Seed Swap & Chat #58

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I've always wanted to visit Denver bring back lots of pictures!

Sharon I said I 'wish' I could send a picture :) Haven't gotten around to figuring out how to send pictures yet :(

Did I tell you I saw that little snake in between my house and garage last night the same little snake I pitched in the back middle bed a while back to get him out of the way of my cat, I have a piece of carpet rolled back and he went under there doesn't seem to be afraid of me tried to look him up last night to see what kind he is but couldn't find a bunch of pictures of snakes for Indiana so frustrating!

I want to keep him soo bad but know he wouldn't get any peace or me with three cats in the house LOL It's so tempting! Maybe he will stay around so I can see him once in a while...I've got one of those kiddie sand boxes that is plastic with the frog head thingie to put on top so I use the bottom part for watering pots in and have expected to see a frog or snake in it with all of this heat and dry spell we've been having but I've never seen him in it but that's where he went in last night under the carpet rolled up right beside it :)

Lebug,Indiana Dnr web site ,Iam pretty sure thats where I went to find out what this guy was.He is a copperbellied water snake and a good 4ft and fat.He lives in our wetlands and came up for a visit with my cat,OMG I saw them face to face inches away, the snake did not strike, well he is not venomus and I knew that already,BUTTT If willie would have grabbed him Iam sure he would have latched on to the cats face

Water snakes are fat and I wonder why that is looks like they would be too heavy to swim lol

One time here my dad and I went fishing and we were there for a while and I was pulling in an artificial worm and looked down and there were a bunch of big fat snakes sunning them selves all around me can't believe I didn't see them when I started throwing my line out at first lol What does dad do but pitch a big rock right in the middle of them while I'm there! They all took off in the water of course lol

What is Dnr just type in Dnr.com? I checked that site out and found another link didn't see any pictures on that one or couldn't find them but from what I see I think it's a baby rat snake and those get at least six foot long I just hope a hawk or something doesn't get it I would love to see him crawling around here when he grows up and hope I get to see him grow up!

Thanks, toofew. The yard has been evolving slowly over many years. It was full of buried coal ash pits, whole sections of over half a foot thick concrete, and buried brick rubble, cobblestones, and lord knows what when I started. I just kept expanding bit by bit, and am finally to the point where I want to make it human friendly, not just plant friendly. It's a tiny yard compared with some of yours, but it's still been a helluva lot of work.

Lea, we're going to have to do something about getting you going with sending pics. I am a big techno-phobe, and though I haven't learned how to sort my pics or get them where I want them, I've still managed to get them into my computer and send them, so I'm sure you can too. Do you have a digital camera?

huggergirl, I would sure love to have more space and get my neighbors and their houses to move at least several hundred feet down the road!

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Here are a few of the ruds that grew from the seeds you guys sent me last winter. Can you identify them?
I especially love this one, and its gone crazy.

Well that's weird. I click send, but DG doesn't seem to want more posts from me. Maybe without pics? Will try again later.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

They may be working on the picture part Sharon they are talking about letting us do four pictures at one time can't see them doing it this soon though since Dave is gone:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1115177/

My camera is a Kodak EasyShare V530 nothing easy about sharing the pictures all they want you to do is buy pictures from them at least that's my take on it all kinds of instruction to print and get the pictures on line guess that their sharing process!

I have colors like those pictures of yours in my Rustic Colors aren't they beautiful! I have the doubles out of it too I found a name for them the other day on the doubles but don't remember where I saw it I'll look for it later tonite to see if I can find it if no one comes up with it :) Rustic Colors have more of the brown in them I think there is a name for the other one too somewhere lol

We are getting strong winds and it's suppose to storm so I need to go out and move some pots around I hope we get more rain than we got in the last two suppose to be storms just enough to change the color of the soil at the top of my pots didn't even storm LOL I need rain! I'm not even sure if it's going to hit here yet won't know until later this evening.

I hope I get to see my snake this evening lol The storm is hitting around the time I see him so far I think it's a baby rat snake hope he gets to stay around and not get eaten by a hawk! I think I'll keep trying to pick him up so he will get used to it then when he gets bigger I'll be able to handle him too, I'm silly I know but I love snakes!

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Lea, have you figured out how to get the pics into your computer? You sould have a wire that plugs into the back of the computer and also the camera. I just leave mine plugged into the computer, so it's easy to just plug one end into the camera to download.
Hope you had a good meeting with your snake.

