Seed Swap & Chat #58

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

I think this was the pic I wanted to show you before - later on with some of the ruds and some lilies blooming. I think it looks better than the last one. I couldn't find it before because I can't figure out how to organize my files with my software. It's only going to get worse.

I really need to take mine out that spreads so much but it puts out so many blooms and it's such a show I hate to take them out lol I keep trying to deadhead but that's a lot of deadheading and it's just too darn hot with everything else to deadhead. I sure don't want that thang to reseed again and again! But I am taking the deadheaded seeds and pitching them in the field hoping they reseed up there they have all the room they want there. I noticed last night that there may be two plants instead of just one.

I keep planting the yellow gaillardia but keep getting orange in it from the swap I want a solid yellow one! I may have gotten some seeds last year when I ordered seeds I know I got some different ruds but never got them planted but I think I got some of the lemon gaillardias too guess I just didn't run across them when I was planting if I did lol

I'm wondering if next year the one that I have that is well mannered will turn into a monster too but I'm loving it so far the blooms are a bit smaller than the Goblin I like that too.

What is that pink taller flower in the back on the left that looks pretty too! Some kind of malva? The JP beetles love those malvas here I've got the zebrina (?) out front and getting ready to cut them all down all the leaves are so eaten up they look awful! But almost afraid to cut them back afraid they will go to other plants instead, mostly they are staying on the malvas and hibiscus they have already eaten my blooms to the dahlias and cannas! They don't even have a chance to finish a bloom :(

I'm thinking of taking my pots of dahlias and canna to the other side yard where everyone can't see them from the road all they are is just foliage anyway I'm doing away with those this year all together too much trouble saving the bulbs over winter. I may slip a pot of dahlias over on my neighbor's deck and see if they do better over there wouldn't that be a nice surprise for Tammy LOL She gets better sun on her back deck anyway.

What is that yellow type daisy like there in front of your orange lily that’s pretty too they are all very pretty! It really looks nice there Sharon :)

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

I do love the flowers of the cinquefoil. If I had lots of room, I'd find somewhere better to put it, but I'm fairly decided to remove it in the fall or spring. Hope I'm not sorry I let it go to seed this year so I could collect seeds for you guys. Hope they don't pop up all over the place.

I don't have a name for the yellow gaillardia, but it looks similar to this, only definitely yellow, not orangey.

http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/175825/
I'll have some extra seeds of this one too.

The taller pink flower is a malva. I had it somewhere else a couple of years ago, but it didn't return. This one just popped up there on its own. Nothing seems to be bothering it. I just collected some seeds.
The yellow in front of the lily is heliopsis "bressingham doubloon". I collected seeds last year, and will try to collect them again. I also have another heliopsis "asahi" that doesn't show up in the picture.

I know what you mean about too much trouble saving bulbs. My amaryllis from 2 winters ago, which I couldn't start last winter because I let the leaves grow for too long, started themselves this spring. They still have green leaves, but as soon as they die back I'm going to try to trade them away, along with the paperwhite narcissus I grew last winter. They're just too much trouble, and often end up falling over in the end. There's only so much I can deal with.

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Another surprise, Lea. I just found 2 flower stalks of blackberry lily (one open flower) that are sticking up through that mass of flowers in the front yard. Apparently they survived the winter. Hooray!
And found a gone to seed dwarf sweet william-type dianthus, still holding all of its seeds, just waiting for me to collect them.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Love your garden! Very pretty! :)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I just cleaned some more of that zebrina malva out again last night and found a couple more blackberry lilies lol There won’t be room for all of them that I’m finding. Sharon those are going to take room like irises you may not have room for more than one of those mine out back spread out like crazy they don’t just stand straight up they are fans like an iris or my bearded irises anyway :)

Had to go to town yesterday and invested in more grass killer to kill this crab grass that keeps coming up I’ve dug it out about three times in the mini shade garden part that I want to plant in and this rain keeps bringing it out again with this heat I haven’t kept up with it and now it’s going to seed!

