Dany's MGs 2010 part 5

Pretoria, South Africa

Dany,

Your Benkei is stunning! I just love the bright fuchsia of the flowers against the yellow-green of the leaves. Beautiful....

Quote from dany12 :

Question:
Heavently Blue is the wild tricolor we can find in Mexico?

Hi Dany,

Short answer: not exactly

Long hypothetical answer: As a cultivar descended from Mexico's wild Ipomoea tricolor, I would strongly suppose that Heavenly Blue is not identical to its parent down to the last molecule. It would be fun to compare the various tricolor cultivars and their parent, though, to see how differences in color, pattern, size, earliness and profuseness of bloom compare on a molecular or genetic level.

I seem to recall that Clarke's Heavenly Blue was selected/bred for its early-to-bloom characteristic, and I've heard there were a few other versions of HB.

For newbies reading this, other cultivars of Ipomoea tricolor include: Pearly Gates, Flying Saucers, Blue Star and Wedding Bells. I don't know if the 'real' Summer Skies has been found and grown out again. Does anyone know if there was a red cultivar of this species? There was another I can't remember right now...one called Darling?

It might be helpful to google Darold Decker, who bred some of the cultivars we know today.

For me, cultivars of Ipomoea tricolor have not had the rust problems in leaves that make such a mess of the Japanese MGs (especially I. nil), and they seem to bloom in walls of color for longer, than the nils.

I apologize, but this is just from memory, experience and books - I don't have links or references.

I agree with Elsa about Benkei - worth every effort to grow

I agree about the Benkei! Beautiful color of blooms and those yellow-green leaves really set it off nicely.

Dany - Your photo of Heavenly Blue looks like the darker blue of mine. Are yours from Mexico?

You've got some really lovely vines and blooms again this year, Dany!

First flower of 'First Frost' mid September!
I always say that the vines with yellow leaves are slower to develop but this point it is a record.

The double purpurea may be a solution for the production of flowers without seeds.
In fact only hand pollination induce production of any seeds.

Oh Dany, I just love your sense of humor and display. Really, the yellow flowers are that small? LOL oh dear. All this time was expecting large ones. Is that a H Blue behind it? I love that big huge blue bloom.
