CLOSED: DJ9'S WINTER ROBIN " IN FLIGHT " PT 2

Athens, PA

I have heard very mixed reviews of the R. Cherry Brandy. I have not tried them myself yet, but would love to see photos that others have grown. I don't trust the photos that are put out there by the companies that are selling them.

Diamond - your gardens are gorgeous. Mine are always a hodgepodge and not as neat looking as yours.

Dane - the corn plant is really neat. Looks like a dracena - is it? I'd love to see the flowers on it....

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Carolyn, thanks, my gardens are a lot neater than the inside of my house. LoL I may have a picture of my CB. They bloomed later and did not put out nearly as many blooms as the other Ruds. I may have a picture.

Dane, I would love to see your blooms as well. I don't think I have ever seen blooms on a Corn Plant.

Anita -

thanks for posting the CB - I like the color, but they are rather sparse looking. I would prefer something that is fuller - how about yourself. What are your feelings on the R. Cherry Brandy.

Deep South, TX(Zone 9b)

I got this house plant about 12 years ago. When we moved here the house proved not to be plant freindly so everything went outside. I accidently got it in a good place. It has been neglected mostly and has been froze back a couple times so it's not very tall. Iim pretty sure it is a night bloomer and it is usually late before I notice it.

Went to get a current picture and too late for the flowers. Good news is I got seeds. Even tho the flowers are brown and they have fallen off, the seeds seems green and they are sticky. I have them in a paper bag drying. I will reseach more but PF says to dry them and they don't stay viable for long. I have enough to share but I'm streaching the zone here. They are used inside alot and need shade here. If your interested or have more info on the seeds, let me know.

Thanks

Dane

Anita, yours are much darker than mine. Mine were a bright red. I can't find a picture of them, that I thought I took. I got a new computer this fall and am trying to work with Windows 7, which I detest!
I had Windows corporate edition and had used it for yrs. Also 7 does not accept outlook express which I have used for over 10 yrs. for e mail. What we installed was a free version and I don't like it, so think I will bite the bullet and order it to install later. I have to buy outlook express that is expressly for 7. Doesn't Bill Gates have enough money yet?

Anita, did you save any seeds from yours? If so, may I have a few?

Drizzle here all day, cold and dreary.

Maxine

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Dane I'm interested in a couple of seeds. I'll search the web for more info on Corn Plant seeds.

Carolyn, I still like the Cherry Brandy. I planted them with some of the Capaccino, Autumn Colors and Maya Ruds. They all accented each ohter well. I do prefer a fuller plant. I must say I have fallen in love with the Ruds. They are constantly blooming all summer.

columbia, TN(Zone 7a)

I did the Cherry Brandy year before last and they were an awful color of brown, got the seeds from HPS. Theresa what will you do with the wood crates? I have several

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Maxine, I'm sorry I missed your post earlier. I do have CB seeds and I would love to send you some. Is your information in the addy exchange is still current? Do you plan to winter sow? I want to winter sow CB again this year. I'm hoping the color will be different if exposed to different amounts of sunlight. LoL

Yes, its still in daves address exchange. I pd for another yr., but am amazed at the friends of mine who didn't.
I do plan on starting them in the greenhouse and will look and see if I have seeds from my original order. They would be 2 yrs. old, but I keep them in a dark room and also in a film container. They make excellent seed savers. I have had seeds 10 yrs. old and they are still viable keeping them like this. No windows and it gets very cold in my fruit cellar in the fall and winter.

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

Wow, that's cool I will have to remember that. I keep mine in the fridge.

Well, we got our first frost day ... and it has snowed some each day since. Now iot is supposed to go down to 17-19 two nights in a row, and not go back up to 32 until Wednesday.

I've lost my New England adaptation! "28" seems cold, and a little crusty snow on my windshield seems like an imposition.

FFFPPPTTT. Sissy!

Grrrrr .... I put all the requested seeds in a special place so they would be safe .... now for the life of me I can't recall where that special location might be ... next time I do something like that I will store the info in an e-mail to myself.

I know I will come across it before the Robin lands at my doorsteps .... for all those requests before me ... I will mail the send directly to you.

I have a 5:30 am flight to catch tomorrow to visit daughter and family in North Carolina.

22 yr old grandson will be guarding the house. But who will be guarding him??

Ever consider decoupage for those used black pots?

