What's Happening in your neck of the woods?

Fredericton N B, Canada(Zone 4a)

The weather is perfect in Fredericton.30c but with a breeze.I'm sitting by an open window and the breeze is wafting a lovely aroma of the shrub roses in my garden,

Wow it did not rain today ( well I dont count the 15 minutes of spitting this afternoon. And although part of my day was occupied with a dog adoption in the morning and lunch and an afternoon chat with a friend from Toronto ( she was one of our foster homes when she lived in Calgary) there was still time to go work in the garden. Just weeded all the edges of the paths in the veggie garden and snipped some iris and pulled some weeds in other bed and did my usual wander around gazing because I still have a few plants to put in.

A clematis I thought was dead has poked up a shoot about 1 inch so I guess it will make it - if we just get some heat!

And I got the rest of the veggie garden planted! Probably just as well I did not get anything in early this year as I planned as it would probably not have come up anyway with all the cold weather.

It is pretty quiet here this evening - just Bailey and I!

Working a shift at LH tomorrow and there will be time to garden before and after. Must try to remember to take my camera and get a shot of me in full fig so to speak!
Don't think I have one since the outfit was finished. Yesterday I got a phone call asking me to come to the LH AGM on Monday evening to receive a special recognition award!

st.george, NB(Zone 5a)

agedgardner - you are very close to me. Fredericton is a lovely place, my daughter went to school there and I always enjoyed visiting but haven't been that way in a long time. Think we have a lot more humidity down here than you have there though most times you are warmer. Being closer to the shore we usually have a cooler breeze but not yesterday and supposed to be warmer today. Heading to the garden for my hour of weeding this morning then when it gets to hot I am going to Saint John to do some shopping. Have a nephew who is turning 16 and need to get him something - no idea what. Think I will take him along with me and he can pick something. Have a good day everyone!

Carol .. Fancy's Memory Box is lovely .. a wonderful tribute to a beautiful soul.
Congrats re the Award ^_^

Am thinking I MAY go on a search for 'Russian Sage' today .. I had thought about putting it at the end of the driveway .. just worry as in winter the snow gets blown back in that area .. of course, we have had minimal snows the last 2 years ..

Soaker hose we use in the veg garden in abd around the tomatoes and squash. Nifty stuff, and, as we are in the country and on a well, well, our pressure is not that great ..

Ann (Edmonton) good luck with the BDay .. sounds fun ..

We hit about 27C here yesterday .. but WINDY .. kept the bugs away, but attempts to sit and read the newspaper were failures .. however, the BIGGEST plus was, NO BUGS!!!!!

Ann (Ottawa) thought of you yesterday .. was walking the property when I noticed a BUNCH of 'Vintage Sports Cars' crusing on by!! MGs, Triumphs, Daimlers .. many many .. I see the club is having a gathering here.

Crows have me up, just in time to watch a rainstorm pass by ..

Have a wonderful weekend everyone ^_^

Sun is out lookslike a nice day.

Watching a wedding on the computer- from Stockholm, Crown Princess Victoria!

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

EXCITED and kinda dismayed all at the same time here .. one of last years Fawns showed up today, his antlers in velvet still .. AND .. his hooves in the veg garden !! Haven't turned 'the juice' on the electric fence around the garden as yet .. guess today was the harbinger of that happening.
My oh my he is a beauteous boy .. will attach 2 pics taken with my cell phone.

Have had a busy day slogging about in dreariness and humidity .. cloying about descripes it to a T !!

Can't do much outside as it 'mists' everyso often .. so .. I think maybe it's an afternoon to play cards ....

Both pics of the deer were taken at the back of the property .. maybe he was looking at the condition of apple trees LoL

Love to watch deer, as long as they stay out of my garden. We had our first fawn of 2010 show up on the 15th. That evening I got a shot of it as she/he lay in the grass...mama, not too far away. So adorable...

