2010 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds Vol.6

Macon County, IL(Zone 5b)

I need air traffic control! They are defending the food sources crazily. Each day I can tell which feeder is the favorite, because it is empty. The window feeder is paying out finally. The cat sits on the window sill right in front and the birds still feed. I scared the cat off trying to hurry and put batteries in the camera. Needless to say, no picture yet.

Marlton, NJ

Rose I'm so glad you saw him. I've had a mature male here for 4 days guarding the feeder and honeysuckle.

This little juvie male is aggravating the adult male to no end!!

Lady, you can stare all you want, but I am NOT leaving this feeding station unguarded. No way, no how!

Too funny, I watched this little cutie for the longest time and took a ton of pictures. I even got to witness the hummer catch a bug right in front of me and then hunting another! Very cool watching the bird track the bug and then bam! In this pic the hummer spotted some rivals and was getting ready to zoom out and give them words. Got some nice video too.

Oh those are cute...and good!

One sits in our river birch to guard the front feeders. I was to get some decent shots of him...considering I was inside shooting thru the window!

Watching intently.....

Ditto!

Agreed, mine are still here and very actively enjoying the nectars in the garden as well as the feeder. But no photos. :(( Great job on your capture everyone.

It's been crazy over here also.. Going through a gallon or better every day now.. We installed a new window over the kitchen sink a couple weeks ago. Looked like a good place to hang another feeder... At least it's easy to to get and refill.. Just slide the screen open and grab it... I forgot to shut the screen the other morning and those little jokers were flying into the kitchen..

Oops, didn't realize it was so big. Now, I see that I forgot to re-size them.

Cute photo Uncle Green! Looks like you've got a popular spot to stop and eat.

Hack, glad you're seeing a pair!

Thanks, Lily and duc. I just came across this particular thread and am not going to try of comment on all the great shots, BUT I was amazed to see the pics of the many, many hummers at a single feeder. Mine do not like to share.

In fact, it appears that my hummers are down-right unfriendly to another hummer at the feeder. Mine tend to "dive-bomb" each other.

Is group feeding a common, or a rare sight?

I don't get groups here very often maybe 3 ....but during fall migration a couple of times I have had swarms.
