It's sun. Don't want a tree like the 100ft. white pines that used to be there as electrical wires and driveway are next to area. I was thinking dogwood for further up under large oak trees since they are nice understory trees right? Also would have liked a crabapple tree but those winter moth caterpillars would probably wreck it every year like my apple tree out back. Has never bloomed because of them and the gypsy moths when they are booming. Do you know if these also attack redbuds?
What are you working on??
Don't know....didn't realize the caterpillars were such a problem, either....I would go with a variegated dogwood, but a purple-leafed redbud is nice, too......
Okay put rain gear on and got a pic of the area. The road is to the right, neighbors house at the top and to the right. Woods to the left. This pic is facing north.
The nasty things are pretty bad in my area. Really like the oaks, apple and choke cherries. Not to mention roses. They are almost as bad as the gypsies used to be. I hope they have a few years of decline like the gypsies have had recently.
Oh, I like the area....how about a Carolina Silverbell?
i have about 10 variety of redbud and no issues with catapillars - some of my dogwoods (kousa) are in full sum - a variegated one would need some shade.
love the forest pansy red bud and there is a new one called merlot that is supposed to hold its purple colored leaf longer.
that is a lot of space i would go for both and more :) that's just me. for a shadier area the tri-colored beech is outstanding in the spring.
what is going on across the street with the hoops?
That is not the street, that's the driveway. There are grapes growing on the hoops. Here is a pic. The street is in the back of this view. The hoops are over a drainage ditch, held up by metal steaks so one end can be lifted off without disturbing the vines for cleaning. This was the summer project for DH I designed and did most of the heavy looking on and supervising. ^_^
I will have to look up that new Redbud and the Carolina Silverbells tree.
what no huge wooden arbor for the grapes (and a project for the hubby) :) that looks pretty good - what kind of grapes?
i think you will only find the merlot RB on line - RB's grow fast so should not be a big deal - i think rarefind and fairweather have them - did not look at avant although they might!
i will have to look up that silverbells myself.
carolina silverbells sounds like a great spring tree in bloom - does not put on a show in the fall - neither does a redbud
There are three red and three white, all table grapes. He wanted something to hide the ditch a bit. It will be a war to see who gets more grapes, us or the critters. Three deer down there last night. The families are out and about now.
I do want something that will grow at least moderately fast so I can enjoy it before I get too feeble. Saw a weeping Redbud when browsing for Merlot called Ruby Falls that sounds nice too although not sure it would be large enough. I could get a few and make a grove though right? Something with three season appeal would be ideal. Anyone have a Golden Chain Tree? This is going to be a fun winter project researching and planning for this space. It will probably come from local nursery so will have to be readily available too.

DH is redoing the kitchen floor. Kitchen is a mess til he's done.
The mess will be worth when it's done, but I feel for you about the process. What type of floor?
i just got ruby falls pat - still had color in its leaves will be interesting to see how it holds color next year - do not think a weeper will get large although i saw a covey rb at briggs that was 10'+, staked and trimmed to keep it getting taller
Just went through that mess in Aug. Jumper, but the new floor looks great....does not show the dirt like my old one & with 8 paws in & out every minute, that's important......
Spent the day digging up an old blueberry bush, planted 2 more new ones. Then removed half of the sod in between the b.berry bushes and moved a 12 year old lilac tree to a spot down back. It was threatening my blueberries so it had to go!
Going to try to finish up my planting tomorrow.
Enlarged the L shaped bed on the side of my house, so now it will no longer be an L
This was from 2 years ago, shaded spot is where I'm going to fill in....then all the rest of the grass will come out and that will lead to the walkway area to the gate and then the rock garden area.
I'm hoping to finally plant the first FW order tomorrow. More coming this week, along with three JM's from Davidsan.
peel and stick vinyl floor. it looks like wood, which is in the rest of the house.

Hope to wash the upstairs windows now that the rain has ended.....
i have nothing left to plant except bulbs - might have to do something about that :)
I love those cork floors, they are so easy on the feet. The kitchen at our old church had them
I'll start a new thread.
