Sally, keep us posted on how those daffodil bulbs do, I lost track on my paper whites I had last spring. With me being so fatigued last spring-summer I just lost most of my gardening enthusiasm. But the old spark is returning, Yea!
Did you check at Lowes or Home Depot for the bamboo ?
Hanging in there part 5
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!! This will be a better year because we will make it so! Think happy thoughts every day!
Holly, I thought about that too and how we can now chat without worry. I still say prayers, but it's nice to be back to normal.
He sure did do well. Hardly any pain, and playing and talking. You would never know it happened. I'm hoping the talking thru the nose and continous stuffy nose is gone now.
Chris, if you have a problem or don't feel good, don't hesitate to bring it up. The thought of cancer is always in the back of my mind, so it's not forgotten.
Anne, I remember now that I briefly had an asparagus fern when I was just starting to bring plants home. Mine died. Maybe I'm glad :o)
Gita, laughing, it it the plant of the amateurs? I do have a varigated spider plant with wide leaves my Dad gave me. My cousin gave him two and he kept one, LOL! I also had a prayer plant and the perilla my Great Aunt called Chicken Gizards. Seriously!
Chris, that is gorgeous! So is the Bergmansia!
I'm glad you're doing well right now. I would do just as you are about the plans and any future treatments. There's plenty of time to eat good foods and build your immune system up.
Thanks Onewish!
Doc, I got on the treadmill yesterday and today. I gots some of those Holiday Fats you're talking about! ROTFL over the mirrors! I would welcome them! Truth is a great motivator and if I lift weights, I have trouble keeping my elbows in. It helps to do it in front of a mirror.
Chris, I was in bed by 8:00 pm because during the last 5 minutes of Criminal Minds, my eyes were shut, LOL! I love that show. It was the witness protection guy who's daughter was kidnapped along with her friend.
Anne, cool on the potted bulbs. If they're big enough I'd expect a bloom.
Did you try Googling the bamboo? You can save the picture and use it.
Doc, it sounds like a great place to work out!
Gita, we think alike, but you went the extra step!
It's an icy west wind and since there is no mail, I've made all the trips outdoors that I'm going to make.
Sally, I have a pretty nice one I will see if I can get you a good pic.
doc, that sounds like a very nice gym. Ours has no natural light whatsoever, another mild discouragment in my eyes. ( It does not take much for me to whine about going in to workout LOL)
Gita that second one is just meant for Chris- see the froggies? Imagine that with about five more layers, I saw one --- that looked like a Christmas tree.
I have to be careful of copyright things- it may not be allowed for me to use something copied from another site.
Pics didn't come out too good either too dark or too light but I will try again tomorrow. I will say that I always feel good after I go to the gym but getting there is always my problem. Ric got me an MP3 player to wear while I walk and since I plan to do that Half Marathon my self next year I better start walking again soon.
Holly- melody(admin) took a nice picture and sent it to me. If you get a good one any shape I might use it in the body of the article. No pressure! It can be rally hard to get good indoor plant pics. Sometimes I have to run out on the deck and get a quick picture before the plant gets chilled.
I felt good after the gym yesterday, and especially since the day was so mild later I was outside. I can see I will get bored quick though. if I stick with cycle. I may try the Zumba class.
I have a standard senior membership which includes several classes a week and seven day access. I can not do classes because I do not have the stamina to keep up with a class. My oxygen needs take about a minute or two between sets on the cross body machines. I can only do lite work on a bike and nothing on a tread mill or other similar standard every gym equipment. I can do very well on the strength machines given time to recover between sets. I can pump iron with the same consideration. My health insurance picks up the tab so there is no excuse for most people over sixty five years of age. I'm covered on Medicare Part D. The benefit is such that I would pay if Medicare Part D did not.
After several years of two to three times a week I can say my strength and overall body condition is better than it was when I was fifty. I only have 37% lung function. This can not be improved. In fact it may be slowly going the other way. I do not use trainers. I just go in and work three hours to get an honest hours work done.
Doc--
You are to be congratulated for your stick-to-it-iveness. Work outs are too time-demanding....
Two yeas ago, I signed up at my local Sr, Center for fitness classes.
Paid my $65 and went only Three times. So much for that!
WHY???? Because it was so below my level of fitness already.
Doing the required rotations at 5 minutes on each piece of equipment--and then waiting
for some other piece of equipment to become available for a long time--I decided
this was NOT for me! So I stopped going....
