Got in the car at close to 9pm and it was reading 104 degrees! It's so hot!
However, my friends and family back home in Scotland have rain and miserable cool (for summer) weather so I am reminding myself to appreciate the sunshine :)
( a few degrees cooler would make it easier to appreciate though!)
How do you survive a Mid -Atlantic heat wave ?
Was it still 104 after you drove a little? My thermometer reads much higher when the car has been sitting for a while, and then it drops a bit once I'm on my way. I'll bet it was still very hot, though. It was 84 here around 10 pm.
My garden will be left to 2 of my young grandsons and my DH for a whole week, God help it!! I'll be in a little near Haddonfield, NJ babysitting our youngest grandson.
greenhouse,
We're scheduled for Rehobeth the week of the 14th. We know the Crab House, but would like to know about the restaurant overlooking the marshy creek.
Gita, when do the big box stores stop their plant offerings?
A friend of ours is doing the MS150 this weekend. It is a 150 mile bike ride to earn $$ for MS. Jules talked to him yesterday and they biked the first 75 miles. He wasn't sure if he was going to do 75 or 100 miles yesterday but said it was just too hot to go further can't even imagine doing another 75 miles again in today's projected heat.
Sounds like folks had some good times despite the heat. Pretty much this whole summer I have stayed indoors where it is nice and cool. Our gardens look pretty bad and I am pasty rather than tan. Oh well, all we can hope for is that next year things will be better.
Ruby
Just moving the hose around I get all sweaty so usually have to turn the hose on myself
Flowerjen, I have a potable water hose in the garden, and after I water some of the rows with it I turn it upwards and cut the flow way down so it's like a drinking fountain bubbler, and that icy cold water is just the best thing!
We were working on finishing the fence between the little orchard and the veggie garden early this morning, so we could let the chickens into the orchard to deal with all the weeds. As we worked I kept reaching up to pick a peach and munch on it. The White Champions were so sweet and juicy! The Red Havens got too parched and they were mostly rather small and bland, but some were good. This was all before breakfast, too, but my stomach is telling me that possibly I ate too many peaches...
Roses, the little restaurant overlooking a marshy creek was on our side of the Delaware Bay, not near Rehoboth. It's the Waterfront Café in Newport, on Nantuxent Creek, by the Sun Dog Marina. The crab place we like to go to in Dewey Beach used to be called Crabber's Cove; it's in Ruddertowne. They changed the name to Lighthouse something-or-other but they may have changed it back again. We love the southern touch of hush puppies served with the meal. They were once complimentary but not any more; still, it's fun to get them.
greenhouse gal it dropped all the way down to 94 by the time we were home (about 15 mins)! Usually I think it's the sun hitting the car that causes the temp to read so high but I don't think I could blame the moon for that! Have only ever seen it that high with the sun shining on it before.
We've just had some rain/ storms and it's a very lovely 75 now :)
Raining here...of course cause I watered the gardens...Murphy's gardening law
oh no! lol!
We had a severe thunderstorm rumble through here. It took down part of my bean fencing - again. We're going to have to come up with a better solution for next year. But it did leave a half inch of rain, so that was really nice. And it's cooler AND drier now. Yay!
I've always figured that the temps are high in a parked car because it's sitting on pavement that radiates heat upward, since the sensor has to be outside the vehicle. I'm sure there's a generally accepted explanation but I don't know what it is.
Roses---
I don't think HD ever stops the "Plant Offerings"----until after the New Year. It just changes what they are offering....
Today--I saw some new, gigantic mixed planter pots for $29.97.
The remaining shrubs are few--and many are clearanced.
The annuals look so-so--even though they don't look all that bad--BUT, who wants more annuals this time of year?
The focus now is on container plants--all kinds of "instant" mixed planters...for people who want "instant" beauty on their decks. Lots of palms and other Houseplants....
Later on--the "offerings" will change to shrubs to be planted in the fall and a lot of evergreens and Alberta Spruces----
THEN, of course, the X-Mas trees wil arrive right after Thanksgiving along with all kinds of blooming winter plants--like:
Amaryylis, Gift packs of same, Paperwhites, Deco plants of all kinds, etc...
X-mas cactus, Cyclamen, Rosemary topiary, and all kinds of Norfolk Island palms....etc...etc....
The sale of X-mas trees is also good--income wise, but short lived.
Profit wise--around Thanksgiving--the Hardware Dept. carries the income load. Lots of purchases by men and wives as gifts of tools and such. Amazing!
Then, in January, all sales of anything just die off....and we enter the first "dead period" where hours are cut and people are let go or transferred to other departments--IF they want to keep you.
Same old---Same old---every year.....
