Ooh, love your pic Emma. I just went all the way back to 08, Oct and
found Apricot Candy. Thanks to all of you who responded.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you Jackie,

Wow, you are already getting blooms . . .
This is another that doesn't bloom for me until late in the year when the temps start to drop. I have several vines recently started - so I'm getting ready.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Emma, this is my pic from Oct 08.
Last yr something broke the top put of the one I had going and it did not
recover.
I meant to start my last sd but forgot. Kinda afraid to now. Wish I had just
planted it in the floor of my g house, they do better there. lol

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh dear -
And, you only have one seed left?

Go ahead and plant it since it blooms late in the season and I'll send you more for next year. They take off pretty fast, so you will surely get blooms before your first frost.

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Emma, thank you so much. I'll plant it on the fence and see what happens.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Ok, How do you grow almost 700 MG vines ???
Very carefully . . . lol

We have a very deep lot, so I am lucky that I have a large area in the back corner that I call the 'Back 40'. We are presently still working on that area, so you will need to look past the working tools.

I utilize EVERY single area that I can throughout my yard with tomato cages [usually doubled] and other types of stands as well as quite a few Trellises.

I plant vines close together that are 'supposed' to be the same thing and when they are not I tag the vines as they grow, unless I decide to keep them as a mix. The others, I try to space them far enough apart so there won't be too much untangling.

All of my MGs have a number that is labeled at each vine at the bottom on what ever it is growing on with Masking Tape and Permanent Marker - which is the only way to keep up with this many. I have a Master List that has what MG that number is and where the seed came from and any other important information - PLUS, where it is planted in my yard.

The back property will eventually go across the entire back to the other side, with is not being used for anything now and needs some serious cleaning out - so that is a next year job. I have 4 fences in the Back 40, including the Wood Fence with fencing material attached to it. That is the tallest one and is where I am growing most of my HIGEs this year. One fence is 10' or 12' I don't remember which, and the 2 that we put in last year are 5.5' tall. I'm guessing the length is 20 to 25'. More on the Wood Fence.

We ran out of time this year to put up the new rebar that I wanted to do, so instead we are putting up trellises at an angle. There are 4 up right now and more will go up this weekend. The new Trellises are only to accommodate what I already have started that needs to go in the ground now since I am running out of room.

I am only going to post a few photos and will start a Thread when I get all photos taken - which will be in the mornings when I have blooms. These photos I just took so the vines are pretty wilted at this time of day. It is currently 93°F, with a heat index of 100°F. The two days previous the heat index has been 110°F. We start watering as soon as each area is shaded.

This is a photo of my Back 40 where you can see most of the growing area, but not all

You are very welcome Jackie . . .

One more of the Back 40 showing in between two of the fences. In the very back, there are also vines groing on a chain link fence. There is also a double trellis in the back where I grow more of my HIGES

I have several Trellises in this area. The one of the foreground is where I grow my Kanokos
This flower bed is for Dayliles that are not yet planted and are sitting in pots. There are also larger pots with Morning Glories that will soon go on what ever the Black material is called that is thick and the water can seep through. These will be going on the outside part of the Back 40

One more view of this area in the front part where you will see 3 more Trellises. The two on the left is where I grow my Rose Silk/Chocolate Silk MIX, so they are planted quite close together. The Trellis on the right is arched higher as it is over one of the gravel paths.

oh my goodness - can't wait to see your vines flowering Emma :)

If I may compare this forum to a choir, I do love the different voices among us that appreciate this flower in so many different ways. From the humblest pot to the extravaganza so elaborate ya can't see the sky for the morning glories. A wee exaggeration here - but no matter where any of us may stand on that spectrum, we all share a tremendous passion for morning glories (or, if not yet, the enablers among us will eventually getcha going).

What a ho-hum planet if flowers did not rouse an emotional spectrum as rich and intense as ... ? Anyone wanna fill in the blank?

lol

Too Funny Karen -

Oh, BTW, I did get a shot of the sky, but it was 'Straight Up' -
One of those accidents . . . lol

So, here is the Clear Blue Sky in Jacksonville, Texas today

Thumbnail by EmmaGrace
(Zone 7a)

I love skies like that one - especially skies that come with 72*F temps, light breezes, low humidity, preferably following an evening of gentle showers, maybe sprinkling a little earth-friendly fertilizer between 2 and 3 am while gardeners are tucked in their beds, lots of fly-catchers and house wrens and purple martins to clean up the aphids and Japanese beetles before the gardener greets opening morning glories in the morning, and peace on earth and a box of chocolates for Joseph.