I need a bit more challenging level of exercises to stay interested---BUT--at the same time--
I am NOT going to pay mega bucks to belong to a Gym. I know that I will not be going there
all that often. Other things interfere.....Gardening---Work---Shopping and cooking and all that....
Nope! I know not to commit to anything that costs money to join. I know I won't be following up!
More power to you that CAN stick to it!!!! Congrats!
Gita
Anne, good to remember copy rights. It;s so easy to take a picture these days.
I have to read when I'm on the treadmill. It's the only way to make the time pass. What do I read? Cook books, naturally!
Doc, at least you go and do what you can! Jack Lalaine puts me to shame. I'm sorry about your lungs. Can I ask the problem?
Gita, yoga may be for you. I got into it one year and for some reason never found the time again. I still want to get back into it. I printed off about a hundred sheets of poses and what they are good for. It's a wealth of information. I also have an exercise ball and it suprises me that I'm not using it. I get in a routine and out the window good intentions go :o(
Everyone have a nice Sunday. January has begun and we need to make the best of everything!
I was a heavy smoker. There is no other worthy reason for the lung disease. When I can no longer exercise the disease will go racing to my demise. It is about that simple. My medicine has really bad side effects. I get to live by taking it and it will kill me with side effects when it has run it's course. If I stop taking the medicine I can not breathe. There are no cures out there or expected in the immediate future. When the time is right I will stop the present medicine and call for the codeine. Meanwhile I shall stay as active as I can be.
Doc, looks like we are in the same boat, we just keep sailing along till we hit the next iceburg.
So far the doc and I have been able to melt the icebergs. LOL Problem is the ice melt is pretty serious medicine and not nice either if one reads the fine print.
The fine print is pretty scary, when I think of all the side effects that were possible with every thing pumped into me I fell pretty lucky. The one that I am on now could lead to another cancer. Or it is not working at all and my liver is having a field day, I'll know in a few weeks what it is doing. I know just where to push and so far so good.
I am making up for all thoses years I never took pills or needed a Dr. now she is my best friend.
Doc, I consider myself as, have been, a heavy smoker, but quit at 39 years old. I started when I was 16. I'm very sorry for your situation. A SIL is now going thru breathing therapy and is on oxygen. She smoked for years, only quitting a few years ago. She also sanded a lot of ceramics and painted them for many years. I think that contributed to it. She coughed for a long time.
You have my prayers. I applaud you trying to get as much life out of it as you can.
Chris, it is scary just hearing the things you've been thru. We can only hope prayers help with the prescriptions. There are no easy answers or cures, but both of you are still here, and I'm glad!
Hey, I don't plan on cashing in soon. I have a lot of gardening to do. LOL
I did smoke too when I was young, but gave it up early. I was surprised when the Plastic surgeon that I consulted with for reconstruction, said that even that short time, 5 years, would have an effect on the results.
Chris, I wish I had never smoked. It's my biggest regret. Drinking is second. I don't do either now, so better late than never.
I sorted thru all my saved seeds yesterday and made a list on a spreadsheet. Now I can sort alphabetically, by year, etc. I do know I better see if I can get some of them to grow.
I'm not going to sit back and be lazy this year. I made a lot of excuses, like, too many mosquitos and no bed is ready. I couldn't help the rain, but this year is going to be busier!
I've started my seed order but MUST go see what I still have- or must I? What the hey if I have an extra pack of lettuce
Anne, you must look! It still won't matter if you buy that extra lettuce. Like spinich, a lot goes a little ways :o)
I was glad to find seed of things that didn't grow so well and I thought I might lose. Now I can sprinkle seed around the few plants left, such as the Standing Cypress. I had a huge bed of it, and it was almost gone last year! Yikes!
We had the nicest lettuce last summer put in some mixed lettuce and I would go out and cut some fresh for salads. Had so much that my daughter would come every week and cut some. We grew it in a row with the spinach and it looked pretty, too.
Holly, it sounds delicious! I read, a long time ago, that picking lettuce right after it rained took the bitterness out. I've only grown lettuce a couple of times and never tried it.
I do plant much spinich! We ate a bag from the freezer yesterday, along with one of many squash in the closet. Only a few more months to eat everything to make room for the new!
I also need to get in and count jars I have left. I kept track of how many I canned so I know if it was overkill. So far, I think the green beans were overkill :o)
Good thing canned food lasts for years. I always tap the lid to make sure it's sealed and listen for the hiss when I pry the lid off.
