Oh I just love the egrets shot showing both!!
Pipe Creek Wildlife Area part 3
Nice place for birding, and great shots.
Took the 1.4 tele-converter today....took 450+ shots at 560mm...will not be taking the converter any more. :| lol
Aww, that's a shame, Burd. What do you reckon the problem was?
Not a single tack sharp shot...used a tripod, and some birds were only 20 feet away...it was like it didn't want to focus correctly. No big deal...I,m having a rough week any ways. lol
Sorry about the lost photos Burd and I hope the next week will go smoother for you.
Thank you Margaret and Duc. Will try again next weekend, I did finally come across some other birder's at the creek though and I got 3 new bird's for one fellow, he was pretty happy about it. ;)
Hi Burd. Sorry to hear about your experience with your 1.4x teleconverter. If I'm correct you own the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6 L USM Lens. Standing alone, it is has a MFD (Minimal Focus Distance) of about 12 feet. I'm not sure what a 1.4x teleconverter adds to the MFD. That could be the problem on some of your shorter distances. Do you have a Canon teleconverter ? Anyway, I'm just trying to think of what I would consider if that occurred to me. You might perform some tests at home. Take some photos using Manual Focus. I did read somewhere where auto-focus, using this lens, doesn't work on some Canon bodies.
A lot depends on what appeases an individual. I am seldom satisfied. I own a 1.4x and 1.7x teleconverter and seldom use either, especially the 1.7x. I struggle getting sharp photos with my 500mm lens. Adding the teleconverter usually makes things more frustrating, especially flight photos. And, I use a tripod. I have reached the conclusion that some subjects are just too far way to get a decent shot. And, I've spent enough money trying to achieve perfection so I'm trying to not expect the impossible. But, it's not easy .......
I have felt that frustration when trying so hard and it doesn't work....hope next time is better for you.
Linth, the converter is a Tamron 1.4 AF...auto focus works fine...I think what my problem that day was all the mud and moss in the marsh and the lens would not settle on the birds...I have some pretty nice shots with the converter from other time's but there was no debris to pull focus away. Here's a shot of a Tiger Swallowtail from the same day it was about 15 feet away...cropped of course. The converter speed to focus for flight shots is horrible. I will do some testing however, thanks.
Great pictures, Burd.
Beautiful, Burd. I really like the last one.
Good ones Burd. Love seeing the Willet in flight.
Thank you for posting the pictures, especailly of shore birds which I have not seen. Looks like a 'white-neck' to me but I do see the colored feathers on the back of its neck. ☺
Excellent photos Burd. I enjoyed seeing all of them!
Will be posting more after work...added another new one to my list today...seen 2 of the Red-necked Phalarope's today.
Edited to say: bird's are changing into fall and winter plumage's.

Love the Phalarope!
Good catch on the Red-necked Phalarope! Hard bird to get.
Resin
Nice shots, Burd. Way to go with the Red-necked Phalarope. Locally, I've been trying to track down a Wilson's Phalarope, three seen recently, but unsuccessful (so far).
