Cajun,
will do, still alot of work to be done on it, but every lil bit i do puts it that much closer to bein finished ;-D>
retired, living self sufficently in Alabama (Part 2)
It really is a cool project. If I lived in my own house instead of a parsonage, I'd love to have that kind of thing.
rained today so i worked on the generator mount for the windmill, got it ready to bolt on an mount the generator, changed pulleys on the windmill also .. went from a 2.5 in to a 6 in. .. with 6 on the rotor and a 1 in. pulley on the generator gives me a 6 to 1 ratio .. more rpm's more amps output .. LOL
You gonna have more electric than you can store!
Sailer, sounds like you maybe need to run some wires all the way to your neighbors, and then you can charge them for the electricity!
Wish I could figure out a way to charge batteries using our windmill. It is a big Aeromotor, and has been pumping sweet fresh water from 150 ft down, for 35 years.
Today was a great sunny day, (about 50 degrees) and I spaded a couple rows so I can plant peas tomorrow, if it doesn't rain. We have had a hard freeze, so the ground is really 'fluffy'. I turned up lots of earthworms, so that is a good sign.
Cajun,
i'd love to make more power than i could store or use, that would be total freedom on running what i wanted when i wanted instead of having to keep an eye on my useage.
Caliche,
LOL Thistledome Power Co. hahaaa i'd give it to my nabors which would be my Bro. my Mom an my Aunt, an a couple of my kids ..
also that big Aeromotor would crank a generator an charge batterys with no problem at all, my windmill is a wood/iron version of the Aeromotor windmill. because its a tried an proven standard for old fashion windmills .. they may not spin as fast as the new designs but they sure crank out some serious torque.
Hey Freejust checking in.No utilities in these parts.Cell phone sporadic @ best ie.poor weather, hollows etc.Tell all I'm alive and well.
Wooooo Hooooooo way to go EOM .. glad to hear from ya .. an glad everything is goin ok
Hey EOM! I know about the hollers and no reception.
it has been a busy busy week, im hope'n if it dont rain to raise my windmill monday, its all ready ... then hook it an crank out some power, an cross one more project off the list and move on to the next ..
Do you have a generator on it?
yep, generator mounted and ready, just gotta stop rainin where i can get it up now
I'm glad I found this place, seems like a lot of info on alot of stuff I want to know about. Love the water wheel! I built a decrative wheel for a guys restraunt a few years back. Maybe it's time to make the real deal. Bought a place outside Crofton, Ky, no electric or water, or anything for that matter. Except an old camp trailor and a few apple trees and grape vine I planted. Lots of deer, turkeys, and rabbits by the tons. Hope to build a small cabin and get it set up so I can someday be there full time.
Chancemft,
sounds like a good plan, gotta start somewhere .. good luck also
Great pics F-S. I look forward to putting one together myself. I've seen the blades also made out of 4" pvc pipe cut into 1/4's, seemed yo work pretty good. is that a car alt.? My dad told me about my grandfather using a car alt on his windmill to produce enough electric for him and my granma to listen to the radio, that was back when they were in their early years(no electric on their place). Anyway, I think it's pretty cool how you put yours together. Is that a tree off your place that you milled down for a post?
Hey Chance, where abouts in Ky is that?
Lookin' great sailer! Is it all salvaged parts? Is it hooked into your existing battery bank?
Are those blades OSB? Will that stand up outdoors?
chancemft,
yeah i cut it off the hillside .. made a 5x7 outta it with my chainsaw .. LOL
Cajun, made from new parts that i just had layin around for such purposes .. and right now its wired into a battery bank of its own for testing. once thats finished ill wire it into my my big bank of batterys.
VORTREKER,
yeah kinda like osb. but its Masonite siding rated for outdoor use, the other side is finished an sealed with factory primer coat, it'll get painted before long.. i have some carbon graphite material .. but i dint wanna cut it not knowin for sure if the design would work like i wanted.
cajun- its about 30 miles north of Ft. Campbell, we bought it because we needed a place for the horses when we PCS'd there from Tx. Then after spending some time on the place, I fell in love with the remoteness. It's old reclaim, and no-one within miles, I love it.
Sailor- did you use an alaskin? Got one from a buddy, realy like it. Takes some setting up, but beats cutting freesaw'd. Still like it alot
A rough draft sounds like a fine idea. That angle iron looks like bed rails. We use them for lots of stuff.
