CLOSED: DJ9'S WINTER ROBIN " IN FLIGHT " PT 2

i can remember my mom doing the same thing with the thank yous. to this day i am compelled to send them, just seems wrong if i dont.

Nineveh, NY(Zone 5a)

My daughter is 4 and LOVES to write letters to relatives. I guess it depends on what the parents teach.

Athens, PA

That is because we were brought up differently. My kids were brought up with that too, but do you think they would send out a written thank you? Don 't get me wrong, they will call and say thank you and it is always nice to hear from them, but it still isn't a written thank you.

wait till she gets to texting age, it all goes out the window.

unfortuntely technology and what their peers do will trump what is taught when young. on the reverse of that, my mom, bless her, made us all write thank yous, letters to those in other states, etc, but then she would just get on the phone and call, never wrote letter herself, but made sure we did. and this was back in the 60's.

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

My granddaughter is 5 and she loves to write. She can spell very few words on her own but has no problem asking how to spell each word in the letter. She will grab a cell phone and send a text message before you can blink. Not that the text message will be actual words. LoL she can also fiddle her way through ipods, computers and handheld games. I'm not sure what is in the water these days but it's breeding a lot of techies. LoL

(Di) Seven Mile, OH(Zone 6b)

My nephew's wife - age 25 - thought I was crazy when I said that the least someone could do was send a thank you note after receiving a 'special' present such as a wedding, bridal shower, baby shower or new baby gift.

Then she told me that she never sent out thank-yous because she didn't think it was necessary - to which I replied, "I know, that's why you'll never get another one from us." Both SIL and my MIL said they agreed 100%. I'm sure it made her mad but her tone of voice when telling me that it wasn't needed just got to me. I absolutely hate to write anything (I'm with Sherm's mom-lol) but I always wrote out my thank-yous because someone took the time to get me something nice.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

I Agree To Thanks Card When It Comes to Weeding Gifts , Bridal Gifts , Baby Gifts , as for a B-day Gift if they hand the gift to you Then take the time to acknowledge the gift & Give a hug & TY , Right then & There .

I Stopped sending Christmas cards To all But If I recieve a card then I Do send a card to them to thank them & wish them Happy Holidays . I Should say I Don't send as Many As I Did years back .

it has been quite a day So off i go to find a movie Thank you all for your input & Understanding
I DIDN"T Get my seeds planted today but hope to this week :)

Good nite all OH & THE ROBIN IS In FLa .

maybe the thoughtfulness is what is missing now, i dont know. common courtesy seems to be gone. I guess we are just from a different generation that saw things in a whole other way.
just seems so sad all these kids hooked up to electronics and not communicating at all ( i say as i type on my computer)

i also dont send as many Christmas cards as i used to, but i agree with Deejay, if i receive one the person will get one in return. maybe we should start a christmas card swap.

Bird in Flight!

Barbourville, KY(Zone 7a)

Yikes! It's closer than I thought. I will check in more often.

Winston Salem, NC

Woo hoo! I'll let you know when the bird arrives.

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

The Fat Robin's flight pattern seems to be right on schedule with my guessing! LoL
Poisondartfrog, I'm guessing you will get the big fat Robin on 12/15. What do you think?

What are you all doing to satisfy your gardening appetite? I have some things growing inside under grow lights, mainly my tropicals brought in from outside. I started some Brug seeds and Split Leaf Philodendrons. My Brugs have not sprouted yet. I plan to start winter sowing soon.

(Di) Seven Mile, OH(Zone 6b)

Same here, Anita...I have plenty of my tropicals under grow lights right now and just started into brugs. I was lucky enough to get some really nice ones from wonderful DG's and I have 12 potted up and 4 still in water starting to get nubs on them. I'm going to try wintersowing although I'm sure I will mess it up - always happens on the first try of anything new with me. Only 4 months until April - yay! Countdown is on :)

Di

i'm trying to recover from what i lost in the past weeks frost. no rhyme or reason to the devastation, sometimes in a row of identical plants some died some were untouched. have to rethink what i am planting.

