Would have to look at the plant tag to tell you what it is.

Susie, I really don't understand why you only recd. such a puny amount of that white stuff?
Good weather to stay in or home. I should be up stairs in my craft room starting on some recipe books I am going to make for my 2 daughters, 2 granddaughters and 2 nieces. All recipes are from family and most are over 75 yrs. old and I have made all of them. Daughters will recognize most of them as I made them all the time they were growing up. One never gets rid of favorites as there is so many memories involved in them.
Now we don't eat enough to make them. Only make them when our family is home and try to make one for each one that is there favorite. Hope I made my self clear on that? goes for the canning I do also, especially their favorite pickles, like beet pickles, water mellon pickles, I think you know what I mean.

We had 7 inches of snow today and the world has come to a standstill. Most winters we have a few snows with a dusting or maybe an inch. Some years we have none. About once a decade we have a real snow. It appears that this year is going to be one of those.
I almost did not come home today because the roads are treacherous, but I am glad I made the effort. This is the biggest box of seeds I have ever seen in a Round Robin!
I know what I will be doing this evening and if I can't get out tomorrow I will have plenty to do!

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Your Winters sound like ours usually are, unless you count last year's when we barely saw the ground for weeks. Worst snowy Winter in recent memory and set a 100 year record on the East Coast, but do remember the blizzard of '96 when we lost power and our land line phones for 4 days. Hubby was working out of town and I was home alone. Thank goodness for the woodstove, kept warm by it and cooked on it. Our "no freeze" of course froze and resorted to pulling icicles and gathering buckets of snow to melt so our Lab, who had just had a litter of 8 pups, would have drinking water and I for coffee and cooking. I'm after you but won't be home most of the day Thursday and Saturday is iffy. Sounds like hot cocoa and Google will go hand-in-hand as you enjoy spending time going through the Robin.

Maxine, did you carport just collapse under the weight of the snow?

all that snow. so nice to look at, to remember what it was like to shovel it, play in it, get stuck in it ! however, now that i am old , sure dont miss it. one of the reasons i dont live in NY anymore. It was a lot warmer than that here today, got a lot done outside, nothing inside. oh well, rain is supposed to be here in the next few days, which i will totally enjoy. a decent rainfall is something i really miss.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Yes, it did. The only thing that got smashed was the sunroof on his Jetta VW.
I spent the morning yesterday on the phone with the insurance company and got a name of a company that replaces them not too far from us and it won't cost us a thing. Not going to grumble any more when I pay the insurance bill!! Nice people to work with!

-20 below here this morning. Glad I don't have to drive, but DH has too. Plan now is to work on cook books that I am trying to make for daughters, 2 granddaughters, and 2 nieces. Paper and every thing is laid out and I hand write all of the recipes that come from my side and DH's side. Most are from 75 to 100 yrs. old and are tried and true. Not short on calories though, but those are the best, aren't they?? At least I think so.

Maxine

Oh forgot to say, I also tell them who the recipe is from name, middle name, name before married and then married name. Kinda makes it personal. 2 nieces are too young to remember my Mother as the oldest was only 5 when she died.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

Maxine That IS One of the best gifts for them they might not realize it now but when they reach their late 50's & 60's they will Say Oh My I Remember the christmas Grandma gave me this Cookbook :)

ALANA : Hope you Get to enjoy the robin today & Just be able to enjoy all the fun:)

SUSan : Did you say your going to be gone this weekend ? can you have your mail man still maybe leave it at a Neighbors place ?? Not sure this ROBIN will fit in a mail box .
it proble won't be there till SATURDAY Anyway .

well i have to go make a few pancakes for the critters it is a bitter cold out side but not buried in snow like the rest of you. Be safe everyone . back later .

Barbourville, KY(Zone 7a)

I am not going anywhere today. My driveway is 1/4 mile long up a hill and even if the roadway is clear temperatures are in the teens and I won't be able to get out to it today. I have a friend that will clear a path for me after taking care of more urgent concerns. Tomorrow I will have to be on the road before the PO opens and home after it closes, so I will probably not mail the package out until Thursday. Fruitcake probably won't receive it until Monday anyway with the holiday crush.
In the meantime, I have enjoyed a leisurely morning and more than one cup of coffee going through the box. Most of it is large baggies of seeds and seedheads to share out and I have taken seeds from several of those without making a dent in the sheer volume of seeds.
The box will be going back out packed full once again.

I would like to thank everyone who put in seeds for me. Susie, you really hit the mark. I have a feeling you peeked at a want list on another Garden site. Sneaky or intuitive, either way, I appreciate what you sent!

I am going to go back through the box one more time before I pack it up for the next leg of the journey. This time, the weather is working for me.