Lovely 'beasties' BUT .. so destructive to gardens .. not to mention motorists right now.
Have had many warnings about deer, moose and bear on the road ways here bouts due to the bugs !! Making me a bit nervous about the trip east to get the pup. It's an 8 hour trip along the shore of Lake Superior and right through some dense bush !!
Have yet to have a fawn on the property .. but, expect some soon ^_^

The clematis fence is looking rather nice this year at least on the east side - the west does not get as much sun so a bit sparse. There are two old clematis, blue and purple here and on the right side there are a couple of much newer and smaller ones in pale and medium pink, they are flowering but you cant see much of them yet.I keep this clipped back somewhat or it would be about twice the size!

Carol
That fence is looking lovely!
I enjoy seeing the photo's of the deer and the baby's are always so sweet. I don't have to worry about them eating my garden!
We are finally having warmer weather and today was about 29 with more of the same tomorrow. We are not quite as cold as Calgary at night so our veggies seem to be ok.
Party went very well and I've just stopped cleaning up. I am pooped! 13 yr olds have tons of energy!!.

I do want to comment on all your posts, been working so very hard..only 2 more days at home then off to Ohio and 11 days of vacation..haven't stopped since Friday..so please accept my apology because I read all your posts and do want to write a book on them but I cannot keep my eyes open, tomorrow will be another day with nothing to do at work so I'll post/post/post..

Does sound as though nice weather arrived in your neighborhood and that you've all been busy...

Waving to all...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Hectic morning...

Prayers for the family of yet another fallen soldier..heart just has to go out to them..

It's a gorgeous day out there, it's the kind of 'made to order' day..sunshine, light breeze, NOT a day to be at work..it's been so busy here, I'm not complaining because it makes the day go so much quicker..

Ohhh look at the deer, I've got a bit of bushland behind me, but, area is so built up that most likely they've better areas to live in...how wonderful..was just talking to my girlfriend Darlene, she said she was just working in her garden about 1/2 hr. ago, saw a shadow and there was a bear...not a baby .. so in the house she is..said the bear was more frightened of her than she was of it..

Sure wish Carol I could grow clematis..how pretty..you must so enjoy just sitting out and looking over your gardens..

Ann, think the thermometer reading on my computer is off..says 19 but I'm sure it's much higher than that...no chance of freezing your garden tonight..

Hi All ..

As usual .. busy, busy here .. Lorna has one more physio session this week (Wed) and she is discharged !!! Scary but, doable .. she can call or drop in anytime, but, she has all the skills required to get along with her prosthesis .. she is still only wearing the 'beginner' model .. she antes up to the more permanent one after a team meeting in 6 weeks ..
soooooooooo .. time to set up a schedule so that she will use her leg up to 6-8 hours a day .. it's a tough job I gotta tell ya .. I am positive I could never do it .. we also will keep up with the swimming, and, as it stands today, besides our property she has been asked to do 2 others .. UNREAL .. to see a disabled woman doing the extent of grass cutting and trimming and pruning that she does from an electric wheelchair and/or a riding mower .. course she's never far out of site and she has a cell phone with her at all times .. she is an inspiration ^_^

Weather .. crumb bugs, first thing this morning it was just awesome here .. in fact the A/C was on at home and in the car .. then when we came out from our swim .. WHOA .. who turned the sun off !!! Right now we're awaiting a storm.

Went to give Gord a hand with some felled branches from the evergreens this afternoon, as always .. I had to stop and yak .. felt something on my leg .. AKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKkkkkkkk .. was standing ON an anthill .. one of the lil beggars bit me too .. so .. he's laffin as I do my 'swipe off the ants dance' !! Bout fell on my kaboodle too LoL

Betty .. rather have deer than bear ANYTIME !!
Betcha you're excited re the upcoming trip south .. hope you have a MOST awesome time in OHIO :)
Our WEE trip east to the Soo is 8 days away .. getting prepared for my sleep deprival after June 29th!

Take care all

Amazing lady your Lorna is...survival comes out I'm sure when you are faced with such illness and you either give up or fight like the dickens and overcome it..am sure Lorna is pleased as well with graduating and not having to go back unless it's an emergency..been a long hard road for both of you..watching your best friend go through it is difficult!!

Yesterday was hot and humid as will Wednesday but today it's torrential rain..guess I won't have to water the gardens or the plant hangers before I go south, good Lord is making my load easier...