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh no Sherman! What did you lose? Maybe I have the seeds or plants?????

almost all my annual flowers that were still blooming, so i am not to upset about that, will reseed in spring. just hate no more flowers till then
corkscrew vines, trumpet vines crepe myrtle, didnt realize that hardy in zone 9 does not mean all of zone 9, sigh, live and learn.

i have to pay more attention to the temp range rather than the zone. the zone thing is not working for me, and yet, none of the basils were touched, and i expected them to die off.

you are very kind to offer but with what i got from the robin i am ok. just have to learn why some areas of this property freeze and others do not. nothing in the creek bed froze, maybe because it is a bit lower in places?
just have to keep trying.

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Sherman, Thats interesting. I would be curious to find out why that happens as well. Either Dane or Rick offered some information in another post about the climatic zones. i will go back through the posts to look for the info. I thought it was interesting.

i would greatly appreciate any help i can get. this temp thing is so hard to figure out.

Concord, NH

cant wait cant wait ITS getting CLOSER! cant wait cant wait...........

Houma, LA(Zone 9a)

Is it too late for this newbie to get on this list? If so, can ya'll recommend when, which and how to go about getting involved with a robin? I sure appreciate all the help. I'm slowly but surely starting to catch on. There is sooo much to do and learn on DG. This website is a godsend.
Ben

susie

Houma, LA(Zone 9a)

Anita, I'm so sorry. I haven't received any emails. Yes, I have done about seven trades so far, but just individual trades. I'm not all that clear on how the robin trades work, but I want to get involved with as much as I can on DG. I'll send Susie an email right now.

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Ben, I know you probably didn't get the dmails. LoL Every time I tried to send my screen would display an error message and the dmails never showed up as a sent message.

Susie has you covered. If you decide to participate you will be happy with the RR. Its been a lot of fun and we have a good group of participants that are very helpful and fun to chat with.

Sherman, what annuals did you have planted? I did find an old post that mentioned the NOAA web site. There's another that explained the most used USDA plant zones. If I remember correctly, it only lists the plants that grow in areas based on the temperature without taking into consideration the many factors that would affect the temperature like bodies of water, concrete and mountains. I will find that info for you. If Dane or Rickey sign on they will know exactly what link I'm referring to.

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Sherman, Dane was the person who posted the info about the factors affecting growing condtions. It was the http://www.sunset.com/garden/climate-zones

Everett, WA(Zone 8a)

>> corey I think is Buried In Snow Drifts

Actually, the first day of frost was followed by 4 days of snow. In typical western WA style, the total accumulation was barely an inch, but traffic came to a slipepry halt and everyone panicked. We seem not to have discovered snow plows, here, at least not off the highway system. Then it all melted and we are back to "mild".

One lady in the PNW forum remarked "well, now that winter is over ..."

All I know about microclimates (variation within a zone) is that there are many factors I can't remember. Slopes have a big effect and so do breezes. I thought that cold air ran downhill, but nothing died in your creek bed.

My theory is that temperature (and humidity and wind chill) are only half the factors. It also matters what your plants were doing when the cold hit them. If they had "warning" and were settled down for their long winter nap ("vernalized"?) even a hard frost down to 28 might not bother them much. But if they were still feeling warm and lively, growing or trying to, and not at all vernailzed yet, even a brief shot of 32 or 31 might kill a lot of the aboveground parts.

Using that theory to argue backwards, maybe the creek bed has been cooler for seevral weeks than more exposed areas. Those plants already shut down for the season and were prepared for the cold weather when it came. The plants not in the bed were expecting continued warmth and couldn't handle the stress.

Or, maybe the creek bed just sheltered its plants from wind chill during the recent chill, and that made all the difference.

Sunset says that where I live, the microclimate effects are so strong that the "zone" can change several times within just one neigborhood.

I just know that I saw 0 degree weather in a zone that is only supposed to go down to 10-15 (on average). So now I'm cautious.

Corey

Maybe you have more roots surviving than you do bloms and leaves.

Athens, PA

Microclimates can work for you if you can figure out where they are. Anything closer to your home is warmer. Also, if your yard is fenced in, then it is not a seceptable ( I know that is spelled wrong..), to hard freezes.

I try to use the microclimates to my advantage. I had a real nice Montana Clematis growing that is hardy to zone 7. It did very well, even in my zone 5 until the voles killed it. Ironic, isn't it?

Anyway, the trick is to find out where these microclimates exist.