I don't think the cinquefoil will pop up all over the place well maybe they will if your beds are really fertile I just have a few to reseed and you can tell them they almost look like the wild strawberry plant if you have those there but they are closer to the ground about three stems of leaves and the are pretty slow growers where I have mine but they aren't in full sun but the ones in pots are in the sun that I'm going to transplant and they are still slow growers :) You shouldn't have any problem I hope they are easy to pull out. That bed, the dirt where mine is pretty decent I’ve been working on it for a while.

I think I'm done planting gaillardia from seeds :) Too many to transplant then most of them turn out the same ones I've been growing them for a few years from seeds now and always seem to get the ones that look like goblin. Now I did have fanfare turn out right and that was one I lost in the middle bed last year from weeds. I even bought a Tizzy and had Burgundy one and lost both of those. Last year was a really bad year for my plants back there :(

I did buy three new gaillardias today I finally found an Orange & Lemons I've been wanting that one forever! Got a Sunburst Yellow that one kind of looks like yours but it doesn't have fluted petals and a Burgundy Picotee this one might be the one I have in the back of the bed I was talking about haven't had time to compare the blooms yet.

Found an Obsidian Heuchera just had to have it somebody stop me! I don't have that much shade Ha!!! I just had to have it :) I bought another one but can't think of the name of it and picked one up with out the label that variegated Brunnera they had those last year and I wanted one so bad I had ordered a few Jack Frost from Ella but they were too late coming in so she had to cancel the order so that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Meredith. Thought I posted, but guess I didn't.

IT'S POURING! HOORAY!!! Finally!

Lea, as far as I'm concerned, blackberry lilies can have as much room as they want! I adore them. Unfortunately, they usually tell me they don't want to be here in my yard. Hope my luck is changing, but mine generally die rather than multiply.

My gaillardia that I think you thought was goblin says Arizona Sun. The other short one is Fanfare, and the red one isn't marked.
I got some oranges & lemons in the piggy swap before last. I only got one seedling, which I planted, and it still hasn't bloomed, so I"m still not sure what it is. Do save us some seeds from your new gaillardias!
Whatever you don't have enough shade for, you can send over here. I have plenty.

Hey everyone, where are y'all? Well I guess you must all be on vacation, sipping pina colladas by the lakefront, and floating around in that deliciously cool water, while Lea, Meredith and I are slaving away in the gardens with the hot sun beating down on us, sweltering in the humidity. Boo hoo!

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

HA! I must have sweated a gallon in twenty minutes this morning, and I was out for about 3 hours! Though a pina colada might be a good plan for tonight!

Blackberry lilies are on my 'do not plant' list! Had them one year, and then more the next all over the place, not just nearby. Then they are extremely hard to dig up too. Guess they just like my yard too much. Still have a couple out there. Of course, when they bloom I have to let them 'cause they are pretty... so then I pay the price if I don't the seeds quickly enough ;)

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh kl, I'm so sorry I left you off the very small list of us struggling swelterers!

I'm jealous of all of you whose yards are loved by blackberry lilies and candy lilies. I just don't know what to do to make them happy. I've managed to hang onto some of my crocosmias, after a few tries, but they're another of my true loves that seem to diminish over the winter rather than multiply.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Me too with the Blackberry lilies, mine have never really multiplyed..wish they would....

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

The blackberry lilies don't like to be wet make sure they stay pretty dry Sharon. I’ve grown them in gal. pots before for a couple of years they bloomed in the pots maybe you can put them in pots they don’t get as big but they still have lots of blooms on them.