Here's another rud from you guys.

Love that double one Perenniallyme! I wonder if the Prairie Sun is from me, I had some of those! I grew them from my collected seed this year too, and I think some reverted, and some came true. I like the green center best though!

Lea needs a camera with a memory stick and a camera with a memory stick that fits right in it. That's what I have... It is super easy, you just take the memory stick out of the camera and pop it in the computer then you can just copy or cut and paste to your picture files. Sometimes I just take them right from the memory stick onto DG ~ that way is a little different, and probably too confusing or I'd explain it! : )

Had to fix some words, My kid got crumbs in the keyboard *groan*

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Oh the computer will recognize the memory stick and ask if you want to put them in your file and it does it for you which is easier than cutting and pasting... It also has a spot that says delete pics when finished, so when you put the stick back in the camera it is blank and ready to go for the next round! :)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I think Sharon, I can't see my pictures until I put the disk in couldn't find them a while ago in the computer. I signed up for photobucket but they don't have a link (?) for that they have twitter and other things and programs but no photobucket of course lol

Meredith I think that's what I bought where Robin works at it's a memory something I put it into the computer then plug the camera into it I think lol Haven't had the time to check it out lol I got it a couple of months ago lol

I'll try and check it out tomorrow not making any promises I still have a lot of things to do outside and when I come in I'm just dripping and pooped out LOL When I get cooled off and rested I hit it again lol It did rain a bit tonite so I know I'll be out there trying to get crab grass out I'm almost finished in the side yard for this time it'll be back lol Soo wish I could afford to mulch this side yard! I have plenty of leaves but it just invites the darn voles grrrr!!!

Didn't see my snake tonite probably because of the storm I hope anyway he is so pretty a bright silver and dark grey if it's a rat snake the grey won't be seen that much when he's full grown but he sure is beautiful now! I probably won't see him every night anyway but just once in a while is still good lol

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

The wire works the same way, I just hate having to keep it plugged into the computer... my girls would probably manage to break it or something. lol ;) I've been waiting for you to be able to post pics for a very long time. :)

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

ME TOO!!! I have had gardens come and go and still no pictures I've lost the opportunity for so many good pictures! GRRR! It just seems I'm so darn busy all the time something always comes up or there is always something that needs to be done LOL

Oh yes I plug it in and the pictures are there but I can't figure out how to find them when I hit browse on DG's I've been told to look in My Documents but they aren't there and went in and looked at My Computer to see if I could find anything that looked like my pictures but nothing no Kodak anywhere to be seen. This is all German to me and I'm part German LOL

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Okay, I'm not sure if yours looks the same as mine when I click on browse, but I have to look over to the left and the first thing is Documents, but two down there is Pictures... that's what I click on, unless you haven't put them in your picture file (which most cameras do automatically) that is where they should be Now if you haven't actually transferred them from the camera to the computer, if you look down that same left side at the very bottom it says Computer. You click on that (while the camera is attached) and all your drives come up (hard drive c and etc.) there should be some kind of removable drive that should say Kodak or whatever the memory disk is like sandisk etc.) (but not the disk drive~ unless you have them on cd~then this is where they'd be) does that help? You double click on the removable drive and then double click again on what on mine always comes up as DCIM or something like that. That is where your pics are and you can change the view from numbers to thumbnails, on the little button that says views.... What operating system are you on? Because they can all be a little different but that is the basic gist of it on any windows system. I've been using a personal computer for pics since Millenium.. Hope I could help. :)

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Oh I have to double click on whatever comes up after DCIM too. Then the pictures come up :)

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Prairie sun is probably from you, kl. I pigged out on rudbeckias, think I got around 8 different ones from several people. I still have some in flats that I'll have to take to the community garden because there's no room left in my front yard.

Lea, I was hoping we could try to go step by step. Do you go through a process of loading the pictures into your computer and giving them file names? I hope you understand what Meredith is saying, because I have no idea what DCIM is. I also don't know anything about photobucket or any of those other places. I think my pictures are stored in "my pictures" which is under "my documents" which is under "desktop".
Thanks, Meredith, for stepping in here. If we can't figure out how to explain it, I'll bet that our resident computer whiz, tcs, can. She's very good at giving easy to understand computer instructions. (Where are you, tcs?)

