2010 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds Vol. 5

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Yes, I'll take that out of focus over mine anyday. Thanks Nan.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Yes, me too (take the out of focus), since I still don't have any visitors. THe Agastache and Crocosmia are about to bloom too! The trumpet vine is still blooming and the honeysuckle. C'mon guys, all this nectar just waiting to be sipped!!

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Oh Mrs. Ed, I just can't believe there are none to partake in your beautiful garden that you have provided for them!

Awwww, like I've mentioned before. I'd be glad to send Mrs_Ed some of mine (darling hummers) if only they will cooperate. Here is my first clear pix of a pretty boy at the feeder this AM. It made my morning! Oh yes, FOTV; I saw his parter--a female visited red Canna just before I captured this photo.

Thanks LL. Well I'm at least happy that I get some in the fall.

Marlton, NJ

Nice ones guys! I have them coming here everyday but unfortunately most of the plants are burned up from the terrible heat.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Yes Pelle, yesterday I learned of the unpresidented heat waves our North Eastern States are experiencing. The heat here is quite oppressive too. Coming home yesterday evening I thought if I worked outside for the day I would have been in serious heat stroke! Plus the humidity--one could almost cut the air with a knife--so to speak. You all stay cool and keep hydrated.

Nice shots everyone!! Yes its been hot up here...but a nice rain storm came and the heat wave has ended..low 80's all next week ..hehe and I,m on vacation. Drink plenty of water all!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Nice photos everyone,we got some rain yesterday, the heat is spose to be over for a few days anyway.I hope you that are out east get some relief today.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

The quality of the pix isn't the best since the sun light is receeding before supper time, but I was so pleased to find this male hummingbird returned to the feeder on a regular basic.

will need a shutter speed of 1/3000 sec or better to stop those wings...

Sandusky, OH

ahh the right angle and we get a higher shutter speed and good detail..

once the shade takes over the feeder I start adjusting the camera...

if I had a "better beamer" we could make up for the shade but not too bad...last

Hello everyone over here in Hummersville!!!

Enjoying looking through all the nice pictures everyone is sharing. Haven't had much free time to spend photographing my little monsters this summer until a couple days ago when it finely rained.. Boy, the plants sure did need it and so did I. Got a two day break from having to water everything outside. No break from filling the feeders though.. Hey Mrs_Ed, no hummers huh!! Well your welcome to a few of mine...Bring your butterfly net and help yourself...

Burd_ , That Rebel does a fantastic job, even at 1600 iso.. Go get that "Better Beamer". It does an awesome job of projecting the flash to your target.. The results you'll get are well worth the cost.. I lent mine to a friend. He liked it so much I told him just to keep it and I'd get another one...Needless to say I still need to order that darn thing...

A few of the new arrivals that are fledging from a couple days ago.. Under the apple tree after the rain..

I like it too, I missed a good shot at mine on my Blue salvias just now, and it's too hot out there....to brace for another shot!!!!

Very nice crowd you've got there, Uncle! Keep your incredible photos coming.

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

Nice photo,Iam thinking drop my camera and get a new one...LOL

Macon County, IL(Zone 5b)

Awesome pictures all! Burd you are really good at getting the detail, I love it. Maybe I'll have more time in retirement to spend stalking the hummers and taking pictures. Too bad that's a loooong way away.

I did get to see the hummers a fair amount this weekend as I worked in the gardens. I am pretty sure I have some that are recently fledged. I noticed one or two that seemed larger, but I can't say for sure. I still rarely see more than one on or near a feeder at a time. My hummers are not nearly as social as those Ohio and Missouri birds.

I,m not anywhere near retirement either...lol but when its hot I tend to just cool off on the patio and I have set up a nice feeder station for the hummers about 5 feet from the window...so on Sundays when I usually stay home...I get to take my time and work on getting those nice detailed shots...but I delete many, many photos along the way. I,m not much of a gardener but I do have a Hosta next to the feeder but none seem to be interested in checking it out.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Hey Burd, since it's so hot, maybe you could set up a hose with a fine mist near the patio. I've read they love that.

I did that with the birdbath last week but everyone was afraid of it...will try that though with the hummers thanks Mrs_Ed!

Here are some leaf misters…
http://www.humming-birds.com/waterpdt.html

I bought a little last year that put into tubing, like irrigation tubing. I'm going to hook it up to a tube/pump in the pond, I think. That's if I ever get a hummingbird. Previously I used a hose with a fine mist. I didn't have any takers though… I assume it was because it was September and not very warm out!

Columbia City, IN(Zone 5b)

When I water the hummers and butterflies love the mist from the sprinkler,I had butterflies everywhere yesterday ,soon as i grabbed a camera off they went.My hummers will play in the mist zoom zoom zoom...

Marlton, NJ

Very nice pic Lily!
I had 4 hummers zipping around here yesterday.

Macon County, IL(Zone 5b)

Ha! Burd I didn't mean to assume you were retired, I hope that didn't come across. I was just trying to think of a time when I wouldn't have to take and delete 90 photos to get one good one. I am just looking forward to enjoying the simpler things and getting good pics.

Mrs. Ed, I read about the mist too, but not sure my little girls and guys will be so bold. My bird bath fountain was murdered in a home improvement accident, but parts should arrive tomorrow. I hope it will be another attraction to remind the hummers to come back next year.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Would be interesting to see, IL! That's so funny "A home improvement accident"

Hey, I had a hummingbird yesterday for about 30 seconds. Must have been moving through. Later in the night, I sat outside for over an hour and nothing showed up.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Marna, it has been so hot here, I rarely could go outdoor to watch mine. This little gal was glad I'm out this early morning. ^_^

I noticed this little one has a broken lead feather on it's left wing.. Also some spider webbing out close to the tip of the wing..
