Texas Wildscape Native Seed Trade Thread
Are you talking about seed packets...if so WM has the clear plastic $1 for 100 I think it was.
No I meant for sowing.
C
I here That!!!
Saving milk jugs and water jugs as we speak. I am going to sow some of every type in a couple containers and what I have left is for anyone else. I keep ordering seeds so I guess I need to drink more milk...
C
Why do you sow them in containers? Just wondering. I just mix them with potting mix and toss them or make seedballs. After all they're natives, they know when to grow. I have 1/4 acre just for Wildflowers and if we get enough rain its beautiful.
Im trying to get the d**** tiny seeds out of the Horsemint seedheads ARGH... pound pound pound
Well, I just winter planted or sowed some of my seeds, 36 4 inch pots, that is two trays of 18 pots each.
Lisa, I put them in pots because i don't want to run the risk of them getting lost. When you have few seeds you don't want to leave it to chance. I also put plastic trays upside down on to of the trays that hold the pots, if I leave them uncovered the squirrels will destroy them. Both trays are on a shelf on my patio, we shall see what happens.
Josephine.
frostweed, i apologize, i probably wont get home til end of January, when I do, if there are wildseeds left, I will bag them, or dig them, depending on the area they are, wish i was there...oh, my coral honeysuckle is actually trumpet honeysuckle, orange
So Kittriana are you saying that you can't participate?
No, not really, want to badly, but am chasing around everywhere but Texas- and home- for these holidays- hauling your turkeys and hams to the grocery stores, chuckle. Cant be there for what I have til they take me off the robot list, sigh. Am in Russellville, Ar tonite, Ardmore, Ok tomorrow, and that is my everyday of the week day...a new city every day
Well it looks like you are one busy girl, just hang in there, and who knows? you could get some seeds from people anyway.
that would be nice...hope so, will save what seeds I do find and remember ya all!
So you don't cover them with plastic? This is my first time to try this and all the information I could find looks like they set up mini green houses.
C
I cover mine in the milk jugs. The only problem I have is removing the seedlings in the spring.
The reason to put a cover on them is to hold the moisture more than for insulation, but I plant to water mine as needed and keep a close watch on them.
I see, I might try both methods to compare and because I do not have enough covers.
C
frostweed, thanks for putting this together.
I like sharing my native seeds with others who appreciate them.
Some of my offerings are limited to what I have already collected, and others, I can still collect more.
I admit, I'm in another seed swap right now but I've pulled any natives to share here ^_^
You should make it an annual event, there are lots of other seeds that I can try to collect come spring.
RE: wintersowing,
We don't drink anything out of a jug so, last year I winter sowed in yogurt and other plastic containers~it worked quite well. I put plastic over the top with a rubberband. or I cut the top out, except the rim and put the plastic on that way, then used the excess lids to make the tags when I put the seedlings in the ground.
Monday I took my walk and got what I could. DJ's RR landed here that day and I've been busy going thru those seeds. I'm trying to wrap it up today and post my short list tonite or in the morning. I'd prefer to have them bagged and tagged before I list but I need the get my list in here ASAP, so the quanity will be update by Thursday or Friday.
I am a Newbie and this is my second Robin. I would like to see another Tx Native Robin happen next year also. I have a few NOID's that need to wait til spring to flower for an ID and a few still blooming.

MaryAnn,
How well does chocolate flower grow for you? I have been wanting that plant for a while and wondering what conditions it likes.
C
It isn't the most beautiful wildflower we have, but the scent is quite good when the heat is over 80 deg...I have mine in sun right off of the patio...it is in a raised bed for drainage and I water it almost weekly when it's blooming...give it lots of room...one plant covers an area of about 4'x4' during one season...I will cut mine down to the ground after the first real cold wave hits it...
maryann
Maryann, I will have to give those a try sometime. Very nice list.

I think that having a native seed swap every fall would be a great tradition, let us plan on doing it.
Josephine.
What about echinacea of the plain purple variety? I have tons of those seeds. Are they considered natives?
Yes, Echinacea purpurea is native;

Woohoo! I probably have enough for everyone plus then some! LOL
Great Stephanie, I love them, and you can never have too many.
OK I'm just going to mix what I get with potting soil and toss them or make seedballs. I honestly could not grow wildflowers or poppies until I started doing it this way. I could never get them to survive transplant. So I'll keep everybody posted on how they do. The 3 areas that I sow them in are all from direct sowing or self sowing. We can consider it an experiment. IT would really help me out if it rained tho.
That is very pretty Lisa, and an experiment would be good. Well if it doesn't rain bring out the trusty hose.
The one area, the 1/4 acre, can't really be reached by hose. I kind of like to see how they do under natural conditions. The other two areas do get watered. I must admit if I get the seeds out there it is always beautiful in the spring. This year the Blackeye Susans were 2' tall and so thick I could hardly walk through them. Its also nice because when one plant stops blooming another starts so there is always color. I enjoy watching the way nature does it, once I get the seeds out there.
Wow, I had no idea they were that big. I learned my lesson about that with the giant cowpen daisy that ate the other plants in the bed.

Very good Dane, it looks like it is going to be a very good and fun swap.
I have my family Thanksgiving meal tomorrow, so if someone asks for something when the trading starts don't be offended if I don't respond until late or on Sat. I hope you all had a safe blessed day with good food, friends and family.
Sheila trading doesn't start until Sunday.
Yes, that will be everyone a chance to get all the gatherings over with.
Good....for some reason I had it Sat..... Oh...that is my DH's birthday, that is why the 27th sounded familiar!
Up for coffee and then the fun starts! Later all.
lol - I guess he is getting wildflower seeds?
Wow! I just know he would be thrilled, don't you think?
He hasn't told me what he wanted. We have a 6yr old for the next night or two, so DH may not even get a birthday card! LOL! My Turkey Day is over family has gone.....caught a 30 min nap so I can keep up with Caden.
Is 30 minutes enough LOL. How fun to have a six year old in the house...
