wow, nice black squirrel.

Yah, there are a few different kinds of nut rollers. some are cylindrical with plastic nubs, most are some sort of wire contraption.

I got the Nut wizard. LOL. funny name.

Edited to say, just google "nut gatherer" or similar.

Nifty idea... I wonder if it would even get some of the sprouted acorns and pull them up as you rolled over them... ?

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

i think that would depend on how far into the ground the roots have found their way!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

yes we have a Nut Wizard , Money well spent !!! Its wonderful.

DH said he saw an almost black squirrel ,I have not,they are starting to show up more around here .The fox squirrels were mating week or so ago it was soo funny,I didnt see it happen ,but watched them try and try ,poor guy was very persistant..We used to have a hollow dead tree that mom raised babies in for 3 years,then the tree fell over = {

LOL, my FIL says it's amazing how quickly they send that little tap root shooting way into the ground! He took at least 6 of those big (60 gallon, I think?) yard waste cans full of acorns to the curb again last fall. They have a couple of BIG oaks in their yard!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

whoa, that's a lot of acorns. boy, he should package them up and sell them as squirrel and bird food.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL, you'd think he could find a farmer or a hunter to take them... nobody wants to pick them up but the city, though, and he's not going to try to drive a (literal) ton of acorns out to the country for somebody.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

that's too bad. I'm in a rural area. Some farm on the way to the next city has squirrel corn for sale, a buck a bag (about 5 ears). That's a steal compared to going to the store for it. I buy some when I'm out of what I have from our family farm.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

We go and pick up corn after they have already picked it,also we clean up spilled corn from loading the trucks in the fields.Mark and Tom say take all we want off the ground...That works for me. Im glad we have a great nut sorce of our own, well not when Im picking walnuts up !!! What birds could eat an acorn or would they be cracked ??? But yes such a waste of acorns

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I've seen crows carrying around hickory nuts from the tree next door.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I think crows are smart enough to know about dropping nuts on rocks... seems to me I read something recently about crows dropping black walnuts (I think -- I remember it was a really tough nut) onto an interstate, just before a truck passed.

I have one of those spiral wire feeders shaped like a corn cob, and I have a bag of corn cobs to use in it... but the squirrels (and birds for that matter) could care less... they want sunflower and peanuts!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

we hang ears of corn from a wire with a screw, just off the ground so they have to sit on their hind legs to reach the cob, racoon's have not found it yet !!! Its fun too watch .Id like to make 1 of those gallon glass jug feeder where the squirrel has to get inside to eat.Have not seen 1 in a while.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

that's a good idea! I'd thought of tying, never thought of using a screw. Thanks!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

We use a screw with an eye,to run the wire through, and it hangs from the shepards hook. The DH s idea,he can be rather handy .. ; )

Our pecan didn't make this year and neither did the Oak. So I will have to watch my flower bulbs and seeds. Usually I have acorns galore in my fish pond and have to empty the skimmer constantly. The squirrels here don't eat them unless that is the only thing available. I wish they would, they make a mess in the bottom of the pond.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

eek i can imagine (pond) My neighbor has a locust tree with pods. I have to clean those out of the pond.

for what it is worth, that screw thing is exactly what a store-bougth thing would be like. I have one of these squirrel go rounds. I didn't put it up this year though.

We had one of those a couple years back. Those little suckers learned how to sit in the center and turn it to where the corn was above them. I haven't seen it in a while, we dismantled it and it is hiding in the shop somewhere I suppose.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

the bolt that goes into the post broke off when I took it down in the summer (it's the hammock post), and I never got it put back up. Our squirrels would grab some corn from it, then go sit on top of the post. Pretty cute. It was nice because I didn't have to replace the cobs every day or every other day. But this one I use now. I like it because the birds find it easy to use.

That is nice. You could put it on a pole with a baffle to keep the squirrels from getting to it. I would much rather feed the birds.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

So glad you showed that Marna, would have never thought,I have lots of cob corn..Going to get a peanut feeder maybe today .Friends have a cobs a twirlling its funny..love seeing them sitting up eating.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I baffle a bunch of feeders Shelia, but the corn is mainly for the squirrels to keep them from wreaking havoc on the feeders they CAN get to. Most of the time it keeps them happy and therefore my plan works. Still, it's nice to see a bird eating some of the SQUIRREL food (payback). ha.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

We fed the squirrels for several years, but one year they were destroying my garden and pots that I had set out for swaps, etc. We started trapping them and relocated 21 in just two weeks. So I don't encourage them anymore. Plus now with two dogs that hate squirrels they would be in grave danger to dine here now days.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Yes we too are always trying to out Baffle the Squirrels , I cant move the The feeder they are using, frozen fast, only 1 out of 7 that jumps from the stump to the feeder.Come Spring he will be on a diet. Im going to hang some corn cobs over there ,maybe he will stay off the feeder a bit ?? Maybe today I will get me a peanut feeder,if the roads are passable today??? We are still under a level 1,emergency vehicles only ??? We will see .

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Thanks GG...just ordered it!!

huggergirl......come up to my house to see ice!! lol You must be in southern Indiana.

Mount Pleasant Mills, PA(Zone 5a)

We have ice up the ice!!

Cannot even get to the feeders so they had better not eat them empty before we get the storm tonight--more ice and sleet, snow and rain. Yippee! But perhaps I can get some traction underfoot after fresh mess!

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Mrs_Ed,

Love that corn cob feeder! Here, it might just be ignored...
The squirrels and birds here are spoiled...LOL
I make a mixture of peanuts, sunflower "hearts" and cracked corn. They all eat the peanuts 1st, then the sunflower hearts and only if there is nothing else do they even bother with the cracked corn. The only birds who aren't that finicky are the Mourning Doves...HA!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Sorry wont take your ICE !!!! that is awful stuff ,our last Ice storm was bad 2yrs ago..Sounds like we are in for more stuff for several days,Ill keep my boots on .. LOL

Was hoping to go to Warsaw today 20 minits west,to Big R wanted a peanut feeder an peanuts,I know if I stay home it wont get bad,if I go it will get bad...spose to start snowing here shortly 2inches,hard and fast..We will see

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

Well it snowed another 4 inches, didnt get that pnut feeder yet !!! Not that I wont drive in snow ,its the other Idiots that fly on snow an ice covered Duel lane highways, that keep me from going...If I can live without it ,I can wait for dry roads.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Ha. funny Susan! I have a new fly-through feeder and I'm wondering how many hummingbirds will check out the red copula on top.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)