Gita
Yeah, I don't know about the parked car either, I always figured it was the sun but heat radiating from the pavement would make sense too - heat was certainly radiating from everywhere yesterday! So much airier now, it's lovely!
Temps dropped 25 degrees!!!! after the rain...man was it NICE...I ran out to do some weeding and planted some sedum and did some more weeding....ate dinner outside....went for ice cream(kids had coupons for free cones) ate them outside....can it please stay like this???!!!!
Tell me about it, Flowerjen! I actually put on a long-sleeved shirt to go out and do the chickens this morning! We got a half inch of rain, too. We were watching it come down on the roof of our garage and it looked like actual waves of water crashing on the peak!
Nice day today, low humidity with a breeze
Isn't it wonderful? We went to our sailing club and swam and kayaked in the lake for the first time all summer! It has been too hot to sit on a deck in the sun up until now. It was just lovely!
Nice day today, low humidity with a breeze
Today too. Isn't it great? Whee! Still need to water though
Sally you are back. Hope the trip was great. Lets see how to survive a Mid-Atlantic Heat Wave. Go to the Beach!
Hey on our way down the traffic on 95 was horriable so Ric got off and came down 17 we went right passed Bent & Becky's Bulbs. I saw a sign for in on 17.
Saturday was just beautiful here, low humidity
Today not so much, rained where we were having our church picnic 15mins south of me, no rain at all at my house still bone dry.
It's still bone dry at our house, too. We had a violent thunderstorm last week, with sheets of rain coming down. Hitting the garage roof it looked like ocean waves! It also knocked out the garage door opener on my side, so we have to have it replaced. But we haven't had a drop of moisture since then. The temperatures have been so lovely, though! We were able to turn the a/c off and hear the birds and smell all the summer fragrances.
That's not fair that your picnic got rained on and your house didn't!
We had that thunderstorm but not as violent
Figured it would rain on us, good thing they had a bunch of canopies
Everything was sun baked yesterday and today in the OBX, high was only 87*F @ 53%. The wind was scalding and out of the west, strong yesterday and more breezy today. It blew the thermal out to sea so the surf temps were 57-60*F, chilly. The pools however are like baths. Fishing has been poor, but a bad day of fishing beats a good day at work. I can't wait to come back for 2 weeks starting at Labor Day when the crowds are gone. Ric
Br I didn't think the water was that chily there!! But we went further south a number of years, almost the So Carolina line.
Yeah and a bad day on the beach in NC beats a good day of regular old suburbian central MD
Gosh - Everyone became really quiet all of a sudden. I haven't been around for weeks but this is the first of my threads that I wanted to read. I told you folks earlier that I have spent more time indoors this summer than outdoors. I did have to go out yesterday afternoon and this morning too and the afternoon heat was the kind to take a person's breath. Thankfully my appointment today was early enough that I don't have to be out and about during the hottest part of the day. Supposedly we will have rain later today and maybe some the next two days also. Suits me fine.
Good to read everyone's posts and I see that the Traveling Duo of Ric and Holly have been away.....dang ya....I used to love The Outer Banks. Haven't been in some years now though. Sally, did I understand that you had a vacation during this time also? Tell me more.
Good to see all your smiling faces today.
Ruby
Hi ruby! and john!
Nice to see you and agree the last two days were very steamy! Now been raining steady all night I think. Says we could get an inch today.
I did sneak in a vacation. We (family plus two kids friends) went on our first ever cruise, to Bermuda. Wasn't sure how we would fit in to the pampered life but guess what, that wasn't too hard to do LOL. We all had lots of fun and good memories. Now we all are saving pennies to do a Mid Atlantic Cruise, right ?? ^_^
Still need the rain here....
Didn't you get the rain yesterday? We haven't emptied out our rain gauge to check it, but a friend just south of us in Goshen said that they had gotten 3.5" by 5 o'clock, and when we came back from dinner last night we could see that there had been more rain. I wish we had gotten some of it a couple of weeks ago instead of having it all now, but at least it was a gentle rain that seemed to soak in.
We have gotten a good bit of rain over the last week or so. Sorry Jen to hear that you aren't getting any of this.
It is wet enough that with the heat it is down right steamy. I have been handling most of the heat by staying inside and working on the backroom. It is a Mud/utility room. Think basement in a house that doesn't have a basement.lt was dry-walled but never finished no tape and Spackle or paint. Just like the laundry room. You would think this would be an over the winter job but the main heat source for our house a wood/coal stove is in that room and it gets pretty hot to work back there in the winter not to mention that you couldn't do the corner the stove sits in. So I really want this done before winter sets in.
again only .06" big deal, right?...we need a whole day of drenching rain
That's a miserable amount! We got 1.7 inches the other day, and it helped a lot, but it would have been nicer to have it spread out a bit. Still, we're not complaining. The water table is really low and even large trees along the highway look stressed.