Yes! Where is everyone lol I just made a trade get to go out there in 95 degree weather with a heat index of 105 and dig a couple of daylilies lol Naw I'll do it early in the morning but still LOL

I've been outside today off and on trying to clip the crab grass stems of seeds floating around in a few areas bought a gal. jug of weed killer to hit them with tomorrow I just hope it isn't breezy tomorrow like it was today and yesterday the wind is blowing just enough not to spray and I had already gotten all the seed stems cut away a few days ago in my side yard gez! I probably have more out there now! Wish these darn plants would grow as fast as the cotton pickin crab grass!

Ok, I told you all my truck got wrecked I think...the guy that owns the house next door had a front loader in the side of my yard to take a garage apart right by the property line he's getting ready to build another one and tore my yard up a little bit not much (it's easily reparable) after that happened he came over and looked at my truck didn't think much of it...he sent a wrecker to take my truck to fix it! Yeah! Not sure how much they are going to fix but whatever they do is really appreciated :) The next door neighbor just sent his son over the guy had called and said my truck was done :) Can't wait to see how much is fixed on it I won't know until it gets here and where I had it parked in the drive way Tony has his car there now and just took off on his bike without moving his car lol Have no idea if they are bringing it home tonite or when, I need to call that guy and find out so I can get Tony back here incase they bring it tonite I hate for the people with the wrecker to have to wait for Tony to get back from town lol

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

I love BLs ,Iam going to try and start some else where and hope they grow like weeds ......

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks Lea. That's a good idea, to put some of the blackberry lilies in pots. I know I've got some large pots around, so I can keep some in one permanently, if they decide to stay, that is.

Knock on wood, but thankfully it's cooled down some here, and not as muggy. I went down to the community garden today, for the 1st time in a week, and my plot was 50% crabgrass and weeds, so I spent a while clearing it out before the rain started. I actually do have a little room left there, and think I'll use it for perennials I can't fit in my yard, and the seedlings of some daylily crosses I'm planning to start this winter.

I didn't realize that you haven't had a working car since then. Certainly hope it's fixed now. Just don't lend it out again.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Wasn't today a perfect day for gardening... I got a lot done too. :) I got rained on pretty good at the end. I still need to go out and rake up some of the weeds I pulled, but besides that I got my whole front walkway garden edged and mulched. :) And the DL's I just got in the mail yesterday evening, planted too! : )

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Absolutely! Now let's hope for just a few more days like today - at least.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Yes that would be perfect... I still have lots to do! It's been so hot since April that I haven't gotten hardly anything done... I get too dizzy when I work in the heat and I just can't get up in the morning! When I do the mosquitos bother me if I try to any gardening anyway. Now I want to check the forecast to see if it is supposed to stay cooler or not : )

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

I'll second the motion for little water on the BLs. Where they grow for me (without my permission) is basically rock hard clay that only gets rain, and in the summer that's almost nothing here! They have monster roots that just refuse to give up, which I suppose is how they survive the lack of water. Hmmm, maybe I should try drowning them ;-)

Just got home from a movie (Sorcerer's Apprentice, DD liked it...), it's 10:20pm here, and I swear I could break a sweat sitting still outside!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Ha ha that stinks, but I know what you mean.. it was like that here, all last week.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

We're supposed to get down in the low 90's early next week... keeping fingers crossed.

Speaking of mosquitos, has anyone had their yard treated? I see signs all over the place, and pest control companies offering treatments to control mosquitos... sure is tempting. I get tired of spraying all up with deet every morning, and taking 3 showers a day to make sure I don't leave it on when inside, and a little worried about it too. Wonder which is the lesser of two evils...

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I don't only because I'm scared it would harm the butterflies or beneficials. I have a big butterfly garden full of host plants, so I don't want to poison anybody! Just playin it safe : )

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I won't be back until probably Sunday my neighbor is going to use my lap top trying to get a Will made out for her mother passing away if I'm not back by Sunday you'll know it took a little longer :)

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Oh gosh Iam hoping it cools down a bit ,boy this week was awful yesterday was the worst,TG for AC ..all I could manage to do was to drag the hose around to water, and it rained last nite, I dont think much though. The air seems to be not so thick this morning.

