Dawn, Sorry, Centralia. They are pretty close together. I think. But neither are near me. Maybe 4 or 500 miles. So, I don't think you would have to worry about snow. Not much anyway. I still would wait until your sister has gone thru a winter and let her tell you.
Yes, it is rough leaving family. Take it from me. Don't move from the grandbabies. You miss their growing up. Put up with the weather. Go stand under the sprinkler. LOL
A rain barrel is good if you have a big expanse of a roof and of course rain. I have mine on my deck which is almost 10 feet higher than the garden I have them watering. Therefore, I put hoses on them and gravity flow pulls the water down. I don't have to work other than to move the hoses to other plants.
Now if I can just get Bob to leave the spigots open or at least tell me when the barrels are full. LOL
Plant propagation part XVIII based on my own experience
I would just have to fill barrels with a hose. lol You get so much water, I can't imagine why you would need rain barrels though.
What is the story with your grandkids. They live elsewhere? You moved or they moved? If it is not too personal. I know I would be depressed and feel like I abandoned my kids too. My dad as well. I really wish I could get them all to leave but as long as their dad is alive, they would not consider it, I sincerely doubt. I will take your advise under serious consideration. The granddaughters are only going to be 2 and are 18 days apart. My heart skips a beat when I think about them.
I think we are all married. You guys listen to me like my DH. I SAID, get a couple of rain barrels and when you are not using your hose, place your hose in the rain barrel and fill it with the slow moving water and then fill the next. Then you can use some of that water to irrigate when the spigot is turned on and a hose hooked up to the rain barrel. If you played it right you could probably leave the hose in the rain barrel the majority of the time. I do know you do not get rain.
And No, JB is not wishing fore hurricanes.
Dave, I do not think the B-12 is going to help here. I am going to get them all Prozac. JB has the right idea. A cocktail. But Dave you do have so much energy. I think it comes from loving what you are doing. I do not ever get tired unless I stop. As long as I keep going, I can go forever. But if i sit down, I am done. But I am on drugs for depression and anxiety. When I came down with depression, it took my doctor over a year to diagnose what I had. Over a two year period of time I did no gardening, cooking, and did numerous things I thought were normal that were totally out of whack. My DH told everyone that someone had given me a lobotomy.
Dawn, you will be miserable away from your children and grandchildren. We will work on your landscape and you will get happier. I have many ideas that are not expensive.
Mary, a HOA is a Home Owners Association.
Evelyn, I have about 100 extra cannas so I think I can get a couple sent your way.
Tomorrow I am planting some irises and redoing two hanging baskets. One is DH's hanging basket and he is going to help me. That is a good sign. He ask me if I could have anything for my birthday, what would it be. I told him, for him to get up earlier and not lose half of the day being in bed. Well he has been up everyday at 9:30am. That is much better than noon. His job at the Nevada Test Site required he get up every morning at 4am to leave at 5am to get to work on time 1 1/2 hours away by car. The last 35 years of my employment, I could go to work whenever I wished. I usually went in early and stayed late but that was just my style. Because I was the manager, our office was always right around the corner from our home. When we moved, the office moved. But that was only twice.
Have a great Saturday and we shall meet again later. Good night friends.
Good morning all! Hi Sharon! How is you EZ Clone doing? I've convinced 2 friends on the Hibiscus forum to buy one and I will be getting mine around the first of September. We are getting ready to do quite a big Hibs cuttings swap which should be real fun. I also suffer from Depression and anxiety, I am Bi-Polar and have been treated for the past 11 years or so...actually getting diagnosed was the best thing that ever happened to me. It is a hard road even with medication sometimes......I wish you the best and am always around if you ever want to talk.
JB Glad to hear some of your seedlings are surviving...wouldn't be Christmas without you selling trees! The members of the hotties group have long since scattered to the winds....I have just about given up growing Brugs because they are such Divas....I have missed you so much you old rule breaker! LOL, sugar and spice and everything nice JB, I love you! You know, don't know that it will make you feel any better at this point, but Daves Garden has always had a policy about the "slightest" of curse words being used, even when Dave owned it. I guess you just didn't get caught a time or two. During his time it was also against the rules to replace curse words with asterisks or symbols. I'm sorry that you got a scolding letter though, that would make anyone feel badly.....and you are such a sweetheart! I am glad I found you again to say hello my friend.
Hi Karen and all my darling friends who put up with me daily.
I truly am not a vulgar cusser. Not on the internet. I use the little words like the one that holds water; the one that is the opposite of heaven and a female dog when I am cranky and my very favorite is the other word for poop. That is information you really did not need but you got it anyhow.
Yes, I must have slipped thru the cracks but at my age I am not going to loose any sleep over it. This is the real world I live in and yet I do not want to offend anyone by using my favorite words. I will just go someplace else where they understand frustration being described in those words. LOL The letter was a bit of a shock but I realize we all need to go by the rules, so heaven forbid I should want to break them.
