles east of the Hwy 281 and Hwy 71 intersection. Some nearby towns that might be on your map are Marble Falls (to the northwest), Johnson City (to the southwest) and Llano (about 45 miles to the west). Did you find it?

(BTW, I think you can go back and edit your profile to show whatever you want by clicking on "Preferences" to the right.)

St. Thomas, ON(Zone 5b)

You are right Wingnut, about editing your profile, because I did. I was so nervous, when I first did my profile I didn't see the part to say where your from. It's neat to see someone's from the UK, Finland, "Canada", Australia, USA. It's amazing to me how I can sit here and communicate with people so far away and yet so close.

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Isn't that awesome, Flowerpot?! Here we are, you and I, how many miles away? More than a thousand, I'm sure. Yet we can talk to each other in seconds. Must be how everyone felt when the telephone first came out. :-)

St. Thomas, ON(Zone 5b)

We had a couple of girls stay with us three years ago they were with Up With People, have you ever heard of it. Anyway the one girl was from Sweden and the other from Corpus Christi Texas are you anywhere near there?

Easton, MD(Zone 5a)

I was just reading about JSS story about the "odd" man she got to know...and I tell you, JSS isn't telling you the whole story. She has a heart bigger than you can ever imagine. The man that she is talking about was unkempt and quite a loner, he had been conveniently forgotten by his family. He was known all over town for his racial intolerance and his "politically incorrect lawn displays". This is putting it mildly, trust me. This old man happened by the church where JSS was working and they started talking. Somehow JSS knew that he was very sick and would go to his house to check on him. It turned out that she was the only person he would trust to come into his home and take care of him, or what was left of his "estate". Most importantly, JSS asked him one day if he thought he was going to heaven...he replied that he had been really bad, and that surely he would never go to heaven, that it was too late to undo all the bad things he had done. JSS explained that it's never too late to ask God to forgive you and to ask Jesus to be your Savior. The old man accepted Jesus shortly before he passed away. She truly knows how to show the love of Jesus, even to the "least of these". She is a special person.

Oh, Jss! I know you didn't do it to feel good about yourself, but I'll bet it does feel good to know where your friend is now!

Flowerpot, I've heard of Up With People, but haven't caught any of their shows. I'm about halfway between Corpus Christi and Dallas. Corpus is on the coast and I'm about 50 miles west of Austin which is pretty much in the middle of the state. I have been to Corpus and can tell you that it's a beautiful place! I want to go back next spring to see the battleship they have moored there and the aquarium.

St. Thomas, ON(Zone 5b)

That's what a real life Angel is all about, and with so many things in this world, that are bad, we need more of you JSS

St. Thomas, ON(Zone 5b)

Wingnut I've heard that it's very beautiful and hot. Now that my DH and I are retired there's so many places we'd like to see that we haven't yet. I've got to try a Texas Steak.
Why dose it always say edit this post when I post and not on others?

OK...ya'll just forget about the DGCM club...got me new initals to put behind my name: CC...as in Coyote Catcher. I went out this morning and there were bird feathers all in front of my house and steps. Wiley E. Coyote Ate Here! Wingnut, I know now why I missed your home town. I have traveled I-40, I-20, and I-10, but never have been to Austin area. I hear it is even more beautiful than San Antonio. I love the Texas Blue Bonnetts Lady Bird planted for ya'll. JSS, I'm glad I got to know you! FP, I would like to see the "Up With People" show too. A girl in DD office traveled with it one year. She said it was a great experience. Jo

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

DH thinks there are two food groups ~ meat and potatoes ~ so I've had to learn how to cook a good one! Thick ones are better than thin ones. I'd take a 1" thick sirloin over a 1/2" thick t-bone any day. We fire up the BBQ pit with pecan wood and cook them that way with just salt and pepper. Mmm-mmm! If you go to Corpus Christi, don't eat steaks, eat seafood! It's GREAT down there! Besides, you can stop at my place for a steak along the way! We've got plenty of room to park an RV and will buy a couple extra steaks to throw on the pit. Just give me a holler if you ever decide to come on down!

PS: It says "edit your post" by your posts so you can edit yours, as you know already, but there's no clickable "edit your post" by other people's posts because you can't edit theirs.

Roadrunner, I just have to add this bit of history. Whereas Lady Bird got the publicity and did indeed popularize the idea, our wildflowers were saved by a man named Carroll Abbott. He was out gathering seeds and badgering people into planting them years before the days of LBJ at the White House. I understand he later worked with Lady Bird, and she had the clout to make it as successful as it was, but Carroll had already begun the work. He and his wife had a little cottage industry with the seed sales, and he wrote a sort of gardener's newsletter and published it way back. They would actually stuff whole flowerheads into envelopes and mail them to fill orders. All seeds were cleaned and packed at their kitchen table by hand. I remember him talking about the wildflower center years before it became a reality or had any source of funding. He had cancer, thought he would die, came back to carry on his work, but eventually lost the battle to cancer. I greatly admire what Lady Bird did, but I always think of Carroll as the true instigator.

Crossville, TN

Aimee, That is wonderful! I hope he got remembered for it. So many of the states now have nice wild flowers growing. One place in Va. has a lot of Chickory. I love it too. I think my favorite here is the orange/red Bird of Paridise. DH planted me 3 of them. Can't wait to see them in bloom next year. If anyone needs Mesquite, I'm your girl!
I would call it a Mesquite BUSH...my DD said they were TREES...I still think any thing that is not much taller than me is a BUSH! Jo

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

Roadrunner.. I just got some chicory seeds.. hope they do good here in FL..