Was late last night before I called it a day, up early this morning and was smilling to myself as I left the house for work..everything I had to do to bring with me is done..pleased with the finished projects..tonight it's t.v. Bingo , want to win the $2,600 jackpot, wouldn't that be a treat for extra spending $$$..lol just maybe I'd better wait to win it when I return and am broke...

Recently we've had bear attacks, Suzanne's neighbor was attacked about a month ago, he managed to try and climb a tree but the bear did some snacking on his leg/arm needs several operations..

Guess they are out there, trick is not to come across one...

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

My godness we have had 3 sunny days and maybe another today! Must be some sort of a record this year! Poor folks to the south and east of the city,, state of emergency in many towns and cities. because of flash floods.

I actually bought a couple of plants yesterday. Ive been on the hunt for a couple of things I bought in May, want more of same, but cant find them now - then I came across a phlox named Orange Perfection and snatched a couple of them Had one a few years ago which did not survive and it is hard to find.I am using tall phlox as one of the main plants in the front flower beds I am revamping.

Last week I had a call from Lougheed House asking me to be present at the AGM last evening for a special presentation. So I got dressed up in some nice duds and attended! I received the Volunteer Award of the Year! Did not know they did it! The award is named after and was presented by a lady named Trudy Cowan without whose work on a Historical Committee the house restorations would probably not have happened. And the award included a $100 gift card from my favorite local greenhouse! Wow I can go buy more plants!!!!!!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS, always nice to have your volunteerism appreciated! can't get better than that, voucher for a garden nursery..I'd have been there when the doors opened this morning to spend it all...love the color, don't think I've ever seen that color, when next at the garden center in Collingwood, I'll check..love phlox..noticed a few of mine are almost ready to bloom...

You've got our nice weather Carol, we've torrential rain going on here...hasn't stopped since early morning...glad I brough an umbrella!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Congratulations on the volunteer award. Well deserved, I'm sure.

I'm back from a week in steamy Cincinnati for the Viola Congress. Amazing line-up of performers but poorly scheduled with things overlapping and many presenters had people leave their session to get to something else they wanted to hear.

Got work to do here. Church renovation is slated to begin next week and we have to get all our bells and equipment packed up and out of the church if we want to use them before December. A friend and I packed up much of the music this morning. I will store that and the bells. The rest of our equipment is being divided up amongst us. And the Ontario Hosta Society is visiting my garden with their bus tour on Saturday. Having been away for a week there is lots to do.

What a tremendous amount of work doing preparing for the garden tour...sure hope your weather is co-operating!!! wish I lived closer so I coulddo the tour as well...

You say 'steamy' Ohio??? yikes, better bring some light clothes with me..

Sounds as though the Church renovations are major if you are expecting to be out at Christmas..do you have another facility or sharing a local church in the meantime?

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Betty, yes, likely light clothes would be in order. Mind you, Cincinnati is about as far south and west as you can get in Ohio.

The church renovations are 2.1 Million $ overhaul of the Christian Education wing which is nearly 50 years old. The sanctuary was built later. It has failing plumbing, electrical and heating systems, no insulation (we are heating the whole outdoors which is expensive, not to mention environmentally insensitive). It will be gutted. New, relocated washrooms; new, relocated kitchen, hopefully w/o mice; new elevator to get people a half flight up or down from the sanctuary level. New, relocated staircase for better traffic flow.

There are diagrams of the changes at: http://www.emmanuelunited.ca/_pdf/schematic_1.pdf There have been a few changes/deletions to cut costs, but what is shown, is essentially what will happen. EVERYTHING has to be taken out of the building or stored in the sanctuary which will be sealed.

We cannot worship there because there will be no functioning washrooms, etc. until the construction is done. For the summer we will share services with an Anglican church down the street and in September, we will worship at a larger United Church from which our church sprang 51 years ago. I don't yet know whether we will be able to store our bells and actually practice at the other United church because it's a very busy church. So some things are still up in the air.

I've done nearly no gardening today and have a meeting tonight. Bad!!! I DID take my weekly, or near weekly garden photos and pics of each hosta.