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Ha ha I think tcs has tried to help her before! Pictures isn't under My Documents on my computer.... if we knew Lea's operating system it would help. I think mine used to be under my documents on an older opperating system. I'm on Vista currently.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

You'd only have to worry about the DCIM if you haven't already loaded them on your computer... I am wondering if that's why she isn't finding them in Pictures or Documents. She might be plugging the camera in and not loading them before she tries to post them. It might not be her fault, the computer might not be auto recognizing it for her. Just a thought... because I think putting pics was the easiest thing to learn on DG, if you can load them on photobucket it is pretty much the same here. By hitting browse and finding them and everything anyway. :)

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Lea I haven't been on photobucket for a long time and all my albums are set to private there, but I checked it out to see if I could help you post a link... You can post a link here by clicking on where it says share... then just ignore the first thing that comes up where it says twitter and all that.... look to the right and there are little tabs.... one says get link code.. click on that and four down it says IMG for Bulletin Boards and Forums, the full size link is the one you copy and paste right on the thread just like you do for posting PF links. Let me know if you can try it that way instead... Then you won't have to find your pics on your computer when they are already on photobucket. : )

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I'm going to see if one works even though my albums are set to private. http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd73/flutterbug79/17.jpg[/IMG]

I had to delete the [IMG] in front of http and then it worked.... my album is private so the link is showing it's been deleted but if your albums aren't private it will work. :)

I stopped using photobucket after I found the free Picasa Web Albums, it is so much easier to use for me and I love the way it is set up Plus you don't get all the annoying adds like you get on photobucket. Recently they;ve even made it really easy to order prints directly from your albums and you can order them from most of the top photo printing websites. I prefer Snapfish personally, they have really great prices and I found the prints to be better quality than, or equal to the others. : ) Here's my public gallery http://picasaweb.google.com/FlutterbugGarden

lebug, didnt you get Kodak easyshare software with your camera ?? When I had a kodak ,I loved the software.I have 3 different ways to download my photos into windows live photo gallery, panisonic photofun studio(came with the camera) and my HP printer I can stick the card in the printer .But I use the usb cord thats always plugged into my computer. Id drive down to help you,but your almost to Louisville, about 4 hrs from me !!!! iam near Ft.Wayne.Wish i could be of more help

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Meredith I think I have the Picasa in that software that I can send pictures to I'll have to check it out have some things to get done today as always then I'll put my software in and check it out.

I don't care about printing pictures no reason to print pictures here and that's all they talk about I could learn to do that I just want to send them here I'm sick of them telling me how to print pictures all kinds of instructions for that lol

Yep huggergirl that would be a nice drive for you :)

I just don't get along with computers and software when this thing finally gets figured out I know I'm going to kick myself cause it's probably simple as all get out! I was hoping Robin/dryad57 would be able to help when she was here a while back but we got caught up with plants lol

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Lea, are you on facebook? Robin is on there more often than here lately.

If all else fails, get a MAC :)

Port Norris, NJ(Zone 7b)

Gathering seeds from my balsam is anyone is interested.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

I don't have time for facebook lol I have nine people waiting for me to get on there now lol I'm telling you I'm over whelmed here I would rather spend my time outside than being on the computer all day I've just got too much to do out there and by the time I get in to stay I'm bushed :) I do good to keep up here lol

Just got done cleaning part of a bed out front out wanted to get it all done but sweat kept getting in my eyes lol It's so darn humid out there lol I have weeds trying to go to seed and can't have that!

Yes I think I do understand what Meredith is saying :) I figure if I get this thing out of the package I can put my pictures on it like Meredith is saying it will probably pop up after I plug it into the computer or I can go in and find it yes I think I do know where it will be if it doesn't pop up the same place I click on when I put a disk in from one of my external drives :)

Sharon I think when I download pictures from my camera it goes straight to my camera software can't find the pictures after I download them except for when I have my software from my camera in there and in answer to your question I have XP. Let this rest for a while I'm going to lay down for a bit :)

Thanks guys I just can't do this right now :)

I'm a little sick right now and will check it out later not real sick just a little :) It's just this darn heat lol

Terese is too busy but thanks for thinking of her I couldn't handle going back and forth from place to place I would meet myself coming and going!

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi all. I just collected my first cinquefoil seeds and my first anchusa dropmore. Feel like a little kid every time I find seeds of something for the first time. It's so interesting how differently different plants make their seeds, and it's like "aha!" - found you.
Am I nuts or just a bit seedy?

