I would love some of those violets so far I have managed to kill all that I have planted jsut too hot I think. I still need to get the mystery crinum bulbs in the mail to you. I also think I can for sure send you one of these since I seem to have a lot.

Jules if you want me to send one to you I will. I am going to dig up the giant crinum this fall and will get you babies of f of that too!!

I think early winter would be a good time to get them started. Hard to keep anything alive when it is planted in this heat. Maybe we should have the roundup in late October. Better weather to transplant things for your and my area.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Where to start. How about with a I miss QG! I hope she is okay. I miss her. : - (
I'd love the plants/seeds, Sharon and Marie, and if you like Hibbies, I'll send you some of mine. The edible just put on one seed pod. : - )
I have the same problem with some of my hibiscus closing when it gets too hot.. They do fine if they get some afternoon shade though. They are kinda like those fuchsia plants. Two of which got fried in the over 100 degree heat. Those two were the most exposed to the sun, and one may still come back. We'll see how my little experiment works out.
Sharon, I'm sorry you'll miss the beach this year. I know you haven't said much lately about your DH is doing, but he is doing some good. I tell all the kids I see drinking a lot of those Power Drinks about what it has cost your DH. They quit drinking them around me at least. You also haven't said anything about your own health. Does the heat help it at all?
Living in the desert, it only makes sense to do what chores you can after dark. I'm not quite as hot as you and Marie, but I was when I lived down at the Salton Sea, and then when you add humidity, it was downright miserable. I was so relieved when they let us change into our summer uniforms. Shorts are way more comfy when it get's over a hundred and you chafe from the humidity. LOL!
Had the strangest tan that year, too! LOL!
Now I have a farmer's tan. Dark face and arms, legs catching up, and pale tummy. Got to work on that.
It's a gray morning at the beach. I'll have to take photos later to show how the flooding changed our beautiful beach from last year. It's still beautiful, but rockier, and not as big. We haven't been here in the summer for years, so I was amazed at how many people were here when we arrived. I was too tired to take photos, but the sand was covered with people and umbrellas, and awnings. I knew it would be a zoo. So far it's not too bad.
I woke up this morning because of the street sweeper. They didn't groom the beach as early, and they didn't even come up in front of our place, so there is a lot of trash still.
Surf is not that good so far today, but it looks like some great boogie board waves are waiting.
I do like to boogie board.
I'm still waiting for my Crinum to bloom. I saw the first Amaryllis (Nekkid Lady) shoot, just before I left home. Dillansnana said that she'd read somewhere that the best time to transplant the Nekkid Ladies is after the green falls off, and before they bloom. Huh? Somehow that just doesn't make sense, and I've transplanted a lot of them. Silly me, I love these guys, because they always bloom right around my Bday. : - )
You send it Marie, and I'll find a place for it. LOL!
I'm working on turning the area in front of the old cabin, into a cottage type garden. I'm hoping to get rid of most of the grass over there. Except under his hammock. If it was sunnier, I'd have DH turn that area into a veggie garden. Maybe behind the cabin. In raised planters.
Sharon, glad to hear about the updated drainage, but I guess they didn't plan on a tornado. Caliche is exactly like goat poop in it's ability to not let water soak in but rather run off. Nasty stuff to walk or drive over. Kind of pretty to look at, at least some kinds are.
I live and love my messy patio, I'm roofing it over with Wisteria. I have wire lines running from the edge of the porch to the GH, to the trees, and I'm getting ready to run some over to the tiny courtyard I've been working on forever. I want shade on the west side of the house. The trees help a lot, too, although, if I'm not careful they shade the pond too much.
Marie, I can't believe your Crinum are blooming already. Great photo, and it's so Pink! : - )
I've been collecting a lot of pink and blue flowers of late. I'm just a plant addict. If it blooms, or has variegated leaves or is just cool looking, I want one. LOL!
I really do push Zones, and am lucky enough, and patient enough to have the space to change the environment in small areas.
Marie, I heard that if you have a tree with Pine Beetles and you encircle it with wood ash, it will kill the Beetles. I'm going to pick a couple of trees that are just starting to get infected (if there are any, and there probably is.), and try this method and see if it works. This is costing us a lot of $$, and we're helping for one son to go to school. We make him pay for some of it. Gives him incentive to work. LOL!
Marie, it sucks not having electricity, and I bet that second floor is a real pain to clean with the heat collecting up there. My Mom told me that in the "Old Days", when she was a young adult, they'd drive across the desert at night. She also told me that my G.Pa made them put wet burlap across the window opens for what little evaporative cooling it would have. He also made sure they had plenty of water. I don't think my Mom was tracking anything but kids, and no doubt he was worried my Dad would feel pressed for time, so he just did it himself. G.pa was like that. My Step-Mom, showed me how to keep cool in the car by placing a wet towel around my neck. It might look funny but it helps. My favorite is sit with my feet in cool water. The dogs hate it when I take over their foot bath. LOL!
I miss you all, so stay in touch when you can. Hope you get your power back soon and didn't loose any food from the freezer or fridge, Marie.
Take care of yourselves!