We had almost 4 inches here. Thought nI would see refreshed plants after the 2 day rains but it seems like I'm seeing lots more browning dying leaves on trees and plants after the rain than before.
What's up with that? Are we seeing the effects of corexit/oil toxic rain damage in this area as has begun to be recorded in other areas like Mississippi? A different kind of acid rain?http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/ybenjamin/detail?entry_id=65552
Judy--nothing that drastic........
I have noticed a bit of browning too--especially in the flowering annuals....but then I think--"Well, the Summer IS coming to an end!!!".....Most of that Fresh and new look is long gone....Petunias are leggy and not blooming so much any more, some of my usual annuals never really got off the ground...like my Heliotropes....Perhaps I bought the miniature version of them????
My guess would also be that too much rain-- all at one time--when the plants have been in a drought survival mode may affect them negatively....This is just an over the top wild guess.....
On the other hand--
My Daturas and Brugs are loving this weather as are my Cleomes.
My KK Hibiscus is ready to bloom for a second round after I cut it back after the first round...
My Fall mums (from last year) are growing huge--even after I cut them all back earlier this year.
Tomatoes are coming in OK--nothing spectacular....Need a new location....this one is used up....
My potted Hibiscus is blooming away---it just doesn't know any better....
My Mandevilla is up as high as it can go----Just an amazing vine!!!!
Even though I am sitting here with the air conditioner running, I am not complaining about the last few days temperatures. Low 80's feel really great compared to some of the high 90's we had this summer.
I haven't been around Dave's for a while and just wanted to check in and say hello to you great folks. Sally, the cruise sounds wonderful. That is something that I always thought I would love to do. Hey, I am up for it if you can round up a group of MAG'ers to do a cruise together some time. I will start a penny fund in order to attend.
We too just returned from a trip to Cape Cod Massachusetts. We hadn't been since 2007 and had a great time visiting with our friends who live there and also seeing another lady from England who I used to chat with on another website. We always stay the night going and coming with my niece Angela who lives in New Jersey. This visit I got to see her last baby, Evan who is now four months old.
I am glad to be back home even though I feel as though I have a months worth of housework to do. Next big project here is getting the plant room organized in order to store my houseplants when I bring them back inside soon. At the moment all the space where plants are to set is covered with shopping bags. A great store that can't be found in VA always has me doing a lot of my Christmas shopping early when I get there. Anyone in Maryland or Delaware have Christmas Tree Shoppes? I have already shopped one of them in New Jersey. If you have a chance to visit one of these places, take along lots of money, just a warning.
Anyway....good to see everyone and hopefully there won't be a need to complain about the weather for a while. Good grief let's hope that this winter isn't a repeat of last year. Reminder to tell John to begin seeing about getting a generator in operating order.
Take care and I hope I can find more time to be involved with this forum.
Ruby
Hi Ruby,
Just wanted to say that the daylilies that you gave me at Holly's swap last year gave a wonderful display this year. Thanks again.
Teri
Ruby, I was just thinking about you today as I remember the several times you would post and wish us all a good week end.. So sweet of you to do that. Glad you are back safe and sound.
I'm still using my ac, too. Maybe it has become a habit! But I don't enjoy the sweating no matter what date it is....
As for winter, I know where my snow shovels are and my boots. That's enough for now.
I did learn to practice a kind of economy of motion/activity this summer. Not sure how to translate that into getting accomplished my "to do" list before it's really cold. Want to just soak up some good days to balance out the harshness of this summer's intensity. I know how my stressed plants feel!
Judy
Spent some time out side today doing fall clean up. Started out slow this morning then we took JR to the fea market up the road for Kids Day. It was really nice. Then home for some fall clean up. It was just beautiful out there today. Just love this weather.
Wouldn't it be lovely if it were this way all year!!! It's wonderful after the steamy summer we had.
I hate to be the one to burst anyone's bubble but our forecast temperature wise later this week is back in the 90's. Dang, dang, dang!!! It is supposed to be in the 80's today but upon awakening I turned the air on immediately where usually I am up several hours before turning it on.
Anyway......I have a busy afternoon ahead of me. Still working on preserving tomatoes from the garden. There are other things I had on my agenda but was feeling lousy earlier and cancelled a doctors appointment I had and rescheduled for a couple of weeks from now.
Judy, I am glad the Day Lilies did well for you. Hi to everyone else and here is hoping that everyone will have a good week coming up.
Ruby