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Unfortunately the hot muggies have returned. Just got back from putting in a few hours at the monthly community garden workday. Had to do it because I missed the last 2. It was brutal. Trying to recover in the AC. Unfortunately the street block party is tonight. Hope the weather cools down a bit by then.

Lea, I do hope you have better luck lending out your computer than you did lending your car!

I can't stand putting on bug juice, and hate the idea of pesticides. Too many mosquitos just sends me indoors.

How do I know when it's going to rain? When I have finally gone to the community garden and given my plants a thorough watering, then it will rain. If I don't water because it's supposed to rain, then it will not rain. Watering at the community garden is my rain dance. Now if I can only find a cooler weather dance.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Iam doin the same dance..It did rain a bit last nite not enough to water,so Ive been running 2 hoses since 9:30 am its now 2:30.Its 90 + but windy really windy, made it tollerable to be out for 5 hrs.We got quite alot done. yea...Oh no skeeters too breezy. That was a big plus ,no flies either, and the neibors dont have anymore livestock as of a week thursday.Thank you 4-H livstock auction .They did do well.LOL

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Keep on dancing, huggergirl! We can use all the rain and cool weather dances we can get. Glad you had at least somewhat of a break.
I'm back in the ac after cooking for the block party. That also took some willpower in this heat. (big big pat on the back for myself!) After I cool down a bit, gonna try and venture out for a seed check. I've done enough work for today. Then a nice cool shower. mmmmmmm.......................

guess most of the piggies are still at the beach.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I did use SSS from Avon for the skeeters but here lately just doesn't seem to be working so went back to the Deep Woods yes it stinks but it's better than scratching all night lol I remember when the SSS used to work but now they have mosquito guard so guess they took the good stuff out of the cream I used and put it in that charge for it separately now and it doesn't work they messed a good thing up as far as I'm concerned just to make more money, went over to Tammy's last night and she had the Avon stuff on and kept getting bitten so she used my DW that I brought over with me :) She sells Avon too!

Tammy brought the computer back in good shape Sharon ;P She got everything done while she was sitting in the hospital with her mom and got it notarized from a girl she used to work with. You know I can't say no except to drugs lol

My truck is fixed got it back this morning the guy next door had it fixed for me because he put a hole in my yard with the back hole taking his garage apart it runs good and has lights again on the driver's side and even the mirror that was totaled on the driver's side :) Still has an ugly looking side panel where the lights are on the side but hey a band-aid can cover that think I'll paint one on there LOL May as well have some fun with it can’t do anything about it.

I do have a Celica I don't drive the truck in the summer because it has no air but it's going to my grandson soon as he gets a job and can pay for insurance so I may have it a while I called him this morning and no job yet? No truck lol There’s a good chance I may get to keep it Ha!

Yes will have to do a rain dance and dance for some cool weather here huggergirl so I can get some gardening here doing the soaker hose thang now and then the sprinkler hate to see what my water bill is going to be this time! But really I'm usually watering more beds than just this one so I guess there is something good that came out of last year in losing so many beds to weeds :) I lost three rather large beds and my nectar garden is history until fall then I'll try and get it straighten out and see what I have left...

Sharon when you want it to rain at home go water the community garden would that work? At least half way work :)

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

'Morning! Have to go out and water here. Supposedly have a chance of rain this week... we'll see!

At least I can get out in the early am this week. DD had camp that kept me inside getting her ready and driving her there until 9:30 am all last week. Hated that it killed the mornings... but she loved it!

Starting to get all sorts of seeds! Need to go try to get some poppies today, been putting that one off and now they're all fallen over. Hope there's some left inside, I'd imagine there are!

Have a great day!!!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

IT rained nicley last nite.lots of really great lightning.Too wet to collect seed,Iam really going to work on that ,not doing it haphazardly thats ok for myself ,But I want to trade, soo I ll do good job..