Edited to say that this post is a variation of "A Gardener's Prayer" from Karel Capek's book, "The Gardener's Year" and his version was much better than mine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karel_Capek

Emma - Interesting set-up you have around your home. I can picture growing 100-200 vines ... maybe. But not 600-700 on less than a quarter of an acre lot with a home in the middle of it. You'll have to further elaborate on how you are growing that many in such limited space. I can't picture that possibility.

I know Dany has a large piece of property where he grows all his MGs. I am guessing several acres. I don't remember how many he grew last year, but I remember seeing photos and the vines were huge and climbing into each other. He made the comment that he had to grow them further apart this year so he could keep them separated.

Looks like you'll have lots of seeds for trading and sharing!

My previous post above was just edited -

Thanks Becky,

I have grown this many MG vines for the last 3 or 4 years - just not growing as many I. purpureas this year, except for HIGEs. There was one year I grew over 800 vines, but too many were too close together - so I didn't do that again.

I don't know how else to explain other than photos and I do not have a wide angle lense on my camera. The only other option, other than an aerial photo, is to stand on top of my house and take photos - and I don't think so on that one.

Our lot is a little less than 1/3 acre and is a very deep lot. And, as you can see from the photos I have posted so far that it is just about covered with MGs, except for the front yard. Even in the front I have quite a few MGs growing on a lattice porch as well as a few cages here and there.

It is a full time job to take care of this many MGs, but then who said being retired would be easy . . . lol

In the center of this photo, you can see an 18' Bamboo TP with 2 different Moon Vines growing up it. They have now reached the top and are STILL growing. It won't be long before they start climbing across the cable wires.

Ya oughta be fine as long as ya kin out run 'em :)

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Emma, I would be doing the same thing if my DH would just let me have my way. .. I have about 100 vines of all types ( MGS) scattered around the property here, as well as about 15 species plants. I really love them. This am I had the best shot of the huge white ruffle i. nil ever, and of a huge drapy purple/blue/pink bloom in the south corner barrell and the "white with pastels" about to open a good side shot showing dark blue and mauve streaks thru it. I took my camera to work to do employee pictures and downloaded all to the wrong memory stick dang it. Jackie, My apricot candy is going crazy as well as Pumpkin from mg swap and Now it is time to start positioning the new vines that are ready to climb. I really like using tall grasses, and tall wild flowers for their climb, but use the tall bamboo and the tall natural fallen branches everywhere. . I would have room for a couple hundred more if I could use the whole begetable garden, and the whole north south and west fence. But the other plants would be challenged. This five foot area here is on the south fence, and there are more i.nils and i. purps getting going there. They will climb the neighbors shrubs and trees, and I will have to climb a ladder to take pics.

I really have enjoyed all the posts of blooms on the other thread. Thank You and great growing everyone!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Since I have about 36 brugs, I know I could plant about 50 more vines and still have room for 15 more brugs LOL
This shot shows a part of my available growing area, not counting the dog run fences and the alley mg garden I have going. We have a big back yard.

(Zone 7a)

Debra - you and me both - where there's room for one plant, there's room for oodles. I got 150 vines into a very small part of our .17 acre in 2007.

But, Becky, does it really matter? Can't we just all be happy with what we have and happy for each other's gardening happiness, too, while we're at it?

Edited to clarify garbled wording

Thanks Karen, Did I see you mention that sharing seeds back to the giver was a good thing to do? If so, I have some seeds to gather for you.
If you look close you can see two moon vines, five i. purps, one cardinal climber, two specis plants and three i. nils in this little corner. Can't wait to see that tall sunflower covered in Morning glory colour!

(Zone 7a)

Debra, who knew you could decorate sunflowers like Christmas trees in July? I understand there are a couple of mushroom species that glow in the dark in Maryland (not kidding, but anyone interested will have to do the googling). Maybe with enough vines making dark little caves up and down the sunflower stalk, it might be possible to have lights, too :)

Thank you about the seeds-back thing - I'll do the same.

I'm basically comparing Dany's MGs to Emma's growing areas:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7907004

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=7907067

Dany's vines totaled about 470 max. Which is one heck of a lot of vines!

Just making visual comparisons, that's all...

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

That is impressive amount of vines!
