What's Happening in your neck of the woods?

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

((((Carol)))) I just found this thread, and started to read about Fancy.......
Carol, she was a beautiful soul, and I know you miss her dearly.
As I've just heard, I'm crying.... farewell to your companion - a dear sweet girl.

s'funny - I was talking about you tonight, with a fellow who got a beagle from a Beagle Rescue - he's 4 yrs old, and so thin. The fellow's got to "fatten him up". The dog's name is Buddy.
I think rescues are wonderful things for dogs. There are so many dogs who need rescuing, of all breeds.

Bless you, Carol.
btw everyone - once I read about Fancy (and that near the beginning of the month), I wasn't able to continue reading the rest of the thread. I'll have to go back later and read as much as I can.

Hi Susan ..

Sad days for sure re Fancy .. I think everyone shed a tear that day.
How have you been ? Have you moved ?

Typical 'RAIN' day here .. which basically means .. NONE .. it gets forecast, it darkens over, thunder in the far northwest or over the Lake, then the system splits and goes around us .. exasperrating to say the very least. Altho .. I imagine if I hang clothes on the line, I might tempt the rain ^_^

Had a fire in the Chimenea last evening, it was cool enough to do that, AND, the bugs weren't too bad either .. I can only imagine most everyone is dodging those hard shelled little brilliant green weevils that are flying around .. second or third year for them here .. they don't bite, but they do bother !!

Off to keep a date with some laundry .. just 2 days away from the trip to get the puppy .. getting excited for sure !!

Have a great Sunday everyone

~M~

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

SHUT UP !!!!!!!!!!!! Well .. the 2 storm clouds that WERE going north and south of TBay, changed their minds and we are getting a DELUGE !! There is a river running out of the veg garden, sure hope the tender seedlings are hanging on.
Needed the rain, so, I am not gonna complain (too much) LoL

One more load of laundry and I am good to go .. altho I am not going anywhere specific ^_^

~M~

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

Haven't moved, haven't sold the mobile.
There's a good chance someone who looked at it last night will, but then people have said that before.
He's also waiting for probate to clear, in Ontario (he's here in Calgary, and sister in Ontario looking after things......). It's been a month, so who knows how long it will take. I don't know about these things.
He's hoping by end of July, but thinks it may be until Sept.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Awwwwwww Susan .. selling a home can be so disheartening .. you think all is well, offer in, and then .. BLAH ..
I wish for you ONLY the very best .. and, remember .. "Good things come to those who wait" ^_^

Have taken my 'laundress chapeau' off .. slapped on my chef's hat .. it has stopped raining so the BBQ is fired up and awaiting the food to be cooked ..

SOoooooooooooo .. off and running !!

~M~

TORRINGTON, AB(Zone 3b)

not to worry, Marilynne!!

Turns out the sale of the trailers here is picking up - some are selling for more than they were before.

We had someone look at ours last night, but he's waiting for a Probate of a will to go through (in Ontario) and it's only been 1 month....

A fella who lives in the park is buying trailers (I think he's going to rent them out). He's going to come see ours, and he knows how much we want for it ($25k).

A Trailer Salesman came by and said we should ask more for it. He took pictures, and likes what he sees. The hot tub would be a negotiable extra. He thinks we should list at $29,900 and take no less than $28,500.

So, that's how things stand. We shall see what the next few days bring (by Tues, anyway)

Victoria Harbour, ON

Morning, just got home from my trip...Crissy, one of the southern girls came back with me so we're going sightseeing today and tomorrow...

Was sick for 3 days so was hard to keep the pace and be sociable..lol..Crissy now has the same, guess I passed it on, bad me..

Weather hasn't been the greatest here..Wednesday night after the quake we had a tornado pass through..lots of damage, MIL and a BIL had bit of a scare, good part of the mobile home park was hit, Greg's business had roof taken off, 3 or 4 business completely demolished..Crissy and I went through last night..all the clean up had been done and still devastation...wow, at least no fatalities...

