Daily Bird Pics - Vol. 361

Lakeview, OH

Went out and tried to find my hawks this afternoon, but alas could not find a feather. There are no birds eating so I thought that was why. It's not very cold outside that might be another reason.

When the time comes, Ducbucin will be starting the next thread. ^_^

Boy, these threads sure go fast, it seems like yesterday that we were starting this one. I would not mind starting one, but I don't know how to do it. It is getting very dark here, I think the rain is going to start sooner than expected. Everyone be careful it is going to get bad.

Tigerlily, cute photos of your heron.

Nanny, thanks for the info on your platform. You may be right, there is a lot of food here for my wps. Maybe later they'll stop for food, till then I'm drooling over your pileated photo! Take extra photos for me!!

Margaret, beautiful picture of the Kookaburra and the Pelicans are so colorful. Do you recall if the pelicans' bills turn orange like our White Pelicans do? I see an orange tip on one of yours. I love that circle around the eyes!

I'm having a great time with the peanut butter/nuts log. The Brewer Blackbirds are getting aggressive since I have different sizes of perches on it. Not a great picture, but you get the idea.

We went to the north end of the lake and I found this beautiful Great Egret which just sat still for my camera. The fog was just burning off of the lake and it was so pretty to watch.

I was able to get fairly close, guess it had a full tummy.

This Great Blue Heron was hunting in some vegetation.

We get some blue herons here too, they are a beautiful and elegant bird. I found out that if you are quiet enough, you can usually get pretty close to them. Could someone please tell me what kind of hawk I took a picture of?

beautiful duc egret duc...such a peaceful setting too.

Margaret, those pelicans just are too cool! Their eyes don't look real!

Teddy, I agree with Rose, but you can post your photos in "Bird Identification" for someone to give their opinion.

Go to this link-http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1144585/
Then click on Post A New Thread and fill it in, adding your photos. Someone will answer you fairly soon.

It is great to see your pics Margaret...I just love the Kookaburra, it is such a cool looking bird. I seem to remember seeing a pic you took of the Pelicans doing something strange with their bottom bill. Am I nuts or do you still have the pic? I agree with Nanny, those eyes are unreal!

Tiger...hope you get more pics to share, that Heron shot is beautiful.

Duc...That Egret is gorgeous...needs to be framed!

The Artic air is moving in and we will have a high of 19 degrees tomorrow. I think the birds are anticipating the cold weather and are eating like little piggies. The only time they leave the feeders is when a Raptor is threating....they are very active also.

Stay warm everyone.....

Thanks for the advice, I went there and posted the pic and asked if anyone knows what it is.

Good memory, Rose. Here it is. It really is whacky, isn't it?

Duc, their bills remain the same colour.

I've gotta ask, what is he doing with his bill? I have never seen a pelican do that. The page I went to ask about the bird, they say it is a coopers hawk but they are not sure. It is a good shot and a beautiful bird anyway, whatever it is. I hope it comes back so I can get a better shot of it, maybe with its wings spread. That would be a lucky shot.

teddy, Resin says they do this to maintain the suppleness of the bill. I've seen them do it a couple of times. Here's a shot the second time I saw it occur.