Boy those brugs are divas aren't they? Did the gang move to Dave's other list or did they just fade away to other forums of interest?
I would use one of my favorite words today because I am so frustrated. I got up early to get some gardenias transplanted to larger pots and ended up washing the dog, doing laundry and making some food for later. By that time it was lunch time and now I just checked the greenhouse temperature and it is 95 deg. So much for transplanting.
It is a beautiful day with very little wind so we are spraying roundup here today in the field of large Christmas Trees so some of the grass cutting is eliminated. It takes forever to cut those fields and yet we are so fussy about the way the place looks, something has to be done. We have used roundup all over the little field and with this sun it killed all the grass between the rows and it looks great.
I looked up my problem with the Arborvitae turning brown and they said it was normal if the branches were suffering from stress. It should come back with some care and watering etc. I do hope so, they are just beautiful trees.
I am a great tree fan and if I ever did anything else other than tropicals, I think it would be with trees. Of course, since I am going to be 82 this month I would never live long enough to see most trees mature. So, that idea wont work. LOL
I think I will go see if I can survive the heat for a short time just to get at least some of these plants done. Love you all. Hugs from the old cusser.
LOL, cusser did my hummer get there? Bet he took care of that praying mantis!!
Sharon, I know what you meant about Dawn putting the hose in the rain barrel, but if she were going to water the plants, why not do it with the hose instead of the rain barrel? Dawn, do you water from your pressure tank or directly from the well? Everything I do goes thru the pressure tank and if I get it too low it gets air in it and makes a mess of the water until we get it all out.
I use a rain barrel because if I don't the rain water goes down and washes soil etc away. So, by using the rain barrels I can direct the water where I want it. On the plants.
Dawn, you asked about my grandson, 1 and only. When he was 6 yo we moved over here to the other side of the state because my mom was here. 84 yrs old, my dad had passed away. She had her own house and would never think of leaving it. Well, she died 2 yrs later. I am still here. When I bought this place, A fairly large A frame and 40 acres, I got a good buy, but had no intentions of living here permanently. Well things didn't work out that way and my grandson is now 21 yrs old, and we are not close any more like we were when he was younger. Very sorry about that.
I think a good dose of vitamin D3 would do wonders for you guys. Have your blood checked for it. Do some research on the net.
JB, I like vulgar cussin' when it is appropriate. Not every other word tho. Gotta mean something.
OH, JB!! It looks like my Aimee is going to bloom. If she does I will take a picture and post it. I have got to move her tho. She is not getting enough to eat on the other deck. I fertilize a lot on my livingroom deck because, you all guessed it, that is where the brugs are and the are gobblers of fertilizer. Found a 4 inch bud on one the other day so guess it is paying off. Will have to move Aimee out here.
JB, you will outlive any tree you could possibly plant. I believe that. If not, you could always look UP : ) to it. LOL Just teasing. You would always have to look down to it.
This is Westerland
You guys are right, being women, I know you know alienation from your family is not how we were wired for happiness.
Some men could love that, my h would be happy as a clam, I think.
We may bid on a house behind us and over one, for an investment. I doubt we will get it but what the heck. We only have a week to do our homework. So it is scary, but we would be crazy not to try...Our little money we do have, is no longer making us interest on our CD, so we may as well have a tax write off and make some money in case. We will never be able to retire if we don't cash in while it is possible to do it. I wish we could buy the one behind us and the one next to it. At least we can try. We won't bit a lot but nobody has put an offer on it, so we may be able to get it, if God wants it to be, it will.
Thanks I appreciate your ideas Sharon. I really feel like my yard can be nicer, if I get some boulders and about 10 skips of dg, to start me off. We are putting up a private fence on one side where the neighbors complain, and that will help shade some of that side from the harshest sun since it is open on the west side to the sun, with very little to shade it at present.
I want to build a bridge our of some material that I found on my property, but I need H to help me, it is heavy. I need some T-1-11 siding to put on it first. I should get a rain barrel to put on top of the cargo container, it will be hid from view by 2 huge Mullberry trees and it is actually part of our wall and also a shed, painted to match the house, it is next to the lasagna garden. If I had it, I could store water there, to water if they put us under restrictions and I would have water stored for plants in a disaster, like the immanent earthquake. That way our drinking water and the dogs water is all I would have to worry about. Not losing all of the yard. How big do they come. do they have lids to keep leaves out of them and debris? My grandma had one it looked like a large grey drum and it had a window screen over it with a rock or something to hold it down.
Good evening all!
I have a question regarding SWEET GUM BALLS.
If I used them in my flower beds to deter slugs, do I have to be concern about them seedinf and turning into plants?
I am still yanking out oak tree seedlings. The wicked weather does not seem to deter them, They are occasionaly popping up in the lawn that is never watered.
Love all of you.
MARY
I have the same issue with elm seedlings all over. They root deep too.