When I go to the beach for my walk I take along a gallon Z-lock bag. I scan the beach for unusual river bed like rocks. I always take home one bag and place them in my garden. The grandchildren are going to pick them for me this year. I am a nut about rocks. It was always great fun because the little grandchildren would run up and say "Grandma, I found you this beautiful rock". I had one guy come up to me a couple years ago up by LaJolla and ask me what was I picking up. I said rocks and he looked at me like I was nuts. Well I have to get off this computer and get to work. See you all later.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

I love rocks too. my 18 yr old nephew goes fishing and brings me back cool rocks!! i love that kid!!

Jules it was not my house I was cleaning but a foreclosed house that was supposed to ahve the electricity on so we could clean. Thankfully it was only about a 5 hour job, because it was miserable!! I walked around with a wet t-shirt around my neck to cool off some.

Want to say more, but will just get this timely bit out. Sharon, DH wants to take our 16 YO DD and her friend to Vegas this week for a quick family vacation before her Senior year. Nothing personal, but my last stay there in 1972 was enough, but anyway.... The girls want to see Criss Angel and the Blue Man Group. We were looking at hotels where you could get a package that included room and tickets for a show and we could stay at 2 different hotels each of 2 nights to get the tickets. DD wants the Hard Rock Hotel for one night and the Luxor for the Angel tickets for one night. I freaked when I heard that DH had told her they could stay at another hotel than we do. Not just another room, but another hotel! AAAHHHH. StepDS said he would not even let his teenage boys walk unchaperoned at night. Anyway, we are changing that idea. I had no idea what I could do in Vegas. Neither of us enjoy gambling and there is just so much time you can spend wandering a mall. Too hot for the pool. Then this AM, reading this Forum I thought maybe you had some ideas (hotels, restaurants, things to do without melting) and maybe we could even meet each other. What do you think?

Lynda

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Jules, that is where we go to the beach. Just south of you I set up my umbrella on the grass with coolers, et al and the kids use that as base. I can bring my little dog there on the grass. We don't go enough, for my taste. I did notice the changes of the beach. They also used to have a lifeguard platform right there where the stairs came down and that is one thing I liked about our location. Yes, we need some kind of overhang in our back, west facing yard. I have some trees out there, need more and an awning. I like those things made from canvas sail cloth, but with our wind.... LOL Farmer's tan. Yep. And white feet from socks. Can't stand to get my feet dirty, so wearing sandals around here is too yucky. Beach makes more sense than Vegas this time of year, especially. Back in '79 my sis and BFF were camping for 2 weeks in NV, UT & AZ. We were driving a little Datsun (boy, does that age me) hatchback and with our big load of large canvas tent, inflatable boat and all the other stuff for our trip, we were afraid to run the AC to stress the car. Even at the campsite we kept our tshirts wet and in the car we always had a gallon jug of water to douse ourselves. We also put ice cubes in our undergarments our swimsuits. While staying at Lake Powell, we would go into Paige in the afternoon and hangout in stores, even if to just read labels to be in AC.

