What is a sparrowtrap? I have never heard of one before, if I could afford one, maybe the bb's would come to the feeder more often, my husband has seen a couple but I have yet to see one. We have 3 squirrels here at the same time, 1 on the ground and 2 on the tree, they love the Sunflower Seed. I throw out a couple of peanuts at the same time I put some seed on the platform on the tree. There were 2 of them just playing around earlier today, they were wrestling and chasing each other and one keeps looking at the camera as if to say I am ready for my close-up! They are funny creatures. They are so cute to watch. Will try to get a picture of some birds if they will stay long enough! This was the old feeder that the squirrels broke, we had just filled it up completely full. We went out to eat and when we came back it was in pieces on the ground, seed everywhere.
Daily Bird Pics Vol. 355
Resin, congratulations on that exciting heron sighting!
VA, love every one of your beautiful owls-great job!
Burd, glad your lake is recovering. Our lake is not without its problems too.
Kc, your little lady is beautiful. I'm surprised a female is able to drive off the males.
Dave, fantastic photos. Love the aggressive jays! Did that one actually get to tug the peanut from the other one? Sure looked like it might try. Hooray for the bluebird in the last photo.
I have another new bird that I have never ever seen here-a Red-breasted Nuthatch. I've been seeing the White-breasted Nuthatches around the neighborhood but not my feeders.
Beatiful series of shots duc!!
Wild Rose...love your owls!
kc, cute squirrel too! Be sure to check out a thread over on the wildlife forum for squirrels & chipmunks!

This was so cool...a Tufted Titmouse eating a wooly worm!
The female hummer didn't drive off any males, they ate at another feeder, we just had females and sometimes an immature male, but not any full grown males. But she defended that feeder, she would sit on the wire above the feeder and watch and if she saw another hummer going in for a drink, she dive bombed them, it was interesting to watch.
Duc... that BCNH is fantastic! So is the Grebe!
Nanny... Nice job capturing the Titmouse eating a Wooly Worm! Wouldn't think that would taste too good though!
kc8tbq... Really nice shot of the Goldfinch!
kc8tbg, Nice ones of the Hummers and Goldfinch!
Dave, All so nice! Love the Junco too.
Duc, Congrats on the new bird. I love Nuthatches, I have a male and female here everyday. Good ones of the Heron and Grebe!
Nanny, Nice pics. Love the Bluebirds!
Thanks everyone, I tried taking pictures of the hummers, but everytime I got the camera focused on them, zoom, they were gone!!! My husband has the patience to take pics of them, but I never could. Going to try again this summer to have them eat out of my hand, if I can do that I will be eternally happy!
Congrats Duc on the new bird!
Burd, love the new "feeder". I think nuthatch in general are fun to watch dig down in things to find a seed.
KC, bluebirds likely won't come to your seed feeders. They are more likely to eat insects during the warm months. You can order mealworms for them and see if you have any takers. Head over to one of Dave's bluebird threads for more information.
KC, yes Red is right, you can trap and remove house sparrows, but if you live in a community that has them, it seems like you'd be fighting a losing battle. Plus, let's not forget the rules of this forum (no discussions of harming birds). It's an issue around which one must dance. So instead, let's send you to the Sialis site. Ton of info on bluebirds there. http://sialis.org/hosp.htm
Nanny, great catch on the titmouse/worm.
Resin, I posted more photos of my grebe in Bird I.D.
Kc, that's one smart female hummer you have. Your husband got cute photos. It's nice when you both like photographing birds.
VA, that owl is gorgeous. Wow!
I got this picture a few days ago. This Brewer's Blackbird was leaping down to the feeder.
Wow, I blinked and y'all filled up half a thread!
Duc, amazing photos. I just LOVE that grebe shot. I find them hard to photograph and that is such a pretty shot.
Dave, amazing action shots.
VA_Wild_Rose, beautiful series. I love seeing owls even though they tend to be a bad omen for me. Maybe the thrill of seeing an owl is nature's way of making up for the bad thing that's about to happen. Might be bad luck to dwell on it!
Nanny, that golden-crowned kinglet is spectacular!
Resin, loved looking for the starlings. Great start. That squacco heron is great too. Looks like a lot like a green heron.
Kc8btq, had my first two goldfinches of the winter yesterday! Didn't get a good photo and they have their winter colors now, but I was excited to see them. Wish they would stay here for the summer when they have those pretty colors.
Burd, GREAT nuthatches. Love those birds.
I think this is the best picture that I've ever taken of an Eastern Phoebe.
Good response re the bluebirds vs the HOSP, Mrs. Ed. One cannot consider hosting bluebirds without first considering HOSP control.. Plenty of info on the Sialis site about traps as well. kc, if you still have specific questions, contact me by D-mail.
Beautiful fall day here in eastern Virginia. I lined my camera up so that a brilliant red maple was in the background. This is the result.