Best I go get breakfast..be back later
Hope you are all doing ok

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Hiya Betty ^_^

Sorry to hear you were under the weather in Cincinnati .. hmm .. that sounds like it could be the name of a movie !! Kinda like 'Sleepless in Seattle' !!
Hope Crissy is OK ..

People here are still talking about the tornado/storm .. seems lots of folks here in TBAY have mega relatives down that way, and, of course the media coverage was so well done .. sorry to hear about your sons business, glad none of your relations were harmed.

Preparations for the trip tomorrow to go and get Piper are almost complete .. even though it's just a two (maybe 3 days) trip seems there is SO much to remember. My BIGGEST thing is meds and vitamins .. OH, and lipstick and mascara .. LOL
So .. if I am not on here for a few days, I'll be travelling along the shores of Lake Superior ...

Off to make supper

Here is something pretty spectacular to watch:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsjImCzpHZA

It is part of the pre wedding gala concert last weekend prior to the weddin of the Crown Princess of Sweden.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Just got in a few hours ago from taking Crissy to Buffalo airport..got to tell you, travelling on our highways when everyone is having a 4 day weekend is not good...actually think I got home only by a few hours earlier than Crissy who flew out of Buffalo and had a 4 hr. wait in Atlanta..lol..

Had a bath, drinking neocitron and off to bed...going to go back and read all my threads once I come home from early Canada Day celebrations in Elmvale..going with 4 girls and am so hoping I'll be back early aft....couch for me...

Hope you are safe and well..

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Carol - that video is AMAZING. Thanks for sharing it.

Happy Canada Day to everyone.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Happy 'Canada Day' everyone...hope your weather co-operates for all the celebration events and that you can spend it doing something special..

Ann, are you visiting with the Queen today?

Just getting ready to go with a group of friends to the Elmvale Canada Day celebrations...perhaps staying in bed and trying to rid myself of this cold would have been better but nope, going to venture out and enjoy..

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

We are back from picking up Piper, and now, in the throes of the much FORGOTTEN training .. will attach ONE pic as I will be posting others on the Pet Forum.

Kind of exhausted ... driving 8 hours 2 days back to back in semi holiday traffic was a bit much .. some WILD and crazy drivers out there !!!

I'm still around ladies... When I get a chance i read to catch up, but after 2 days or so its really alot to read.. Still waiting on a computer.. Brother in law is coming this weekend and he gets 10% off at staples, so were just waiting on him... My stepdaughter keeps the computer in her room most days, so i feel bad using it...

Still hanging in with the pregnancy, 2 to 6 weeks left to go.. Had my baby shower on sunday and I got pretty much all I needed to start... Still need a high chair and a few other things, but nothing that I need for a few months..

Hopefully I will be back online soon..

Betty - the Queen is here and we saw the mounties before and after her landau, but missed IT completely. MAYBE something shows in the photos I snapped, camera held way over my head. We heard the two 21 gun salutes - one when she arrived and one when she left the Hill, and two passes by the Snowbirds. I DO have a shot of the Landau returning, empty. The Queen returned from the Hill by limo.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Just got this pic taken the night I received my volunteer of the year award. The lady is Trudy Cowan who directed the restoration of Lougheed House and after whom the award is named!

Nice pic, Carol. And a well-deserved award. I'm sure you do the volunteering because you enjoy it, but it's always nice to be recognized for your efforts.

I DID get a few pics that showed mounties and one that showed the Queen and Prince Phillip in the Landau (just). If you are interested, I posted them on the coffee thread yesterday - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1112545/#new
I also posted a couple of pics of my new car received yesterday.

Looks like a lovely weekend here in Ottawa. Very welcome after a cool week. Have a great weekend.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Lovely pic Carol ..

