The seeds these beauties grew from, were kindly given to me by a very sweet friend & generous Dave's gardener..Kyle Courtney. If not for Kyle I would be without these treasured little beauties and my collection would still be close to a standstill. They have only started to bloom for me from late last year(our summer)onwards. All were under a year old but would have bloomed much sooner had I potted them into bigger pots much earlier that I did and had they been in full sun...for many months they only had a few hours sun per day.. I think Kyle mentioned somewhere that he has had Oleanders bloom at app 6 months....If you want them to bloom in the shortest time possible,my advice would be,and I am no expert by any means, give them all day sun/heat and good rich soil with plenty of moisture.
My special treasured seedlings
I have numbered the best that have bloomed for me.There are 6 so far that are all different, many of the others are similar so I have not included them...I still have lots that haven't as yet bloomed. I now have 4 single yellows that to my untrained eye look identical,so I have numbered them as #2
I have used the old double white in this pic for shade/colour comparison...
Your seedlings look beautiful. Your yellows look very interesting. Have you done much with red?
Mickey
In what way do you mean, seed or cuttings? No red seedlings as yet but I have propagated cuttings of a single red I have here.
brical,
Who did you contact for seeds from Europe? Do you know if they have doubles? How long did it take you to get them to flower from seed?
What do you do with all the extra plants? I'm hoping that I can get some people interested in trading here in Phoenix.
What way do you use to root your cuttings.
I finally got going with my coral vines. Wow they seem to grow like a snail. I ended up buying two plants at the nursery. The seedlings I have are pretty small. I have about one of two the have grown a bit more.
We finally got a oleander forum and now no one is here...
Mickey
Mickey, Las Vegas is here. I will pass the word to some of the California gardeners I know. They probably just did not see the announcement. AND, they have not seen the new colors. Type oleanders into Google. The first site has marvelous photos of many multi colored oleanders. I want them all now. I have a whole greenbelt I can fill up with them and see everyday on my walks.
WormsLovSharon,
I hate the thought of growing any from seed but I love some of the colors that brical has.
I can't wait to try she closed soda bottle method to root cuttings too. I think there isn't much more time this year to be rooting. I'll be going away for a few weeks and can't have any around then. Too much for the house sitter to take care of.
I'm taking my clippers with me for sure!!!
I hope to get to see the oleander gardens in Houston too if we have time.
I bought Apple Blossum and Sunset this year. There is another one I bought from the same place but the name slips my mind.
Mickey
Mickey,Galveston is the home of Oleanders in the U.S...If I lived over there I would be checking it out..that's where you'll find a lot of the beautiful varieties.
brical1,
Galveston is going to be so hot when we are going to be there, I can just hear the DH crying over the heat. Does any one know of a nursery that has one gallon pots for sale. I think we would have to bring them into the hotel every night so they don't cook.
I really want to see the famous Moody gardens.
Mickey
That is beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome Sharon :0)
Have any seed pods laying around I can pay postage for????? All the cutting our friend sent me I killed. I thought I knew what I was doing because my hibiscus cuttings did well but I murdered the oleanders. We are in the mid 70s. How about you?
Sharon.
I can send you some... but I don't have any seeds from the yellows as yet .Don't worry about postage. D mail me your addy.
Bridal,
Hi I have a beautiful double yellow. I just got it last year as a baby and it has grown enough for me to take a few cuttings. You will be first on my list for seeds!
Mickey
As of yet I have never gotten any seed pods from my double yellow oleander. I have seed pods of a double pink. I need to check on it tomorrow to see what is going on with it/
Mickey
It's very sad that there is not action here on the oleander site. I hope we start to see some action here.
MickeyAZ
It's sadder than you think, Mickey. I believe that Judy (brical1) had her garden flooded during the Queensland floods of Jan 2011 and she hasn't posted to the Australian Gardening forum since. (Although I believe soon after the floods she did contact some member/s privately to say that her garden had been flooded but she was personally OK.) She had a superb garden, including those lovely oleanders whose photos are seen above.
It's late autumn now here in Australia but the cutting of the single yellow oleander that Judy gave me flowered for the first time this summer. Here's a photo of it in flower taken in January, but it's still flowering now.
Thar is so sad about Judy's garden. She had such beautiful oleanders. Mother Nature really got mad at the world in 2011.
Sharon
