My boyfriend in Tennessee was standing outside and saw this fly limping on the ground.
It had maybe 6 legs (he could only see 5 though), white (or silver) and black stripes on the body.
It looks a lot like a fly, except it was about the size of a camel spider (much larger than an average dragonfly).
It wasn't furry like a bee, but it looks like it has some sort of "wasp-like" stinger.
Any help??
CLOSED: Huge "Fly"... what kind is it?
This is a cicada (Hemiptera/Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadidae); likely in the genus Tibicen. Their immature stages live underground, feeding on sap from roots of trees, the mature nymphs burrow out of the ground before transforming into the adult stage. See http://tinyurl.com/29z2q5o for more information.