Have no food in the house. I should also find the cards, keys, misc. that I unloaded from my wallet before travelling and put together a shopping list for after the meeting. Good thing local store is open 24 hours.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Well talk about surprising, we just had a 5.5 earthquake, can that be so? some buildings in the city were evacuated just incase...now that's rare for us isn't it...they did say we'd have a bad storm this aft./early evening and that we might get hail and high winds, but they forgot to mention the earthquake..lol

Another few hours and I'm off .. looking forward to it...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Ann, said it was felt in Ottawa and as far north of Sudbury and Timmins, "M" how about you..

Hope you are all ok...

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I recall a couple of slight earthquakes when I lived in Ottawa. I think there is a fault line running thru the Ottawa Valley. We have a several here in Calgary since I moved here 25 tears ago but it is pretty rare.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Definitely 5.5 and the epicentre about 50 km from Ottawa. Felt lots longer than the news reports are saying. Gov't buildings were all evacuated. I heard, but can't confirm, some stories of cracked windows.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Quite a few building and malls evacuated as well just to make sure no structural damage..glad you are ok Ann

Didn't realize that Carol..

Finally home after having a Thallium Stress Test ( Thallium is a radioative material) This is part of my cardio work up related to my strange episode after the Gen. anaesthetic in Jan.
So I could not eat or drink for 6 hours, go to lab at 9am, have IV put in ( thats always an issue especially if cant drink) then hook up to EKG and on treadmill- want me to triple my heart rate and then at the high point they inject. Let them know a minute before if I need to stop! Sure! Anyway off we go and by the time my heart rate is up by 75% I am having trouble ( not used to all that exercise) and the doc comes over and they coach me thru another 30 seconds or so and go ahead and inject. and stop the treadmill. Thank goodness, I thought my legs were going to collapse!
Then on to the scan part of the test, lying -flat on back, arms over head, lst part 2 minutes, 2nd part 18 minutes. DONT MOVE! Sure! I did pretty good but at the end the tech said something to the nurse and she said DID YOU MOVE? Well ,sure not intentionally! Anyway she was able to adjust the pics so we dont have to repeat that. SO IV out and go home and come back at 1:45PM ( it is now about 1030am) and still dont eat or drink!
So home for about 3 hours, stayed uotside weeding most of the time so I was not tempted to drink and then back for another 18 minute test but this time had to drink two classes of water first which was a blessing! Didnt seem so bad this time since I had a chance to drink. Quick drive home (I am only about 10 mins away) and some food and drink .Feel much better now!
This is the last test then I guess I get to go back and hear iof there is anything wrong with my heart - dont really expect any isues but you never know!

Back to the garden! 5 sunny warm days in a row!

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Betty .. No 'shake rattling or rolling' here in TBay .. jsuta teenie thunder storm and some much needed rain.

Have been watching the newscast of 'the quake' .. jeepers creepers .. there was some damage to older buildings.
Lorna's folks felt it in King City .. lost a small china teacup that fell from a windowsill.
Lorna can remember an earthquake in King City in the 70s .. about the same strength. Right now her folks are a bit worried about the inclement weather on the way.

Jeez Carol .. quite the deal that thallium test .. hope the results are good for ya :-)

Off n runnin

~M~

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Just back in from out .. WOW .. talk about a change in temperatures .. ALL for the good!! The humidity has gone and it's clear and cool, for now.

When it started to rain Wed afternoon, I got the hanging plants (hoya and Pothos) outside for a much needed rinse off .. shazam .. I forgot about them !! Looked at them this morning while out with Lilly, doesn't seem to be any damage.

Off to have the car cleaned at a MING car care centre, a Xmas gift I haven't used .. good grief the sand and gravel on the floor is kind of incredible. Going to ask them to vacuum out my trunk as well.

Set the GPS up last for the trip east .. it's fairly easy to do, UNTIL, you'd like to 'add' things .. kinda think with all the controversy over cell phone usage in cars, that this little dealie should rank right up there. Useful tool though, also have a triptik from CAA .. kinda funny .. there's about 5 flip pages of advertsing .. then the ONE page with an orange highlighted line showing Thunder Bay to Sault Ste Marie !!

Coffee is ready ..

Have a super day

~M~

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Quiet here today ...