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I finally feel somewhat caught up on planting my seedlings! I got everything planted except some stuff that doesn't have a spot ready yet.... I potted those up into 3" or 5" pots at least They were starting to look very unhappy and leggy in the little starter packs! So I feel pretty good. Now just have to get out and weed, edge and mulch a few more beds and I should be set until late summer early fall tasks. : )

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Funny thing ,I busted my rear getting all that I started planted ,only to pull a good portion of Tithonia and cantaburybells and Holly hock ,I dug up,monster size they were.ARRGG I thought I read 8 inches tall on the tithonia, umm 8foot duhhh,I didnt realize how BIG hollyhock would get..and the cantaburybells just were in the wrong spot.lesson well learned ..LOL

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

huggergirl, I can't believe you pulled canterbury bells I've been trying to grow them for two or three years and the seedlings get a few inches and die on me I used to have really good luck with them but now the last few times it was too wet for them this year and they rotted in the jugs! Did they bloom first??? lol

No way Meredith now you have to come help me!

I just dug two daylilies up out of the mini shade garden so now I can get about three more plants in that spot that have been waiting all year still need to dig about four more of them! I had both of them in between tree roots sure was fun trying to get them out ;)

I'm going back out it's 85 now cool compared to the last two days but I'm sure it will hit the higher 90's this afternoon if not sooner.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Yes they were loaded,I felt bad, still do..i had so much tall stuff shading everything else.I left 2 huge ones a pink and white, had no idea how big they would get,I was just sticking plants everywhere,I swear Iam not going to do that again..

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

It's a good thang I would have to come beat you and I'd get lost driving there LOL If they were blooming that is as tall as they will probably get you are bad!

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Good morning, guys. Finally got caught up on my sleep, though I've missed the morning. Good block party last night, good turnout, lots of good food, though still was muggy and I just can't get away from weeding. Had a tour of a neighbor's yard to show her what were weeds and what weren't and think she would have been happy if we stayed weeding in her yard all night.

Good rain dance, huggergirl. Glad it worked for you.

Lea, glad you got your computer back and truck working. Sure would save money on insurance with just one vehicle. If my rain dance doesn't work, at least it'll make the tomatoes happier.

Congrats, Meredith. I've still got some plants in wintersow jugs and little cells. Was hoping for cooler weather to transplant them, but may have to just do it. Seems like the tropics again today, though I haven't been out yet.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I know perenially me it is like the tropics again! You made me remember i have one more ws jug to plant! I forgot about it because I moved it over to the garden where i wanted to plant it! Thanks : )

Lea lol I'll be right over... it'll only take a few days for me to get there! ha ha : )

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Hey Meredith, I'm much closer than Lea, and can use some help too!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Lol, my husband will kill me if I start spending any more time in the garden instead of cleaning and cooking!! ha ha He already has had to have sandwiches or fend for himself for a week straight!! ha ha He's helpless in the kitchen (or so he likes me to think ;) : )

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Meredith, you'd better start training him soon, while he's still young enough to learn.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Lol : ) He's untrainable! He was a momma's boy and mommy did everything for him... I knew what I was getting into when I married him so I can't complain. : )

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I have a jug of blue balloon flowers to plant yet one bloomed the other day in the jug and is only about three inches high lol Thing is it was blue and thought I had planted white!

I've still got a few parsleys in a jug too and oh yes Meredith I saw a cat on my Queen Anne's Lace a while ago and another big one getting ready to climb the aster out front to go into his cocoon from another QAL :) And a Monarch was laying eggs on my blood flower milkweed out front ;)) Things are looking up now if I would just get more hummers here!

Toofew my cinderella is about to open up a bloom :) It seems like it's taking it forever to open it started last week!

Oh Wind, my iron weed is blooming now I need to get seeds from it because it’s in my middle bed where I’m moving all of my plants from so I can get some going in the side yard :) I know I got that one from you of course it’s been planted for a couple of years.
