WESTERN STATES HUMMINGBIRDS VOL. 12

Bajamar, Mexico

Here's another shot of the feeding frenzy. You can see some red throats here too.

Love seeing the feeding frenzy. Hopefully Resin, Burd or Ducbucin will chime in soon with some answers.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

your area gets:

Black-chinned
Anna's
Costa's
Rufous

With others near by.

So judging by the numbers you're getting, I'm still going with the Anna's

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Happy to hear you're seeing so many hummers Deep. I'm with Mrs. Ed. Some of our Anna's migrate to Mexico in the fall (the older ones sometimes stay here year round)and judging from the gorget colors, these are male and female Anna's.

Thanks for the wonderful link to the rescued hummer. I loved it!

Bajamar, Mexico

Thanks Mrs Ed, ducbucln. The more I see these guys the more I think that they are the Anna's. We have hummer all year round, but I'm not sure if it's the same group, or different migratory waves. I'll pay more attention this year.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Deep, I don't get the Costa's here, but when you see them, you'll see the deeper purple color of the gorget (under the bill) and be able to distinguish them from the Anna's.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I saw a costas down in Cabo… it was a female though. But boy could it catch a bug!

Marlton, NJ

There is a Rufous Hummingbird that was just captured and banded in a north coastal New Jersey town.

By the way, congratulations to duc for the winning bird picture on DG's photo contest!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Thank you moutain girl.

I've been saving some Anna's photos for those missing their hummers.

Fantastic, duc. The first one is a real stunner.

An Anna's Hummingbird has been sighted in central Illinois, and someone posted this link for keeping feeders warm.

Some great ideas to keep the feeders from freezing-thanks Mrs. Ed.

Duc, Are your hummers still around?

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

It's a new year, sorry I missed your last question Pelle. I'm off to a pretty good start for hummers this year. There are 6 Anna's and 1 Rufous that just arrived two days ago.

Here's my older Anna's that spent the winter with us-he's continuing to fight off the other hummers from his feeder.

This young Anna's was showing off for my camera, but she let me get up close.

We had three different snowfalls in the past couple weeks and I had to keep the snow and ice off of the feeder ports which I'm certain the birds appreciated.

There are plenty of feeding ports on our two feeders, but this one kept cutting in to get a drink from one already in use.

This hummer had just chased off another one.

Not very sharp, but this one was already trying to get nectar from the Forsythia buds.

Last one for today, one of my adult male Anna's.

Wonderful shots duc! I love those Anna's!

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

I've found the hummers love the flowing vines on my fence so I'm just letting continue to grow.

They are so sweet Duc, I can't wait to greet mine.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

How wonderful that you get to enjoy these little jewel friends for an extended season! Gorgeous photo Duc.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Thank you all. I do hope you'll be seeing your Ruby-throated very soon!

Meanwhile out west, this male sure was defending his feeder, but returned to this vine each time where I took over 200 photos of him.

This is his "attitude" stance.

He's telling someone to get away here.

Unfortunately a couple bees found this feeder.

Thumbnail by ducbucln

This one didn't pay any attention to the bee.

Lovely shots Duc! Love the "get away" one!