Am VERY disappointed with MING Car Care here .. told me an hour for the wash/wax/interior cleaning .. luckily my bud picked me up to go shopping, hadn't heard word 1 from Ming after 2 hours .. she took me back as she had an appt .. I waited ANOTHER hour, and then .. got home .. opened the trunk .. NADDA vacuumed, and, I had asked it be done !!!
Exasperated !!!

How'd everyone in the east make out in the storms ? And .. out west HAIL !!! We are sitting at 24C and sun .. lovely day ..

Take care all

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Another nice day here, got one more corner of the front yard cleaned up and a couple of things planted that have been sitting and waiting for some time.
Even had my afternoon nap out in my rope swing in the veggie garden!

One more corner to do - suckers around the Shubert Chokecherry. If anybody had warned me how badly it suckers I never would have planted it. Id love to take it out, would have to have the stump ground, not sure if they could get the equipement in the yard. Then Id have to plant another tree in pretty much the same spot.
MY peonies are finally starting to bloom.
Isnt this lovely?

Carol
That is a gorgeous color! I still love the fern leaf one you have in your back yard though.
We seem to be back to warm days and thunderstorm nights here. Some spectacular lightening last night with rain but not too much as I had to water a bit today.
Here is my front pots beside my front door which is right around the corner. I just noticed that I forgot an old pot that was behind the other and didn't see it till I opened this photo! How silly is that.
For those of you up here the Salsbury Greenhouse has a mini competition for pots....they want you to forward your photo's which may be used in a new container book they are putting together. I think you can also win gift cards for their place. That should feed my addiction.
Ann
OH NO it's sideways! Does anyone know how to spin it once you have posted? My computer just always knows that the photo should be one way or the other then Daves makes it sideways,LOL.
Sorry guys.

Thats lovely Ann- you do beautiful containers - not my cup of tea - this year mine are all pansies on the front steps and petunias around the back patio bird bath!

Didnt do much today, a friend came over in the morning and we sat and chatted and drank coffee for a couple of hours. I did a bit of weeding here and there but mainly just puttered. Got one more clematis planted- have another still waiting and have not decided where it will go!

My next door neighbor has been moved to hospice this afternoon. early 50's cancer all thru her. Husband has been on stress leave and looking after her past 3 months but got to point they could not give chemo as she was to weak so the end is near. No kids. Her family in Montreal , not sure if they will get here in time to say good bye. My SIL in Toronto is in a similar position but they have home hospice care as she wishes to die at home and her family all near by.

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Good morning folks,

Well, it's hosta tour day. The bus full of hostaphiles should arrive around 10 am. The garden is as ready as it's gonna get and it's not raining at the moment. We were out till nearly dark last night spreading the rest of the mulch. Once the tour finishes here I'll join the bus and tour for the rest of the day. DH will join me for BBQ dinner this evening.

Thunder Bay Ontario, ON(Zone 3a)

Ann .. I LOVE pots/container gardening .. and .. your container is spectacular (any which way you look at it)
Is that Dracena or Ornamental Millet in the centre ?

Carol .. I go to Hospice clients homes to help out and enusure they do get their wish of 'dying at home' .. so sad to hear about your neighbour .. never easy.
My 2 students that I am mentoring, have suprisingly had several classes re the 'death and dying process' .. when I was in training you dealt with it 'cold turkey', in fact, the instructresses would try to keep the students AWAY from the death bed .. silly as it's something nurses deal with on a daily basis.

Just guessing, but I has Betty flown the coop to Cincinnati ?

We have had MAJORLY incorrect weather forecasts here for 3 days in a row !! Rain, Rain, Rain was forecast .. and .. we got , SUN, SUN, SUN !!!

Have an UBER perfect weekend ^_^

Thanks Guys
Marilynn the center is a type of fountain grass, I don't remember it's exact name right off the bat but it seemed to be a different color than the regular purple fountain stuff. You must be an angel to be able to help in such a difficult time!

Carol, that is tough for your neighbors, I hope it will be as gentle as it can be and the hubby gets some support there. My Mom was there with a good friend at home when she passed and I know she knew that the family appreciated the support.

Been very hot here in the Southern Interior. Expected hight today is 30C, with more to come over the next few days. Flowers are loving the heat. Will be busy hydrating for sure. Here are some Blue Campanula putting on a show in my back flower garden. ^_^