Have a good day, folks,
Alana

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Only 9 more people before it gets to me...yahhhhhhhhh! GM all I hope everyone is having a fantabulous day!

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

We don't have snow, Susie, but it's so blasted cold when you figure in the wind chill factor, I haven't decided whether I want to try to brave the madhouse in the stores Saturday or finish the little Christmas shopping left online. Either way Hubby will be here to get the mail, whether the Robin arrives Saturday or next week it will be safe :)

Fruitcake...lol my least favorite cake although my Dad loved my Mom's. She made hers with so much candied fruit and Pecans from our trees there was just enough batter to hold them together. In early November, she started taking orders and basically sold Fruitcakes and fresh Coconut Orange cakes for $5 over the cost of ingredients and that was her "mad money" to either spend on Christmas presents or squirrel away. What I did enjoy, and wish I had a recipe for, is no-bake icebox cookies. Seems like she made some like fruitcake and others that were chocolate.

Maxine, the gals in your family are going to treasure their keepsake cookbooks and I hope they'll pass them down to future generations. What a wonderful gift. I only wish I had thought to ask my Mom to write down more of her recipes. I do have her Better Crocker cookbook, from the 1940' I believe, and not only treasure it but her handwritten notes in the margins. Occasionally a recipe falls out she'd either clipped from the back of a box or cut out of a magazine.

Hey Anita, do you think you'll receive the Robin by Valentine's Day? Might be some kind of chocolate seeds in it...lol

Sand Springs (Tulsa), OK(Zone 7a)

Hi gals...... i am in a RR 'somewhere'!!!!!, but can't figure out where. I don't have a list of the robin's landing schedule, so I'm guessing this isn't the one I'm on this time.

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Susan, you already have my mouth watering thinking about fruitcake and coconut orange cake! Whoa that sounds good!!! Fruitcake is one of my favorites. The store bought cakes I can pass on but homemade fruitcake is enough to send me over the edge. Hanything with fruit and nut has got my vote.

I hope I get the Robin by Valentines Day! That would be lovely! I might still have time to do some wintersowing.

What is everyone looking forward to getting or doing for Christmas? This may sound corny but other than eating all of my favorite foods, I'm looking forward to going bowling with the family. I'm sure something hilarious will happen!

Blue Ridge Mtns, VA(Zone 7a)

Is this the link you're looking for, Patti? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1141449/
If it isn't, you could go back through the threads you've posted on and find it there. Sorry, Hon, wish I could be more help.

I take it, Anita, you've tried Claxton fruitcakes, at least that the store-bought brand around here that comes in mini loaves. Oh my gosh, you would have loved my Mom's coconut orange cakes with sour cream in the icing and think it was in the layers too. It was my job to whack the coconut with a hammer, drain the juice in a glass jar, and peel the coconut with one of my Dad's homemade knives that I still have. Nothing bottled compares to drinking fresh coconut juice, and that was long before we knew how healthy it is, or licking batter off the beaters which isn't so healthy...lol. Now you've got MY mouth watering.

We're celebrating Christmas twice. My SIL won't be here til the first week of January. I'll cook a traditional meal for hubby and I and hope my MIL will be able to join us Christmas Day. Her B-Day is December 23rd. Mentioned to my SIL today she best be booking her flight before seats become slim pickins.

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

Fruit cake ohhhhh I am one who loves it and I was born in Georgia so got a lot of Claxtons.

Will you share the orange cake recipe? I remember having tit when I was young and have not had it since I have grown up.

Thanks FOTV ..... I'll give it a try.

Western, WI(Zone 4a)

Fruit, I was married in 1954 and received a "Betty Crocker" cook book as a wedding gift. That was a big gift in those days. It is very battered and splattered as I used it all the time. My mother very seldom opened a cook book and I am getting more like her every day as my best recipes are in my head. Had to buy both girls one when they got married and think they use them also all the time.

Would also like the "Coconut Orange" cake recipe. PLEASE

Recd. another seed catalog from Baker Creek seeds in Missouri. All heirloom. Lots of seeds in there that I would like to try, if I was only a little younger.

Beef Bourguignon - it is French and should actually be Beouf Bourguigon. It is made with lots of wine! I love cooking and I love eating too! I am a Foodnetwork junkie! Here is the recipe - I have had it out, but never made it. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/beef-bourguignon-recipe/index.html.

Anita - I want to do taste testing with you too! We could roam the country!

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

Hubby is retired and watches food channel a lot and tapes things.
He is driving me nuts I love to cook but a recipe a day to try is way to much and as for Rachel Ray, I have way to many recipes but have done lots of them

I found 9 Coconut orange cake recipes on the web and they all sound and look good