I have to go through my seeds also. I know I have a packet of Oregon Sugar Peas, They will get planted in March. If I have lettuce seeds left I might try planting them under lights in the basement, I was going to do that last year but, that didn't happen. I just throw all my leftover lettuce seeds together some are old seeds some new and there is a mix off different greens so I have a salad bowl. LOL
This is my year for the vegetable garden, I'll have more time with only working 2 days a week so I can do a little each day that I am home, instead of trying to get it all done over the weekend.
Have any of you tried strawberry spinach? Pinetree has the seeds. My Spinach always bolts early for me before I get a good harvest, this might be a better choice.
Billy, Standing Cypress what is that?
Chris, the salad bowl is an exellent idea even with all new fresh packets! Cool!
I looked up the strawberry spinich last year and opted not to grow it. It will be interesting to hear from someone who has.
Standing Cypress is a scarlet-red spike of flowers and the leaves are short and ferny. They're biennial. My good friend who passed gave me the seeds. I can't lose them. I know they still sell them, but you know how it is with gifted plants.
I found two pictures.
In the Rose Bed. A lot in the middle were dug out to put the path in. but I didn't expect those on the sides to not grow.
In July
Gee, those are pretty. See, I learn something new every day.
The nice weather we are having, no snow and sunshine but pretty cold is getting the "I need to plant something" juices flowing. I know the Amarylis are on their way, and I need to get busy on cleaning out my plant area in the basement. When the sun is out it is hard for me to spend time down there.
Well I have to get ready for work, so I'll catch you all later this evening.
I bought strawberry spinach. I think it started out very delicate and when in the garden, just succumbed to some bugs. If anyone tires it, maybe allow more time to develop than you think.
That standing cypress is so pretty and I have never seen it before.
My five packets of fresh seed are ordered. I plan to use about three seeds from each packet except for lettuce which I tuck in all open space early in the season and pull it as the other items need to expand. This and a half pound of onion sets stuck very early in the flower pots will be my whooping big garden this year.
I like your idea of getting an early harvest of onions & lettuce from your flower pots! Succession planting!!
Indoor lettuce sounds good, too... something to use the space under the lights before the seedlings fill the shelves! I tried lettuce seeds in my outdoor railing planters last year and didn't do too well with them. There are a lot of birds scratching in my deck containers, so maybe I need to start plugs for lettuce out there this year.
My pepper plants do better mixed in with my flowers then in the vegetable garden. I plant Gypsy (thanks Jill) and when they start to turn yellow and red they are very attractive among the flowers.
Even a small garden will produce a lot of satisfaction at the dinner table. I usually start more tomato plants then I need so I give what I have left to the girls at work. I grow 2 to 3 verities and only plant 2 each.
Ladygardener----and all of you.
It is seldom one gets something this amazing in a forward.
I know Christmas is over---but this is worth listening to.
Excuse the brief diversion. It is so peaceful to listen to this!
Gita
This is beautiful!
See this video at: http://worriersanonymous.org/Share/Christmas/Holynite.htm
Gita, that is beautiful, I like Celtic Women, I catch their performances on our Public TV station. I just love when the violinist plays, she is so talented as well as the other singers.
ROFL! I'm not ready for spring... especially since we're having such pretty blue sky winter days lately...
This sunny weather is lulling us into Spring thinking. Not to mention those great seed catalogs
Spring, bunnies, cuteness-- all go together!!
It was so mild last week that I took an Agalaonema out for neem spraying and forgot it overnight. I will now see how it reprouts. It'll either be nice and bushy, or really ugly, or croak completely. It had mealybugs anyway- why do I bother?
We had a good dusting of snow last night and Suzie snowflake and friends have been dancing down all day today.
I started a big pot of soup for today and into the rest of the week until I get tired of it and bag what is left for the freezer. It is always good for lunch any time.
Expecting snow tomorrow and Friday...as my mom always said "we get snow every Russian Christmas(Jan 7th)"
I love winter and wish I would have taken up more winter sports when I was younger....I think I would have enjoyed skiing more.
We lived on a lake growing up and was out there every winter skating.
Suzy Snowflake- bring a few friends down here. Not too many mind you...
We had soup tonight also. Its becoming my Wednesday thing as I have to work at 5, about all they can manage is to scoop something into a bowl and have bread with it maybe.
Jen, I love skating on a pond. Bumpy but scenic. Its really hard down here #1 to have enough cold and #2 to find a pond that somebody won't kick you off for danger.