We are going through a HEAT WAVE .. at least for Thunder Bay .. with the humidex we will be sitting in the low to mid 30s celsius for a week .. uggg .. I try not to keep the puppy out too long, kind of putting a damper on the training !!

Enjoy your weekend

Afternoon everyone...hot outside, imagine, one of the nicest days and I'm inside doing 3 Christmas quilt blocks that should have been mailed 2 weeks ago..must have them done to mail out tomorrow..isn't that sad! lol

Lovely photo Carol..well deserved praise I'm sure..

"M" puppy is too adorable..getting into mischief???

As for the Queen..I remember being in Brownies and the Queen came to visit Penetanguishene, not sure what year, tried to go back and see but couldn't access info on that visit..when I'm at work Monday I'll go in search...

Jenn, it's been a few days since you've posted, baby arrive??? you know, when Crissy and I came through Windsor on the way to my house the first thing I thought of was you, mad at myself that I didn't ask at least for your telephone number so I could call and say hi and check up on you....

Are you all pooped after all the Canada Day celebrations?

This morning I went to Elmvale, came home with a car load of plants..2 I don't recognize...never saw a phlox with variegated leaves and yet the lady seeling said indeed they were ???? and then she called a couple more that I bought - turtle plants, looked it up and can't seem to find those..let's hope she just didn't make up those names..lol...

Would love to stay and chat BUT Christmas is coming and I've got to get them made...give me slap please...shaking my head here.....

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Betty yes there is a phlox with variegated leaves, had one last year but it seems to have disappeared.
Turtle plant is Chelone.

Thank you, and yes I did research on the phlox...

The ones I purchased are called 'nora leigh' paniculata as per the tag..will be pretty...bought all she had, gave a few away to Darlene, guess I'll have to wait until next year to purchase more from her...

Hello again! I have been following along with you guys and realize that you all know each other quite well. Any chance you might introduce yourselves, tell me who you are, where you are, what you do??
I already know that Carol is a volunteer. You need to have a wonderful spirit to volunteer, and to be recongized for it kind of awe inpsiring.
Marilyn has a new friend - Piper - isn't he just the cutest thing you ever saw. Oh, sometimes I wish I had a little dog like that instead of this big hulk that I have but I love her and she loves me.
We are all waiting for a baby from Jen, and Betty just went on a trip and picked up a cold/flu.
I have already got some good advice from you guys from turning off the keypad on my laptop to putting a time limit on weeding.
I am still doing an hour a day. Now the truckload of mulch I had delivered turns out ot be full of lambs quarter so I am weeding my mulch pile now, and everywhere I put mulch to suppress the weeds.
Hot in NB today and tomorrow. My lillies are ready to explode, have a few blooming now but soon will have a lot.
I finished going through all pots of plants I had that wintered beside my greenhouse, threw out all the dead stuff and have 65 pots of various perennials that will go in my gardens somewhere. Must take a before and after picture.
Have a good evening everyone. I will check in again.......Laurie

Hiya Laurie ..

I am Marilynne .. the only other Canadian Gardening person I have met 'in person' is echoes from Winnipeg .. I was in Wpg with a friend who was in hospital in pretty bad shape, and Echoes, Brenda, and her hubby picked me up in their fancy shmancy convertible one very warm Sept evening, and we went for dinner ^_^
Awesome folks ..

I am a retired registered nurse (well sort of retired) I now do Hospice volunteering with end of life clients, and I will also take 2 and third year University Nursing students and mentor them if they require that .. the 2 I have now are amazing young people.
I also work (volunteer with) a service called VCARS (Victims Crisis and Referral Service) it's goes hand in hand with the city police .. we go to sit with and try to help victims of crime, abuse etc.

We have Lilly a 3 year old Westie, Smokey a 13 year old KING cat (Russian Blue), and, of course, PIPER ...a 2 month old Westie.