Sounds like life in the desert all right. I've been missing you QG, and glad to know you are okay. I'd kind of like to see that Blue Man Group. I can watch Cris Angel on TV. Even escorted, on our last visit to LV, my then 16 and 14 year old boys were accosted by people on the street who gave them pornographic flyers of services available. BTW, I confiscated all those flyers upon our return to the hotel. Watched them kids like a mama Wolf, looking to protect her babies, I did. Sad thing is so many people will prey on young people.
I don't blame you a bit for wanting to stay close the girls, but truth to tell, they can see those shows better closer to home. Probably cheaper to drive them to the beach every day for a week. Or get in early to a state park for camping out. They have to leave some sites available for drive up visitors. Lots of nice camp grounds around too. Take them up to Mt. San Gorgonio. They'll like the mountains or even to Idyllwild for the day.
I like to collect the rounded pebbles too, but we lost so much sand from the beach, there be rocks close to shore. I'm going to have Jonathan bring me my long handled wet suit so I don't get too bruised.
Still very nice and gray outside, today.
When I lived up your way Sharon, I'd wait for a good gully washer then go down to the Carson City River, and look for arrowheads. We found a surprising amount of them, and we got to get wet. I don't know if you can still do that or even if you have any natural rivers in that area. But rocks are always good. I'm still in shock that people actually pay for them! I used to bring my surrogate parents cool rocks for their shade garden. They always liked them. : - )
Don't badmouth Datsun's. I used to drive a 1975 Datsun Pick Up Truck, with camper shell. The nicest thing that mechanic would say about her, cause she wasn't pretty, was that she sure was rugged. I loved everything about that truck except the lack of A/C. I was bummed when the idiot next door to YB#1 put sugar down my tank. Oh well, she was a good truck. A good war pony if you will allow me.
The only thing that would make that trip in '79, sound worse would be if a teething baby kept you awake all night long. That happened to us once, and we vowed never to take a teething child camping again.
Then again I was crazy enough to go to the Edwards Airforce Base with my YB#2 in tow, to watch the Space Shuttle land. I used to go to every landing up until I had kids. It gets really hot too. Some TV station was walking by while I was lobbing a water balloon at one of our companions. They asked if I'd mind doing again so they could catch it on film. I of course, (snicker), was only too happy to comply. LOL!
You all be careful if you do go to Vegas. Sharon help QG out if you can. You know all the good family type places to stay. My brother always stays at Circus, Circus, and if they want to go somewhere else they walk. Usually they just stay inside the hotel, and finish their journey the next day. With four kids of varying ages I don't blame them.
Take care you all!

Lynda, I do not go near the strip. And my Granddaughters are 19 and 17. They live in Las Vegas. The 19 year old is a Sophomore in college. The 17 year old is a Senior in High School this coming school year. They are not allowed to go near the strip without an adult. There is no way I would let them stay at another hotel. That would be like sending baby quail into a back yard with a coyote.

When are you coming into town. We are in a heat wave and it was 100 degrees at 9am this morning. The beach makes more sense but I know all about teen age girls. I took the granddaughters to Phantom of the Opera and they loved it. Have not seen the blue man group, but DH and I saw Jersey Boys for our 35th anniversary and loved it. I think we have been to the strip about 1 time a year. Most of the night clubs do not open until midnight. So they are not trying to attract us old folks.

The Belligo Hotel has the Chula Chandelier and right next to that is their garden area that is changed with each season or holiday. We always take the grandchildren down there for the Christmas Display.

Hard Rock is a very racy place for any teenager. Actually, Las Vegas is to racy for any teenager. We live here but we very seldom go in that area. It is a great area for 25 to 35 year old young individuals and that is who they are marketing to.

You must realize that the majority of families that live in Las Vegas, do not go to the strip. One reason is the majority cannot afford it. I will D-Mail you my phone number.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks Sharon! I worry about our kids. If it hadn't been one of those deals where DH's BFF hadn't shown up with his family and the only way we could get together was to drive to Vegas, which is a lot closer than Malaysia. So we packed up the kids on the spur of the moment and went. As I said it was very educational for everyone. Very expensive too.
I remember telling DH's BFF, that the best place to eat in any resort type town was near the College/University or near a Hospital. Lots of restaurants owners around those places, and they know their clientele can't afford expensive meals.
Isn't there a nice water park in LV, Sharon? I know there is plenty to do off the Strip.
Hope it works out, and if it does, LMK before you leave QG. : - )

Water Park Closed. I would go to Red Rock Canyon and see the beautiful Red mountains or go to the Dam and see the wonderful fly over they are building for many millions of dollars but that is not what teenagers are going to want to see. But it would probably be good for them for their parents to take them to the Hard Rock pool. They would see what they are up against in this world. None of the guys have body hairs and none o the girls have the bodies they were born with. Why do I know this. Photos. LOL.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I love the Geology and petroglyphs at the Valley of Fire, but the kids probably wouldn't like that either. Sigh.
Sad to hear about the water park. If ever a city needed a water park it's Vegas.
I'd love to see that flyover my own self. : - )
Remind me not to ever go to the Hard Rock Pool. I prefer real people, not plastic people.
Guys with no body hair, Yuck! Unless they are professional swimmers or on the swim team in school they don't need to get rid of their hair.
As for "enhancements", double yuck! I'm not going there.
I'm all for plastic surgery to correct birth defects, wounds, and burn injuries, but when it's just to improve your outward appearance for vanities sake, I think it's foolish to subject your body to that kind of trauma.
All of those "elective" surgeries can be life threatening.
Okay, let me stumble off the soap box.
I hope the girls have a fun, safe time in Vegas.