Mary

>> I put all the requested seeds in a special place so they would be safe

I know what you mean - for me that is the kiss of death. Once I lost something for three years that way. Maybe try to hide a few more seeds in a "really safe place" ... it may turn out to be the same place.

Once I can't find a thing, i try to remember the first few places I looked for it. One of those becomes my new3 place to store the thing (if I ever find it).

>> Ever consider decoupage for those used black pots?

Looking up "decoupage " ... Looking up "decoupage " ...

Hunnh! So it's NOT a low-cut ladies evening gown.

In that case, I guess I'm not as interested as I was at first.

Corey

Deep South, TX(Zone 9b)

The Robin has landed and it's big. It's in a diffrent box

It was like I was feeling eveyone's energy.......waiting.........

My method of winter sowing. I use flats with holes, line the flats with the 6pack cells that you buy annuals in, fill with potting mix sprinkle the seeds on top or cover slightly, and then use my garden sifters (2x4's with different gauges of wire screen for sifting out rocks) and flip them upside down over the flats so the squirrels can't get into them and set them off to the side on the driveway, when they start sprouting in the spring, I use a tiny nail scissors to clip all but one seedling in each cell and wait until the roots have filled the cell before planting out.

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

I'm not very crafty so I did not think about that but i have lots of family coming thursday & I just wanted to camofloge the pots to make them look a little cleaner :) got my tree up tonight will decorate tomorrow :)

Guess dane must be out planning what seeds will go where :))) .
I know I'm beat & Just need to lay back for the evening :) back for coffee in the AM :)

dane-no hard feelings at all. just live and learn

have to add this-what i learned is that somehow seeds can turn moldy just by traveling through wash. amazing.,

Very pretty DirtyGirl! Is that a Hibiscus?

Kobwebz, do you have pictures of your set up? I'm trying to picture your description. I'm looking for different ideas for winter sowing. There's nothing wrong with what I was doing last year but I would like to control the number of seedlings I transplant.

Dane, I'm really excited for you. Can't wait to hear about the seeds you discovered.

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

Mary sometime when you come down we need to meet. I love Buddy's seafood in your daughters town and we go there ever so often.

Lavina

Just popping up for air. And I was worried about the variety, Hah. I haven't seen this many types of seed in one place before.

Later

(Anita) Fort Wayne, IN(Zone 6a)

LoL @ Dane. I'm glad you are enjoying spending time with the Big Fat Robin. LoL I can hardly wait until she lands at my place. Dane, were your requested from me seeds correct? I got confused with the variety of coneflowers your requested. I had written down one type that I didn't have and I couldn't find the post of your request, so I sent what I had that was similiar.

Deep South, TX(Zone 9b)

I took a quick glance at what was in the envies and it's all a blur.

My DW loves Tomatoes, next to me, and she is having me take about 6 seeds from each type. It's a good thing I'm expanding the veggie patch. Don't worry there's plenty for all.

I'm afraid I'll have to do the same with the Holly Hocks and DW grows pansies for her Grams.

Having a ball,

Dane

Grantsboro, NC(Zone 8b)

What color are the Holly Hawks? I have double burgandy and would love to have more.
I am getting excited big time just a few more stops and the box is mine for the day.
Lavina

Deep South, TX(Zone 9b)

Pink, white, black, Mixed, singles, doubles and I think I saw burgundy but it might had been a diffrent plant. I'll let you know when I get to them.

I'm sure you'll find some you like.

& Chat My Kitchen is Open :)))

Athens, PA

Susie - my guess is December 22nd for the Robin to hit my house. I am concerned about seeds that maybe tender and frigid temps. I will be off from work, so I should probably listen for the mail lady.

Thanksgiving goodies? I keep thinking about blueberry scones......hmmmm!

(susie) Hastings, MI(Zone 5a)

carolyn need to take a guess as when the robin will reach MAXINES Before it gose on to the sec round if any one wants its .

Athens, PA

OK - I liked January 25th, but I see that has been taken - I guess it will be at Maxines on January 24th. Plenty of time left for Maxine to do her wintersowing......

Deep South, TX(Zone 9b)

I have a small bag of "spices and herbs" I need to go thru then I'll start packing it. There was some space when it got here so I will get a large flat rate nest to see if it will fit. I might have to leave out my coconut, sorry Dirtygirl.;)

With any Luck it should take off today, I'll try my hardest.

Thanks to all,

Dane
