Hi Rachel!
That is Clermontia lindseyana. A Listed Endangered Lobeliad from the Kilauea Rainforest.
The Hawaiian name is 'Oha Wai, meaning, water sprout.
Tropical Garden #84
That is an awsome plant, there Dave. I sure hope it multiplys and gets off the endangered list.
Rachel I sure wanted to got see the Lucas family and their rain forest before I get too old to drive LOL
I keep telling my sister That I am coming down there, but havn't done it yet.
Rita, gorgeous hibiscus bloom, what is its name? Can't wait to see your clerodenrums open up.
Is birds Nest an Aroid? I think I want to get me one.
I saw one at Lowes for 5 dollars. I think I will go back and get one. The little tiny rex begonia i got a couple weeks ago has lost its leaves. the soil is still real wet. Today I pulled it all out and repotted it. I hope that works, cuz I really want it to grow.
mjs,
I wouldn't. Almost lost mine last year and I'm further S.
What a buy.....I paid 9 bucks at Lowes several years ago.
Hap
Ok Hap,
I moved it to a larger pot, and it can live in the Greenhouse if we get that cold. Will it sulk in temps lower than 50?
Do you know the dirge of Dies Irae?
Not good.
Hap
LOL...no I don't , but I'll heed the warning ! So it leads a pampered life. That's ok too.
That is the dirge for burying the dead, ( a psalm that was played at the funerals at our Catholic Masses eons ago.) and that's probably what that will be. Guess should not be that so real.
Hap
ERGO....bring it in!
The Alocasia amazonica "Poly" (the "poly" is short for "polyploid") can die back to the tuber but should come back again, provided it hasn't got too cold. In a warm climate it will keep leaves throughout the year but still seems to have static periods and periods of growth. Drying out can make it lose its leaves, again watering should bring them back.
Debra, remember, there's Bird's Nest ferns and Bird's Nest anthuriums. They both look superficially similar, hence the same name.
Well, I think I'll keep "Polly' in a pot thru this winter then, and bring it if we get a big chill. Next year I'll put it in the ground and then mulch the bejabber's out of it if we get cold. There's two in the pot, looks like it would be easy enough to divide later on too.
thank you for the input....( course it's all your (yours) fault (s) for showing me all these neat tropical's ............ ;-)
Mine is a new momma, it has some babies now.. :D
It stays on the shaded porch thru summer, and in the pink bedroom with south light in the winter. ( my "Poly")
rain rain rain, how the heck am I supposed to show you all the brugs that are flushing?
Well Deb it is clear and heavy enough to catch these big fish so why not hold up my vines.. It has done me well I use it for everything but not fishing have allergies to fish.
James
Gordon have you been playing with photoshop again ? LOL
Rachel, I don't mind dormant as long as it comes back, which is why I'll wait till spring to put in the ground but have a backup in a pot just in case.
Debra, I wish we were getting some of your rain....Central Florida is very dry....I'm having to water alot !
I've been tapping my fingers waiting for that one bud on Brug Milk N Honey.
This time last year my brugs were hung low with huge blooms. So far, only one sad little bloom.
I guess the extreme temps of the winter and then extreme hot this summer gave them a scare.
Since Rita has been off this forum for a few day's, I would say that she is probably having a wonderful time in Belize. If so, have a temendous time while there and we will be begging for pictures when you come back.
GordonHawk, nice bloom on your Aristolochia. Is it 'Brasiliensis'?
Debra, your firespike plant (Odontonema) looks like the one Rita sent me a while back. I am looking forward to seeing a bloom from mine.
mjs, wishing you all the best with your Alocasia poly.
Rachel
, do you have to bring your Firespike in up there ? I've got the red and purple, they are both hardy here. I had the purple in just about full sun tho and I don't think it likes it so I've moved it to a part sun/shade area. I hope I get better blooms on it this year.
Debra,
All my (3) Brugs froze to the ground last year except Milk N Honey which is in a pot, but we kept it in a cool barn over the winter, so they did get a dormant period. I think it was just too hot and dry this summer, Hot is not unusual, Dry is very unusual. Everything is so spread out I can't get to it all to water all the time either.
Looks like Plumeria pudica.

I don't think is a plumie. It looks like one I had until a couple of weeks ago when my lawn man mowed it down.
Hap
Dave, we crossed posted. You're right of course, it's the mind of mine I have trouble with.
