I've been using charcoal and a reversed vacume hose, with some bricks. works good for the alum. but not so good for the steel(nails).
retired, living self sufficently in Alabama (Part 2)
I worked at a shop in Mo where I got to play with a mill, loved it! Gonna try to build a Gingery mill with my castings, Bruce Metzger has got a good book on home smelters.
I wish I was back in my place so I did'nt have to concern myself with neighbers. They dont care much for my blacksmithing or smelting!
chancemft
LOL kewl, never thought of usein a vac/blower hose for that. very interesting very kewl idea also. good luck on your mill and castings. yeah i love being out here in no mans land .. nothing better.
Thanks Sailer, I'll try to take some picks of some of the things I cast and blacksmith, and post'm on here.
Looking forward to your pics.

Beautiful here today. 50ish and no wind to speak of. Worked in long sleeves. Hope it lasts. Sure does my muscles good.
Here is my SFG beds. I have now got the 3rd and final layer of pavers on both beds. I need to get them filled now and they will be ready for spring planting. Still need to finish filling the wooden half barrel and the plastic half barrel. I will use them to grow my sugar snap peas and my yard long beans on tepees. I was going to use 3 oples on each tepee but was reading the peas can be grown just 2" apart so I will put more poles, 6 or possibly 8, in the pea barrel and 3 in the bean barrel. Tomatoes will go in the smaller containers and eggplant in the 2 bales. The plastic barrel is the white blob in the right foreground of the pic. Sorry the pic is not better. It was taken well after dark.
I have a lot of free un assembled Snow Men at my house if anybody wants them.

Cold out this morning and I woke up with awful muscle spasms all over. The ones in the left side of my back are the worst.

We got down to 17 the other night, busted a lot of city watermains, they still havent got'em all fixed yet.
Where are we going to find a "warm" place in the sun ??
Well we are suposed to be back in the 70's by Monday, and they said the cold weather for us will be just a bad memory!
I want to come there.
Come on, but it wont be long it will be in the 100's.
Now ya talking .. my kinda weather
sailer, have you found the off the grid site on facebook yet?
Seems we all need what we do not have, maybe we should all be thankful 4 what we do?
after reading all of your posts i'm thankful i'm in Fl. although i've seen more ice here in the last 5 years than the previous 45.
im thankful for what i have ... i just like fuss'n about it .. LOL
yeah yeah .. rub it in flsusie ...
sorry sailor but i just can't help but enjoy one of the few days we getdown here that you can be outside and be comfortable. most of the time it's hot and humid except for when a cold front moves through, then it's cold and blowing 30 mph out of the north for 3 days. then it goes right back to hot and humid. we have very few nice days. those idiots in washington who want to raise the retirement age need to come down here and spend a day working on a roof or asphalt and see if they think they can do that till they're 70. i'm betting they can't make it past noon.
LOL you got that right ... they need to rethink things alittle
Chancemft,
I have your un assembled snowmen stored in 50 gal. barrels
Dont think he would survive very long down here with the weather being so nice. But I heard it's suposed to change again.
try ebay n crags list LOL