All of you are having such a great time I hate to imput my news. But........ here goes-----
The Good Lord decided he just had to have another quilter in his group so he called upon my Mom, gave her Golden Needles and Golden thread and a few fluffly pieces for her to start. He gave her eyesight better than here on earth and so she is teaching her trade with the others. Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes, she is in a much better place, and yes, she does have a garden---Moon garden I think :) Talk to you all a little later in the week. Thanks again. Lee
Here's a fresh thread http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1121521/
It was taking awhile to load the old one.
;)
May God be with you lee as He is with your mother
Lee, what a sweet farewell. I know several quilters that were there waiting there for her.
She is in wonderful company.
I keep their quilts where I see them daily.
My prayers are with you in your loss.
Sidney
Lee,I am so sorry for your loss. Your mom and my mom are probably now best friends. Mother did not quilt but she could knit and croquet like the best. Mother loved to grow vegetables for the whole town. She also was a great fisherman. Still can taste her smoked trout.
A mother is special in our lives. Be sure you know she is still right behind you, looking over your shoulder to make sure you are doing whatever you are doing right. I still think of my mother anytime I make her favorite food or when the irises are in bloom, her favorite flower. You will do the same. Sending some of my angels to comfort you. Love, your friend, Sharon
Oh I don't know you, but I hope to. This is such hard news and Prayers are with you in your grief.
Dawn
So where is Dave today? I had a good day. I cooked smothered fried chicken for my DH with mash potatoes and for myself grilled pork brisket. I had many plans for working outside but did not get there. has started eating so I made sure he had enough to east. Yesterday he was his old self and today he was dizzy.
We had the handyman here last week and he did a bunch of the handyman do list. I keep a list and when it gets worth his while I call him. He changed a bunch of light bulbs to m ore energy efficient and changed out three smoke detectors and changed the batteries in all of the smoke detectors. This afternoon, after cooking for several hours and after i cleaned the kitchen, I went into the bedroom area to take a shower and get cleaned up. My eyes were tired so I laid down on the bed for a minute and quickly fell asleep for about two hours. The first thing I heard a smoke detector beeping, like the battery was dead. I was thinking nasty thoughts about our handyman but then the beeping stopped. I took my shower, did my hair and then came out in the living area and paused the news on the TV. DH came down his man cave upstairs and we started to watch the news. Then the smoke detector started beeping again. Every time DH would pause the TV the beeping would stop. We thought it might be coming from the TV. Then I went into my dressing area to take the rollers out of my hair. The birds were in the fig tree and I opened the door to the poolside patio to scare them out of the tree. Then I heard this bird making the same noise as the smoke alarm.
I came back into the great room area and told my husband I thought there was a bird in the house as I proceeded upstairs. There in the guest bedroom was this bird, sitting on one of the twin beds beeping just like a smoke detector. I opened the french doors that open up to the back upstairs patio. Then I walked back into the room. As soon as I got across the room, our visitor took a fast fly right out the door. My DH has left the back door downstairs open while I was napping so the male dog could go in and out because he will not use the dogie door.
JB, what day is your birthday?
Dawn I am posting three photos for you. I have this plant in numerous places in my landscape. It costs $3.98 a plant and is usually very small. First photo is new plant. Second photo is plant one year old and third photo is 4 years old. I have misplaced the tag but it is a ____ dracendea palm. They do not freeze and love the heat.
Lee, please accept my heartfelt sympathy on the passing of your mother.
Lee, just got on here and read about your mom. So sorry to hear that, but you know I don't think it came as a surprise to you, but it is still a shock. You will always think about her in many ways when small things happen in your life. Seems we always come across things that remind us of our moms.
Take care, and come back when you feel like talking, we will always be here to listen.
I'M bacccckkkk...
sorry everyone ... I do little excursions on weekends. we were visiting my parents at their lake homeabout 50 miles east of us. it was too hot to be outside but my mommy gets upset if I don't visit enough.....

Dave
That link takes me to the top of this one, Mr.
Sharon, I only see one picture, not the subsequent pictures after time passed. I should go look for some then. I need more fast growing trees that are not messy with leaves. After I get my small ones tall, I am chopping down most of these horrid elms. I keep them because they shade the yard on my sunny side, but OOOOOOOWW! how I despise those weeds. I have one Castor plant that took off, this year from seed, and two others that just stay small. I don't know why? Might you guys. The one that took off, is my h's favorite plant. It has so many seed pods that it better be his favorite plant. lol It looks tropical, so I like it and it grew so fast too.
I want to go outside and wack all those things down that I thought were the zinnias that I planted, but they are not, they are some crazy weed, Candelabra plant or something. OMG! one plant last year, made 500 this year. I let the darn things grew because I thought they were the zinnias I planted in late winter. crap. I can't see the forest through the weeds anymore.
if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to see it does it make a sound?
sorry about that here is the correct one ...I think