Just got home, seems like it was a week, not 2 days. Sharon, I feel so badly we were not able to hook up. It seems my family lives in chaos and pandemonium and it was no different in LV! Two hotels in 2 nites was crazy. We found the Hard Rock Hotel to be a lesser hotel than THE Hotel at the Mandalay, but the girls loved the HR and all it's memorabilia. We all enjoyed the BlueMan Group. GREAT show. Sharon, I know you were telling we about a visit here next month, but did not get it all since I was still on the floor from tripping, falling and hitting my head on the nightstand. From the pains, I guess I twisted my right angle in tripping, landed on my left knee then probably my left hip hit the floor about the time the left side of my head hit the edge of the table. LOL, what klutzes our family members are!!! Since I sleep on my left side, had to get up for some aspirin, but at least with the knot on my head, I have an excuse for my insanity! Never got to the Bellagio either, oh boy. Too dark to see any garden damage. 28 yo grandson stayed in house to care for dogs, cat & rabbit and he said big dog Tipper (44 lbs) NEVER went outside!! Just hid or refused. Don't see any big spots, just the usual small dog stuff. He said my shadow, Smore the chihuahua would spend hours waiting at the gate before she would come in. And Dyem, Ariana's Miniature Pinscher was just a little whore and loved on Michael and snubbed Ariana when she got home! Here is a picture of Smore.

Don't feel too bad, QG, I never managed to get together with either KC or DP while I was in O'side. I really wanted to, but as you say, kids do complicate things.

Your friend Smore is sweet.
Since I returned home, I've had a kitty contingent surrounding me, if not attached like a dryer lint sheet to your clothes, ever since I got home. It's been kind of nice.
It's going to take me some time to get my garden back to where it was before I left. Sigh.

My son was in a serious car accident over the weekend , it was the worst weekend of my life. One boy is still in critical condition. If any of you pray please pray for them. My son and the driver are home now.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Marie,
I am so glad your son survived, and I will be praying for them.
I am so sorry for the stress you are going through, and hope that your son recovers quickly, as do the other people involved.
Even though your son and the driver may be at home, they will need some emotional support. I had nightmares for months after our car accident. Not to mention panic attacks.
Please give them a hug from me.
Marie, don't know what I can say about kids, except that thank the Creator that they are loaned to us so we can love them.
That doesn't mean you can't get on their case if it's merited. I'll back you up!
I feel selfish saying that I'm glad that your son wasn't seriously injured, but at the same time I feel so badly for the kid who is still in serious condition in the hospital. His folks must be going through Hades. I'll include them in my prayers too.
You hang in there, sweetie, and if you need us, don't hesitate to call or dmail.

Sharon,
You should know better, kids never listen to their parents. Besides, I'm the one who suggested it as a lark, several years ago. I thought it'd look neat being half black and half red. : - )
So when he was away at school he dyed it black with the help of the Dean's wife. Too funny! It''s his hair let him do what ever he wants with it. I hope he inherited my hair follicles, and doesn't go bald like his Dad and Cousin have. : - (
He does tan, but he is a paleskin, and even when he tans he never gets as dark as even his Dad. They both turn a strange shade of red. While my YS and I just get browner. I don't burn.
Well, I might if I was stupid enough to stay out in the sun too long. I love to soak up vitamin D.
I just can't sit still while I'm doing it though. : - )
I am very proud of this photo. It is of a hummer (bit blurry but they are as fast as a speeding bullet), who was feeding off the Lions Tail plant I was given at the RU. It was such a cool photo I just had to share it. I have scads more, and as time permits (ha!), I'll be posting them.

I kind of like colorful hair on kids. I like them when they express their individuality. It's their way of rebelling, I guess. Some of the tattoos I've seen really are body art. Some are yucky. I find it interesting then again, one of my friends has taken it to the point that he has tattoos all over most of his body, and some "modifications" made.
A lot of people are having tattoos done to Memoriaize a lost loved one. Most kids sport some kind of "body art" these days. I have my ears pierced twice. : - )
I told ES about everyone preferring his natural hair color. He scowled at me.
On the other hand one of his friends is totally into techno, and I'm encouraging him to use color streaks in his hair. Not just one color, but a couple of complimentary ones.