Crossville, TN

Oh Sugar, I hope they do. I know where you live...but which side of the time zone is that on? I lived in Homosassa and went to a Native Plant seminar at the Wild Life Park there. The lady that did it started her talk by saying "Welcome to Florida. If you love your Lilacs...go home!" I just posted a picture you might be interested in (Photos/for floridian and all) It was in the newspaper in Cirtus County. Dolphins feeding. Check it out. Jo

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

If I may brag for a moment, yes, Spicewood is MUCH prettier than San Antone! I live on a ranch with two spring-fed creeks that feed Krause's Springs. I have quite a few cypress trees on my place and hundreds of pecans. I'm so lucky!
Here are some pics of Krause's. My place isn't quite that beautiful, but I think it's close!

This is our 1st year of gardening. My 1st year here. We have only been married a little over a year. We are both seniors & met on the net..We had a few disasters in the garden but wait till next year *G* Our soil is very poor so we are making lasagna beds.. amending some area a lot & gonna plant a lot in containers.
We have what I think is some great seeds given us by members here..Have a nice lite setup ready.. can hardly wait for spring... ;o)

Roadrunner/CC is there a picture somewhere of the Texas Blue Bonnet? We had the girls, from Up With People for four days. I took them down to the beach and they thought Lake Erie was the ocean. They said at home a lake you can see across. I guess I didn't realize how big the Great lakes were until then. We did lots of site seeing of our city and surrounding area. Dh and I saw their show it was really up lifting, what a great experiance for them. Oh yah they have to pay to go with the troop, so some of them had to go home and work to make more money to carry on. Their last stop was Japan. I'm glad to have met you to Jo.
Wingnut that sounds like a great idea, especially after I saw those photo's you put up, wow. My DH has a passion for good Steak as well and to cook it right over an open fire pit, ohhhhh my mouth is drulling, dose the pecan wood give it a differant flavour? I Love this learning about places you'd like to see, right from people that actually live there. Aimee I enjoyed the history of the wild flowers, all of you have such pride in your home town's as well as your whole country.
Wingnut now I understand about the editing LOL I kept thinking why dosen't anybody else have that under their post. A little slow but I eventually get it. ha ha ha.
Sugar_fl have fun with your new gardening experiance, we have friends that moved to Fort Myer's area from Maryland and she has no idea what to plant. I told her she should come to this site, I think she will once they get the house they want right now they're renting a condo.

southeast, NE

Flowerpot (& anyone else out there) - I invite you all to stop in and have a corn fed Nebraska steak - the kind you can cut with a fork and it will melt in your mouth! The best is the home raised kind that has been aged at least 2 weeks.

Oh,neighbor, now when DH says let's go out to eat,I'll grab my kit an take out the door, lol' Just up the road a bit, lol'

Crossville, TN

Nebraska, Hush yore mouth! You've made my mouth water big time. I see you still are hidding you home town and state, but guess with your name you are from Nebraska. FP, Thank you for addressing me with my full title. "Roadrunner, CC" Wngnut, Yes, Spicewood wins hands down! You mean this is a private estate? Sugar, those Lasagna beds sound intersting. I din't know you could grow Lasagna! LOL I've never been to Nebraska, but got my map out for those steaks. Went to "Four Corners" (where AZ, Col., NM, and Utah touch corners). Well, this is just so great to see others home state. As soon as I learn "hyperlink" I'll show you my area. Jo

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

Flowerpot,
I'm sure we have some seeds that is out of zone but fun to try..We are planting mostly annuals this year. I do have some perennials we planted this fall after we amended the soil.. hope they bloom next year.
I hope she will come in.. she is in zone 9.. we are zone 8..
we sure have learned a lot here..
Sugar_fl

montgomery, AL(Zone 7b)

Roadrunner,
I fix pretty good lasagna but would hate to serve U any of my lasagna beds..LOL
Do U know how to do lasagna beds? This is our 1st try but sure hear good things about them. Really anxious to see for myself next spring..
Sugar_fl

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Roadrunner CC :-), yes, Krause's is a privately owned estate but they let people come in to camp and swim for a fee. They have showers, bathrooms, stone picnic tables and RV hookups. It's just upstream from an inlet of Lake Travis. Just gorgeous!

Flowerpot, actually the pecan wood doesn't impart much flavor other than a little bit of smoke flavor and that's the beauty of it ~ it lets the flavor of the steak shine through. Mesquite imparts a strong tangy taste and is yummy on brisket or pork steaks. But with a good beef steak, you really want to taste STEAK and not BBQ (atleast that's the way we feel about it :-).
I like learning about places from the inhabitants, too! The few times we get to travel, I like to drive down the un-beaten paths and eat at the little roadside cafes. If you ask them what's interesting about their piece of the world, they'll certainly tell you! Have met a lot of interesting people that way.
My Bro-in-law is from Michigan and he's told me about the Great Lakes. It's hard to fathom a lake that big after growing up with itty-bitty ones! LOL! One day I'll have to make it up there to see for myself!
Here's a bunch of bluebonnet pics: http://images.google.com/images?q=bluebonnet&btnG=Google+Search

Where's my manners? Didn't mean to interupt you guys'

Spicewood, TX(Zone 8b)

Manners, Sis?! We're talkin' about STEAK here, honey! Manners go out the door when talking about such serious matters! LOL! Besides, Nebraska Jewel DID say "...and anyone else out there." I have to agree. :-) Anytime anyone gets down my way, come on over. Just let me know ahead of time so I can buy extra steaks and clean up the mess that our horse makes out of anything he finds loose outside. ;-)

ROFLOL,ya sound like my DH,STEAK'''''Yer right, lol,we'll letcha know ahead a time' Nuthin' on my steak either but my choppers, lol' TIA,Sis'
