Please share your favorite pics of the day. If you want to revisit the wonderful photos on the last thread, we came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1119354/

A juvi male Orchard Oriole.

And a female...

My last one. I'm so envious when y'all get those wonderful photos of colorful birds among pretty flowers or berries. I can't seem to get one of those! I keep trying though. A pair of female Orchard Orioles were enjoying the crepe myrtle flowers, but this is the best I could do.

Well, I said that was my last one, but I forgot about this Black-bellied Whistling Duck shot. Really, this is my last one.

Elphaba - thanks for the new thread. I liked all your pics, but to me its a toss up for "best pic" between the Orchard Oriole in your crepe myrtle flowers and the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks. Nice.

Great shots on this and the last thread everyone! Nice start to this thread Elphaba! The BBWD shot is very nice!
Hack, great job on the Hummer's!!
Margaret, you can throw away 100 picture's but that shot of the Osprey is wonderful! And great flight catch of the stilts!
Duc, all your shots are very sharp and clear! You do an excellent job! Wonderful variety you have all year round.
Everyone else I seen your shots and they are just as nice!!
Hard to keep up with the daily but love catching up when I get a chance. You never know what your going to see.

Marlton, NJ

Wonderful shots Elphaba! We have the Whistling Ducks in Cape May right now.

Thanks for starting the new thread!

PERTH, Australia

Elphaba, you've done better than you give yourself credit for. The Oriole in the crepe Myrtle is beautiful as is the photo of the Black-bellied Whistling Ducks.

Thanks for your comments, Burd.

Y'all are too kind. That first one looked OK on my computer but is pretty grainy here -- OK in thumbnail though -- haha!

Want to hear what's making me just sick? I was visiting my folks in South Dakota. We had lunch and walked up the trail to Roughlock Falls in Spearfish Canyon. As we were leaving, my mom pointed to the Iron Creek trailhead and said remember when we hiked up there and couldn't find the way down and ended up wading through the creek? OK, the day I left SD, a friend emails me about a mega-rarity in the Black Hills. An Orange-billed Nightingale Thrush is hanging out in Spearfish Canyon at the Iron Creek Trail. It's only been seen in the US 4X. I was right there and I missed it!

If it's any consolation, from what I've read, it's a very difficult bird to catch up with - it is only singing before about 7 a.m., and is almost impossible to spot in the dense foliage even when it is singing, let alone when it isn't. See http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/SODK.html for more info.

Nice start Elph. DO those ducks really whistle?

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Their call is described as a whistle and I guess that's the best way to describe it. They are a nervous bird and they sound panicked all the time. There were four of them on the roof of that thing. I took two pics and then they all whistled and flew off in a total panic.

Resin, that does make me feel better. My Mom sent me a local newspaper article about it and it said that it was the loudest bird in the canyon. Made me crazy thinking it would be easy to find. They even showed birders on the trail and I recognized the spot.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

On the last thread-Margaret great photo of your stilts.
Lily, I would have missed that egret if you hadn't mentioned it. What a pretty view you have.
Burn, nice one of the crows and kingbird.

Elphaba, thanks for a wonderful start. Love the orioles, especially with the Crepe Myrtle (looks like it has a juvie mouth-I'm seeing lots of those). The ducks sure are cute too! Love those colorful bills. So sorry you missed your rare sighting. The bad thing is that when it's announced in the paper, everyone goes looking for it and you probably wouldn't have had a chance.

We took our dogs for a walk along the lake and found this juvie Ash-throated Flycatcher (least I think this is what it is).

Also found a pair of Black-crowned Night Herons chasing each other around.

Thumbnail by ducbucln
Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

This year we're seeing a larger amount of Green Herons everywhere we go.

Thumbnail by ducbucln
Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

I'm guessing this adult is reprimanding the juvenile.

Another one.

A juvenile Green Heron.

Thumbnail by ducbucln
Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

The juveniles seemed to be everywhere along this inlet off the lake.

In this same area we checked the osprey nest and sure enough, an adult and a juvie. I was looking for our Acorn Woodpeckers that reside in the snag below the nest, but I only found a few.

Thumbnail by ducbucln
Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

I had to really lighten this shot of the juvie as it was in the shade of another tree.

Great photos duc. Love the action shots!

I finally got the adult male. I think it is a family unit. I've never had orioles in the summer before. I usually only see them when they migrate through, so this is a real treat.

Thumbnail by Elphaba

One more. When the other birds land on the flag iris, they bend/break the leaves. It's amazing these orioles can land on them without hurting them at all.

Nice job duc! Good seeing the Green Herons and Black-crowned Night Herons!

Beautiful Oriole Elphaba!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Greta start Elphaba.... the the Whistling Ducks ahot is very nice and those last 2 orioles shots are great too! I keep hoping to see some Orchard Orioles.

Duc...your herons are beautiful!

I spotted this Carolina Wren in the brush collecting nesting material!!

Wish it hadn't been so shaded there!

Elphaba that male is beautiful! I love his colors.

Nanny, that's a cute wren. Hope you'll soon be seeing the little ones.

I found my first (for the year) Cedar Waxwing at a nearby park the other day.

Elphaba, Thanks for the new thread. Love seeing the Orchard Oriole, and the Whistling ducks.
Duc, wish I could see what you see on that lake, love the herons.
Nanny, cute little Wren. Hope to see one someday.
Resin, nice picture of the Grey Heron.

I had a few visitors this week, A Nuthatch came to investigate my feeders, and then a Hawk flew over, but was not ready for either of them. Then this afternoon, I think I saw a falcon pass over my house, no pic again. And then some Night Hawks were chasing after bugs, Got some shots, some ok, and some bad. They are as fast, as the Swallows in flight. Most of them were far.

Nice birdies everyone.

Elphaba I like those oriole shots. I only have a few shots of the juvenile Baltimore Oriole in not the best light.

Ducbucln nice shots, especially the California Thrasher; great light on it.

Here's a couple of the White-eyed Vireo

Nice Grey Heron Resin!

Duc, Good shots. Love the Grosbeak, Herons and Thrasher!

Burn, Nice ones of the Night Hawk!!

Met, Great job on the Vireo!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Love that Grey Heron Resin.

Met, wonderful shots of the white-eyed vireo. That's a tough one for me to get.

Burn, really cool night hawk shots.

Duc, love the bill on that thrasher. That photo really shows it off.

Nanny, those Carolina Wrens are tricky huh? I have one of a juvi. He's kind of hidden too, and not the best photo, but I kind of like it. You may have given me the confidence to share it anyway.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Not the best pic, but I kind of like it. Two young Carolina wrens were digging about in these dried up lotus leaves. I only got this one photo of one of them.
