Coffee Break # 42 Can we add some ice to that coffee??

Rehoboth, MA(Zone 5a)

When we lost all the Elms my husband hired some one to get rid of the stumps just not certain how they did it, seems to me they drilled a holes and burned them out with something.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

there is stuff you can get that will burn them out - have it although never used it.

Well, after ten days, my floor is finished, & my fridge & stove came today....I can cook again! However, no dishwasher until the 27th :( Of course, the walls & counters now look shabby.....maybe I can sub & get those done next year.....

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Several decades ago, I learned about "planned obsolescence" used by manufacturing companies/corporations to get a more frequent purchasing pattern in consumers by designing "breakaway" flaws in their products.

I'm still trying to be "spiritual" about the underhanded practice, and not annoyed.

It might take several more decades/centuries before I stop being annoyed....

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

That's totally unethical, not to mention a bad business practice!

Edit: Gone are the days of, 'making the best product you can, selling it the lowest price you can, while paying your workers the highest wages you can.'

Yes, it is very sad. The standards that made the USA so great, are now eroding.

I think a large part of it has to do with the pride of a family name on an item a century ago, is now an anonymous, faceless mega-corporation.

Jeepers, I could write an entire book on this subject if I felt like typing....but then I would bore everyone to tears !

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

You knew it was just a matter of time.

Quote from pixie62560 :

THE FOUR STAGES OF LIFE:

1) You believe in Santa Claus.
2) You don't believe in Santa Claus.
3) You are Santa Claus..
4) You look like Santa Claus.

SUCCESS:

At age 4 success is . . . . Not piddling in your pants.
At age 12 success is . . . Having friends.
At age 17 success is . . Having a driver's license.
At age 35 success is . . . ..having money.
At age 50 success is . . . Having money..
At age 70 success is . .. . Having a drivers license.
At age 75 success is . ... . Having friends.
At age 80 success is . . .. Not piddling in your pants.

Pass this on to someone who could use a laugh.

Always remember to forget the troubles that pass your way;
BUT NEVER forget the blessings that come each day.

Have a wonderful day with many *smiles*

Dear Pixie I correspond with Santa every month and methinks he will be a tad disgruntled about this Santa Claus crack. I will just tell him you were only foolin cuz it's not a good idea to get on his naughty list.

My fridge was 20 years old, still working, but losing the seal, & running night & day....this one is much quieter, & hopefully, will save on electricity.

Well here's a shock - scientists are disputing the government claim that 3/4 of the oil in the gulf is gone. They say most of it is still there - deep. About 80%.

East Bridgewater, MA

It's difficult to understand why the oil isn't on the surface.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Crude is heavier than refined oil.

Cake Mixes & Toxins- **PLEASE READ** Pass this on to ALL in your address book. You never know whose life you may save by doing so. For those of you at work, PLEASE remember to check your cupboards when you get home tonight!!!

This is confirmed on Snopes http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/pancake.asp

A student at HBHS (high school) had pancakes this week and it almost became fatal. His Mom (registered nurse) made him pancakes, dropped him off at school and headed to play tennis. She never takes her cell phone on the court but did this time and her son called to say he was having trouble breathing. She told him to go to the nurse immediately and proceeded to call school and alert the nurse. The nurse called the paramedics and they were there in 3 minutes and worked on the boy all the way to the hospital. He came so close to dying. Evidently this is more common then I ever knew. Check the expiration dates on packages like pancakes and cake mixes that have yeast which over time develop spores. Apparently, the mold that forms in old mixes can be toxic! Throw away ALL OUTDATED pancake mix, brownie mixes, Bisquick, cake & cookie mixes, etc., you have in your home.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks Pixie, mine says 03/25/10 it has enough for a 3" dia pancake, time to buy more pancake mix anyway... (Might as well get some sausages too, lol!)

Hi Everybody! I'm sorry I've been out of the loop. I'm limiting my computer time because I can't seem to get anything done when It's on. I haven't read up on what is happening. I hope all are well and happy.

I have been doing a few drawings, working in different media. Here's my first watercolor (under instruction). A turnip, an apple and a pear.

good enough to eat (except for the turnip)' Try winter squash.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

nice Harper!!!... they just get better and better

East Bridgewater, MA

Sofonisba----beautiful art, Vermeer would love the shadowing...the fruit looks luscious, the turnip can fall back onto the turnip truck (not a big fan of underground veggies, unless McDonalds can turn them into unhealthy fried thingies).

Pixie----thanks for the info, a lot of us keep baking mix materials around long after expiry dates.

Victor----I remember reading a long time ago that crude oil was "harvested" off the surface of water by Native Americans for various uses, and later by pioneers. The term "sweet water" became commonplace for water free of sulfur, oil, and other toxic substances.

I guess, like a lot of americans, my basis of info on crude is linked to that bastion of scientific knowledge, "The Beverly Hillbillies."

(Let's all sing along: "...and then one day he was shootin' at some food, when up through the ground came a bubblin' crude........oil that is.....Texas tea...").

beautiful harper - make that three votes to return the turnup :)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Excellent work Harper!!!!! Your abscense from DG has been missed but obviously your time has been put to good use!!!!!!!!!! If I was your teacher, you'd get an A for the rest of the year. ^_^
BTW...i'll eat the turnip! LOL

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wow - really nice, Harp! Are you taking a class now or waiting until fall? Maybe we can meet at the Botanical Garden in the fall.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I like mashed turnips...good job....that apple looks soooo real

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Just back form the library with the kids. Right in the front there is this guy on the computer checking out women on one of the online dating sites! Ridiculous.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

How LUVLY Sofonisba but I also veto the turnip.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I like turnips. I think the detail is most impressive on the pear.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Very nice work, I like the turnip & the pear most & their shadows.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Thanks everyone! No one has to eat anything shown. It's just a drawing. I have eaten a turnip only once and it wasn't too bad. However, I really liked the purple color in it! That's interesting, though, to see your reactions based on whether you liked or disliked the object drawn.

Victor, Today I finished an intermediate pen and ink class. This weekend I go back for a 'drawing trees' class. Then I don't have anything scheduled, but want to take a few classes in late October. We'll see if I have the funds. Meeting you would be nice!

Thomaston, CT

Hey, Harper...glad you've posted....been wondering how you've been.....I'm very impressed with the apple....in my opinion they are the hardest to paint....I usually stay away from the red ones! Even my teacher contends they are difficult, & she usually says, "Piece of cake."

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Harp - you're always welcome to come here and paint/sketch. Fall is a great time.

Thomaston, CT

Only Harper? LOL

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

ooooh wonderful I saw on the news that if you take a photo with a gps enabled device... someone can get your location if you post it online

My sister lives in a condo with the garages underneath.....they don't lock, since they are all connected, so she locks her car (Acura) every night. Two days ago, when she went to get her car, windows, sunroof, & compartment were all open....she needs a remote to get into her car, & was told by the dealership, all remotes are different....she thinks someone broke in using a cell phone...she keeps no money in the car, so nothing was taken.

East Bridgewater, MA

Nothing taken, but still frightening....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes it is
