WHAT'S IN FULL COLOR IN YOUR WORLD NOW? OCT-DEC 2010

What is in full bloom/color in your yard now? Help me build our bloom database by sharing what you feel is at it's peak right now.
Pictures are not necessary, but are always very much enjoyed. Snipets of other people's gardens are always a joy, and what a wonderful way to discover new plants that you simply MUST have!

I am really really late in starting this thread as I have been buried with putting the several yards we tend to bed, and because the holidays are probably going to have me in the same position, I decided that I would lump the next couple of months into a single thread. Although things have slowed significantly with the rain and the cold, there is still quite a bit of color here and there, and the plants that strut their stuff with fall color are really starting to become apparent.

I finally found a place for my toadlily that I can keep the slugs off of it, and I am enjoying it's dainty flowers right now. As it is planted right outside my back door, it is one of the areas in my yard that I still sort of see (by porchlight) this time of year as I am now commuting dark to dark.

I still have some scragly looking roses blooming, and several of my reblooming daylilies are fighting to make a show in the wet and cold. The hardy fuchsias are all still very pretty, and as of at least a week and a half ago, the fall asters were in full color. The Autumn joy sedums are still pretty spectacular as well.

gorgeous fall colors willow!

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Willow, your colors are beautiful! I am amazed at your snowball tree... mine doesn't get much color to it at all. It is in a relatively shaded area, so that may be the reason.

What a glorious Sunday we had! Not only were we able to dig/transplant daylilies and plant bulbs in a sunbeam, but I was actually able to get out in the yard for some pictures in the daylight as well.

I love the japanese maples in all seasons, but the fall color is just to die for. The one that I have in my shadiest area is just starting to show off now....

My Arnold's Promise witchhazel and my smoke tree make a pretty combo... AP will be nicer in a week or so, but not sure if I will have a chance to photo it then...

I have a couple of gorgeous stands of cyclamen now (thanks Pony, Pixy, and Azorina!)... this is the last to bloom and it is so pretty right now.

I just love the color of this new maple by my big pond. This is it's first year with me and it has been a beauty all year. I would have varieties of these trees everywhere if they weren't so darn spendy!

I think that it was Bonehead that was asking about a native that looked like a red twig dogwood only taller (I could be wrong cause I have enough trouble remembering what I had for dinner last night, more less who was talking about something last spring....) and I said that I had something similar behind my big pond. I love the color that it turns in the fall... a nice contrast to the cottonwood and maples around them.

Rarejem, yes it was me, and that does look quite similar to my own volunteer. I went down to our pond last weekend, the colors are about the same, nicely contrasting against all the golds. I am going to assume it is a native dogwood of some type and keep it free of undesireables (blackberries at the top of the list). I also have a lot of young hawthorns spouting up here and there, but unfortunately I think they are an invasive non-native rather than our own. Might have to limit their welcome.

Here's Cyclamen hedefolium which I moved here in the spring.

Rudbeckia 'Black Beauty' will not stop either.

Nice stuff AnalogDog. Aren't the fuchsia's great this time of the year? It always seems like it takes them forever to get going, but it is such a treat to have such pretty blooms this late in the season.

Some people hate maple trees in the fall because they make such a mess. I love them... I love the color of the downed leaves on a fall day, and the leaves make wonderful mulch. The dogs were having a blast playing rough and tumble through the unraked leaves in my fairy garden area. It was like watching little kids toss leaves in the air. Then it was rest time, and I thought that Phoenix looked beautiful in the glowing leaves with what is left of my burning bush color behind her...

Beautiful pic of Phoenix!

***smiles happily like a proud momma*** Thanks Bea! She is well suited to fall colors...

Gastonia, NC(Zone 7b)

she surely is! and a lucky dog she is too.

I always kind of feel kale is kind of cheating, as an example of fall color, but this is pretty nice, and I couldn't resist its photogenic allure! ..... from my tour with Gwendalou of bits of Whidbey, yesterday:

I think that kale qualifies perfectly for fall color! That is a beautiful clump!

I have tried to grow it from seed and always get these wierd spindly looking things that don't resemble the store bought kale at all, so I have given up and just buy it for my planter boxes each fall. I love the splash of color, and love the fact that if I can keep the slugs off of it and the weather doesn't get too terrible that it will last all winter! I bought some kohlrabi to add to the planter boxes this fall too... am hoping that they are similar enough to the cabbages that they will make a nice addition and last for at least a while.

Good morning everyone.

Beautiful fall pictures. Love the picture of your "guard beasts" on the other thread, Julie.

Kyla, you need to come check out this neck of the woods where Julie, Sharon, and I live.
It is paradise.

I have been working on pruning the laceleaf maple again. I really like the look of it now. Finally got the nerve to do as I've wanted.

The Magnolia is ready to give a big shudder and lose all those leaves.

And the laceleaf maple from the other side. I put all the leaves I striped off under the tree and the dogs are facsinated with them. They get right in there and pee. ^_^

Gorgeous fall pictures everyone. I love finding the tiny pockets of bloom still going on among the fallen leaves. This is probably the last Dianthus bloom of the season harmonizing beautifully with Heuchera 'Ring of Fire' (snagged at the last roundup).

This pelargonium has bright magenta blooms (just about to open up another set in this picture), but it's the contrast of the sulphur yellow leaves and black mondo grass that I like - and with our mild fall so far it's persisting well into the season.

Love these crocosmia seed pods - they seem to hold the same orange as the blossoms.

Nice to see the 'Ring of Fire' showing off its color. Looks very happy. That heuchera is a great one for fall.

Oh, well I must have you to thank for mine then - I love it!

Willow, I love the reflection pictre! Also like the red carpet that your leaves make under the maple.... beautiful.

Kymm, That hecheura is gorgeous! Good snag! I can't wait to see how it matures for you.

I have SOOOO enjoyed seeing my new garden with the additions from roundup as well. Julia, you have me all excited for springtime to try to divide some of my hecheuras as well!

Bonehead, that is a great picture of the thimbleberry. Isn't it fun to see that color that Mother Nature has put out there for us to enjoy without having to tend it?

Everett, WA(Zone 8a)

I still haven't had any frost, though I expected it 10 days ago (a few miles from the water).

Petunias, marigolds and a Knockout rose are still in color. Even a neighbor's traditional rose put out two more bloooms!

The zinnias don't like the cool - they are fading and blown over, but not going to seed very fast.

Sun breaks today! Oh boy!

My earlier post is not here. I bet I forgot to hit the send button. Darn!
Yes, Kym I'm sure that ways in the bunch that I brought. Love those plants! Looking forward to treating myself to some of the new ones like 'Root Beer' and 'Cherry Cola'

Julie, me too. I keep eyeing mine to see what is going to go under the knife around mid march. I hope we have a better spring, warmer.

I sure have enjoyed all the pitures.