Well, I had a little thing to hold over my son's head. Money. When he was in college, he came home for the weekend with an earring in his ear. You must remember this was over 20 years ago. I did not say a word. All I said is please do not let your grandfather see that. The next morning he came downstairs for breakfast needing money. I said, I am so sorry, but as long as you have that earring in your ear around me, no money. Well that did not make him happy but by the end of the day the earring was in his pocket and I gave him some money for the night. When he went back to college he wore it for about another week and then tossed it because it was just not his style.

He brought the story up last Christmas. He said, I cannot believe I put an earring in my ear. What was I thinking? We all laughed. I had the same response to him about a motor cycle. Now he tells everyone, not to get near a motor cycle because of all the injured he has seen in emergency from crashes.

I have not changed much but I keep my mouth shut. If they are not my children, it is none of my business. Even if they are my grandchildren but so far so good.

Jules, at least you do not have your nose pierced. Two is normal now. You need to add about 5 more to be on the "Edge".

Love you guys and all our children and grandchildren will survive this crazy world. Hair and tattoos is not their biggest thing to worry about. Love your hummingbird. I have one that sits on a wire cage around a blueberry bush in a very large pot by the back window of the laundry room. The door to the outside from the laundry room is also glass. So he either sits on the wire or flies at the window when I come into the laundry room. He is there every day. I have named him Franklin. Later.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

My son tried a couple of those extra piercings, none of them except the ear ones lasted more than a week.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Marie, good to hear from you. Piercings can be extremely painful. At least these days they don't use the same needle over and over again. They usually use a thing that works like a nail gun, only much smaller of course to put them in. Kind of like what they used in the 60's to give us all those chicken pox vaccinations.
I seldom wear earrings any more because I do have metal allergies, and they always get infected. I still wear them to Pow Wow, and then deal with the infection when I get home.
Hot already hitting triple digits for the 3rd day in a row, which I don't mind, but my plants do.
Then I'm still transplanting a bunch of fuchsia's into the ground or into pots. This weather ain't helping. I pretty much gave up on my veggies. Still have my fruit bushes though, and Stater Bros. had grapes in pots yesterday. They already had grapes growing on them! : - )
So I bought two pots to get my ES started. He wants to fix up the old grape arbor his G.G.Pa had on the south side of the cabin. I told him he had to do the work.
I did see the road runner in the orchard today. I didn't have my camera on and by the time I ran and got it, Mr. Road Runner was long gone. : - (
Glad you didn't melt, Sharon. I hope your iris garden is beautiful this coming spring. : - )

SW-I went out about 10:30 to take dogs out and decided to water side yard and strawbales (had done front in jammies @5:55 when dogs went out then). Woohee. Muggy mess of weather out there! I come in dripping like a fish and DH, sitting at computer under fan, only wearing shorts, with AC vent behind him says "it sure is a nice day, not too hot, think I'll turn the fan off!". My thermometer, in the shade on the porch, says 102 and down to 30% humidity now. Last night it was hard to sleep as we do not run AC 24/7. My family in Dallas don't even know if their windows work as they have a controlled climate all 12 months. Not here, I go around lowering and opening windows, blinds, shades according to temp and sun.

Yes, they have those guns for peircing, but DD does it herself on herself (including tongue) and on others with needles. She does buy and use fresh needles, of different gauges. I am satisfied with one hole in each ear and hardly wear earrings any more. Used to wear all sorts of big ones and still have them.

Beach? Sounds absolutely divine. Only took kids once this summer. DD never got the kids together like in prior years. I would bring 2-5 kids, fill the bread bag with PB&J sammies, the cooler with drinks, the trunks with towels and boogie boards and try to get the crew outa her by 9 so we could get parking. They would all be asleep on the way home... Here it is hot and they are back in school.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Hot here too, QG. We don't run the AC 24/7 either. I purposely placed the house so as to take advantage of our afternoon breezes, and the shade from those trees I planted.
Found out the kids started back on Monday. Just don't know what to do with myself, now that I don't have kids to drop off and pick up from school. I'm sure that I can get used to it. : - )
Was in pain most of the night, so I didn't really sleep. Then I overslept. My poor babies! : - |
So I ran outside in my jammies, at 10:00 in the morning and am watering things that should have been watered earlier. Oh well. DH is going to put drip in so I don't have to water so much by hand. Yippee!
According to the weather reports, we should start cooling down tomorrow, which will be a blessing for some of my poor plants. Sigh.
WIB!