Have had LOTS happen in my life since last Sept .. if you are on FaceBook you can look me up and see the pics ^_^

I wish you ALL the best with your gardens .. hope you haven't the heat we have here .. gag me !!!

Hi Laurie and welcome. Nice to have a Maritimer amongst our ranks.

I'm Ann (without an 'e') and I play the viola. there's a bio and picture of me at http://www.internationalviolasociety.org/officers.htm - scroll to the very bottom of the page.

I have an extensive hosta garden. You can see those hostas at: http://violaann.smugmug.com/Garden/Hostas-in-my-garden-A-F/7617361_bLwdx but I've just uploaded 2010 pictures an am still making comments. I have not yet uploaded general garden pics from 2010.

I've not met any of the DG members on this thread in person, but I've met a few from the Coffee thread in the Parking Lot forum and I have a good hosta friend about an hour up the Ottawa Valley whom I met first on DG.

I'm sorry to hear about all the weeds in the mulch. That's a bit of a bummer. Nice lilies. They are nearly finished here in Ottawa. Are you plagued by lily beetle in NB?

Re the Queen, I don't think I told this over here, but in 1997 (I think), when she was here to present new colours to the Governor General's Foot Guards, our now DSIL (but BF at that time) was in the regiment. His parents were away; so we got to use the tickets to attend the presentation on the cricket field at Rideau Hall and then attend the reception on the patio. I didn't shake her hand, but at one time she was no more than 3 feet away from me.

I guess I should look and see if we have any pics anywhere. That was pre-digital.

Hi Laurie!
I'm a retired health care technologist, spent 40+ years in hospitals in several countries and lots of travelling. Then I bought a house and ever since I stay close to home. Thats when the gardening started and continues. Also I adopted my first sheltie and later a 2nd ( Fancy now an angel) , got involved in dog sports, mainly agility but did some obedience and rally also. Then a fight with breast cancer made me realise how much I enjoyed being at home and I retired . Started doing some volunteer activities, mainly with either gardens or dogs, more recently as a historical interpretor at Lougheed House. Also work with a sheltie rescue group.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Hi Laurie, I'm Betty..

Should be retired but went back to work, guess I needed to support my gardening and crafting habits...have 2 sons both born in 1969..in turn they each have 2 boys...so I'm a grandmother of a 11/12/13/14 year old boys..lordy I'm blessed!

I have a Border Collie Sailor, she's about 13, took her in from an abusive home, she's a darling..then came kittie Riley, grandkids thought I should have a kittie, then came Missy, someone put her in the dumpster next door, luckily SHE found me!

I'm energetic to say the least, always up to something...

Look forward to you joining us and especially look forward to photo's of your garden...

Ann, forgot to tell you that while I was in Franklin, Ohio last week we toured a garden, and what a garden it was...hated to come home it was so beautiful..it is at present in one of the garden magazines...hosta's galore, she also does hypertufa and creates the most magnificent containers with miniature flowers and hosta's...didn't know there were miniatures???

Been working all afternoon and evening on Christmas Quilt blocks..got the ones I was behind done, now working on the July ones, shucks, still have quite a few days to finish those don't I???? might try for tomorrow IF I get up early..

Nice garden pics, Betty. I have a lot of minis. I'm trying to fit all of mine into a city lot and am running out of space.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Hmm, Ann is there a special place the mini plants are purchased from? love to make some hypertufa containers, from all I've read it's not that hard but you have to be patient, almost make them for next year...few girls will come over before fall and we'll get into it so I'll be on the lookout for the mini's..

Going to be a gorgeous day today..been up trying to get July's Christmas quilt blocks done, if I break up my day enough I just might do it...

Couldn't sleep, 5:30 am inner clock says 'up you go' so up I am...lol

Enjoy your day!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Betty - there are several good mail order places in Ontario - Goldenbrook, Hosta Choice, Shades of Green, Floral and Hardy. Check out their web sites. There's a thread with many pictures of minis (although also a few that are just small) at http://cubits.org/Hostas/thread/view/19187/ just to give you an idea what is there - I've posted pics of mine and others have as well.