What kind of batteries do you use and where do you keep them? I saw a couple who were on solar power with a small wind turbine for extra power
and they kept their bank of batteries in one of those big plastic bins you buy that look like a little shed you put on your deck. They had excavated into the hillside, built their house in it and put the dirt back on 3 sides. The front of the house was big sliding glass doors and the roof was metal. Their panels were on the roof which was almost flat and it was a metal roof. They lived on a mountaintop in NE TN.
You are in way west Ky. We are in way east Ky. What kind of horses do you have and how many?
Got Mo. Foxtrotters, and I'm down to 3, lost my old mare last fall. Sure hated that! She was a bay mare , and I would breed her to my black stud, and seems they always threw buckskins, gonna miss that! You guys get a lot of snow and ice yet?
Hey Sailor, I have a genarater that has a busted crank in the motor, do you think a guy could hook up windmill blades and produce any thing with that, or would the rpms be to low? same thing for a water wheel? gotta use it for something and dont want to buy a new crank or motor.
We have had a lot of snow and ice but thank the Lord we have not lost power this winter. The last few days have been nice.
We have 9 horses. All but 2 are racking horses. Never rode a MFT but hear they are nice. Ours are TWH, TWH/RMH X, KMP/Standardbred X ,
TWH/Percheron X, mini and a racking pony. The draft X is a WTC horse and the mini pulls my cart. I will be breaking the racking pony to ride in a few months.
Sailor, what is your weather like the last few days? Ours has been really nice but we are supposed to get rain. I worked on my garden today. You looking to plant anytime soon?
Cajun, that sure sounds like a lot of mouths to feed! I like the foxtrotters because they do it all. some of the origionals that I rode were from some realy strong walking horse lines. Most of my stock goes back to Zane grey, midnight sun breeding.
we have been in the 70's for the last two weeks down here so I've got all my cool weather stuff planted and all my warm weather already going inside the house in pots. Cant wait to get them in the dirt!
My horses are still there in Ky, I plan on coming up as soon as the weather warms up, up there. The little camp trailor I got on my place aint known for retaining heat, so I'm gonna wait a little bit. Gonna work on my cabin, and see some buddies redeploying from afganastan. Build a big fire, drink a cold beer, and play music untile our fingers bleed.
Chancemft,
so far all my wood has been free sawed, but i have a portable sawmill in the works, still gettin parts togather to finish it up.
really depends on what size generator it is and what size engine it had on it. but you can get some power from one, doubt it'll be the 120 volts. still useable if you rectify it into dc an charge batterys with it.
Cajun,
i use 12 deep cycle batterys at 115 amps each. they are in an enclosure in the corner of my kitchen (well ventilated to the outside, an my power panel with all my meters an such are above the enclosure on the cabin wall.
and the weather has been awsome up untill this mornin, started raining .. but its bringin WIND with it also .. 20 mph with higher gust for two days an one nite before settling down again, good test weather for the windmill hehee
Would those be the same kind of batteries in a car or are golf cart batteries different? I have heard people use golf cart batteries.
Speaking of windmills, a friend of mine was having problems with ground moles in his garden so he made some windmills and put in his garden on sticks and the vibrations got rid of the ground moles.
more like golf cart batteries, but 12 volts instead of 6 volts .. golf cart batteries is the way to go tho.. thats what im goin to when i replace mine ...
yeah, windmills will keep moles out of your gardens for sure
Those little wind mills work real good for keeping the groung squirells out of our garden down here also. would probably work for deer and rabbits as well.
Sailer, its and olderTroy built, had a 12 horse B&S on it. To get dc out of it I could just come straight of the winding wires that come out of the case right?get rid of the 110 plugs?
Sorry , I forgot to say the size gen. I believe its an 8500/ 7500
chancemft
the output off the windings are still ac voltage, you'd have to use a bridge retifier to convert it to dc if you were gonna charge batterys with it.... all the gen's put out ac usualy 120 volts at 3600 rpm. some of the onans put out 120 at 1800 ..
Thanks Sailer, I dont know alot about the electric stuff, so the info realy helps. Getting any of the tornados down there?
Hey Sailer, meant to ask you, do you do any blacksmithing? I started a new thread under the artist area for blacksmithing. I make about anything, welding and bllacksmithing, and even some casting with alum. Tried to do a little smelting with a bunch of nails that came out of about a billion pallets that we've burnt. That didnt turn out so well, but I'm looking forward to trying it again with a few modifications.
actualy im a machinist by trade .. so ive done some of bout everything you can do with metal at one time or the other .. always wanted to try casting tho .. maybe something i can do when i kinda get caught up here with my other projects ... LOL
another iron in the fire .. LOL pun intended .. heheee
