I was just reading some of the Classic threads and have found places where a poster's comments were removed (by their own request - according to Admin). This leaves interesting threads where the continuity has been lost and some don't make sense any more. Is this a result of the recent controversy? Can members in effect cause destruction of a thread by removing their past posts in a wholesale manner because they are now mad about something? It seems to me that once you post something in a public forum DG that it is not fair to other members to tear up the foundations of a thread and should not be allowed. It should be enough that you resign or post no more, but why harm others? Is there an Admin policy about this? Just my opinion.
Holes in threads
The "removed at member's request" notes were most likely from the very early days of DG when we did try to accommodate members who demanded we remove all their posts when they left. As you saw, we soon discovered that it was not the right thing to do, because it left past conversations with odd gaps.
That is why we adopted (and maintain) a policy of not removing a member's posts en masse. (Not to mention the amount of work involved to go through and manually delete posts one-at-a-time.)
Thank you.