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Lea you get some rest! I'm glad what I said made a little sense! lol I have such a hard time typing what I am thinking so it comes out the way it's working in my mind! :) I had XP before this one and it was very similar to Vista, I actually liked it better but I had no choice because Dell lost my computer when I sent it out for repairs, so they had to send me a replacement and I had no say in what I got!

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Lea, we cross-posted. Hope you feel better.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I cross posted with you too! lol Your so funny .. definitely not nuts! : )

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Meredith.

Simpsonville, SC(Zone 7b)

Perennialyme, I'll have to be sure and swap for some of your Cinquefoil seeds if you have enough for the swap! A good friend of mine is a huge fan of them (she's a transplant from Montreal) I'd love to start her a whole bunch! Are they hard to do?

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

I definitely have enough, kl. I've never started them from seed, so I don't know if they're easy or hard. I've also always dead-headed in the past, so I don't know if they'll self-seed or not. They're quite small seeds.

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

What kind do you have Sharon I've got:

http://www.vanbloem.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=plants.plantDetail&plant_ID=1106

I'll save some of mine they are always reseeding Kelly but I keep digging the little plants up and giving them away lol Where mine are they don't have that much room to multiply but I'm thinking of putting some out front where I was cleaning out yesterday I need something close to the road but I worry about the salt trucks in the winter it flies in my plants when they do the street out front. They are a good one to WS saving seeds seem to be a pain to me you have to catch them when the time is just right. I bet those seeds would come up if she pitched them out in the fall if the critters don't get them mine from reseeding are about an inch tall so they just started coming up probably about a month ago.

I want some yellow does anyone have a yellow one, I don't have enough yellow in my beds lol I keep watching for plants here of them but never see any for sale.

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

That's pretty, Lea.
Mine is in the pic, if I can find it. I don't know the name.

I'm thinking of getting rid of it, because I don't have room in full sun, and it gets very sprawly where it is, though it seems happy. Maybe it's just a sprawly plant? I just don't really appreciate though, as it crawls over a million other plants and in the pathway.

Thumbnail by perenniallyme
Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Looks like Miss Willmott, I used to have that one but lost it for some reason:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/B0013CRDYA/ref=dp_image_0?ie=UTF8&n=286168&s=garden

Mine is planted along the drive way so it only gets morning sun but it still grows good maybe you could put your plant in some morning sun some where out of the way so it wouldn't sprawl over your other plants mine does just as good there as when Miss Willmott was in the full sun. It gets sun until about 12 I guess? I can check it out if you want to know tomorrow it's been cloudy off and on the last few days so I may have to wait a few days before I check the sun out for sure. I have an iris on one side of it and a crazy daisy on the other side of it.

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Lea, it could be Miss Wilmot, but I don't know for sure.
I don't have an out of the way!!! You saw my back yard, well my front yard is chock full, and is maybe 6 feet deep, and I don't have side yards at all, except a bit of concrete that gets me from the front to the back.

This is my front yard at its very deepest place.

Thumbnail by perenniallyme
Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

And that is gorgeous too! Tell me how do you keep your Goblin in check do you just cut it back or dig it up mine is taking over out front and anything in it's path is standing back from fear lol I really need to cut it back. What is the gaillardia behind it I have one like that but don't know what it is I love the color on it! I may not even have the Goblin but it’s one of them it has the yellow around the flower. This is just it’s first year I planted it in the spring from a gal. pot and it’s fallen over and spreading at least four foot wide! I may just have to take it out there and put something else in lol The other one looks like it’s going to be more behaved!

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Thanks, Lea. I'll look at the tag of what you say is Goblin, and see if it is. This is only the 2nd year for the gaillardias. I can't even remember if I bought the red one as a half dead one on the Lowe's clearance rack, or if I got seeds from you guys. I don't think it's named, but I'll check. Those ones you see are so far very well behaved. I do deadhead them til the end, then will stop to collect some seeds. The very tall one (aristata??) that I started from seed last year was way too tall and flopping all over the place. I think it was an annual, and decided I didn't want it anyway, so I pulled them out last fall. Ut-oh, I just bought some seeds of a yellow gaillardia. Think it has some red around the edges of the center and is not supposed to be too tall. Anyway, I hope it isn't the same as your bad-mannered one.