If you get to Ottawa, I have a good hosta nursery 10 minutes away. You could also Google "mini hostas" and some sites will have a list. If you want additional pictures, the Hosta Library - http://www.hostalibrary.org/ has many pictures. And the American Hosta Society has a list on their web site as well.

Making hypertufa containers has been on my "To Do" list for awhile. Hasn't happened yet.

I'm up early to take the monthly dose of Actonel. Church isn't until 11, but I wasn't sure about that. This is the first Sunday that we worship at a new location (and time) while major renovations have begun at our church. We won't be back in our building until late November (we hope).

Looks like a lovely, but WARM Sunday here. I hope you all enjoy your day.

Victoria Harbour, ON

We'll have to edge each other on and learn from each other re the hypertufa containers...lordy I sure loved Jane's garden with them in, in every little nook and cranny there were some..bet your gardens are outstanding as well Ann...

You just don't know Ann, could go and pick up what I need to try a few..learn from my mistakes and then when the girls come I'll be a pro!

Just think how lovely your church will be just in time for Christmas...you'll be playing and singing the Lords' praise!

Thanks for the links..

st.george, NB(Zone 5a)

Thanks everyone for the introductions.
HOT in my neck of the woods today with chance of thundershowers so the humidity is high though that is pretty much the story in NB on any given day.
Hypertufa was on my list of things to try as well - think I may have the stuff to do it in the basement somewhere. It was supposed to be a winter project but.....
Just making hummingbird food now - those little things sure can eat a lot!

Victoria Harbour, ON

My feeders need to be filled as well, better go do it..not as many as there normally are...

It's absolulety gorgous out there, my brother Bernie just came over to take measurements for a few projects I want done, wanted to help me finish that garden flower shed I started and need help putting together but still feeling yukky so asked if he could come one day next weekend..imagine, have to be sick to turn away putting that project to bed...

Think I'll go pull a few more weeds, have lunch and enjoy the day...

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Off to a walk in clinic early to get a quick check - bitten by something on Thursday on left arm and inner thigh and big swelling, itchy etc - the left arm is where I had lymph nodes removed so drainage system does not work right and would take ages to heal. SO on antibiotics and she gave me a cream to help with the itchiness- works good too!

Did a bit more shifting around in the front beds, had to remove some of the hostas I put in the north house bed in May, too much sun in the afternoon and replaced with a couple of Lady's Mantle from another spot which of course leaves that spot empty! But that is in front of the Mugo Pine and I will move some Jacobs Ladder and Troillius into that spot as soon as they finish flowering.

When I came back in the house there was a mouse running down the basement stairs! Guess I need to set some traps. I just got rid of a mouse which was in back of the kitchen cupboards - cleared out one drawer and put in a dish of poisoned grain , no sign of mice now for some days, hope that did the trick! Unusual to have mice this time of year, almost always in the winter.

Having a mainly relaxing weekend cause next week looks pretty busy.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Think I should have booked the 11 days I had off as sick days..went outside and thought I'd enjoy the afternoon, headache city and running a high temp so inside I am...Sailor wanted fed so downstairs I come, poor girl, I'm almost sure I fed her this morning...

The girls were gabbing about liantris...do any of you know that beautiful purple flower that grows in the ditches and marshes, gmt. issued a warning not to take and transplant...was that liatris??? bet I fibbed..help please..

st.george, NB(Zone 5a)

Think it is loosestrife that all the warnings are about.

cullman, AL(Zone 7b)

Betty no baby yet, I'll post for sure when that happens.. Were still usng my stepdaughters laptop and no only do i hate it lol I dont get around to using it to much cause shes done school now and shes on it all the time.. Hopefully it wont be long now till we get our computer, just seems something else is needed more everytime we get some money together...
