Seedling blooming in Arcata, CA

Arcata, CA(Zone 9b)

Been raining a lot here in Humboldt Co. We are already 120% of rainfall. Roses are not blooming, (Rose show this week-end) irises just finished, a few lilies bloomed so far. (Dolly Madison, Lollypop and a few LA unknowns) A few days ago I saw L. Lankongense blooming. Planted from seeds 03/08 but it bloomed last year. 2nd year bloom.
I purchased several new lilies last year, but the rain is causing problems.

That is GORGEOUS! I buy it in a heartbeat ~

Willamette Valley, OR(Zone 8a)

Beautiful Mike! We're drenched too. By tomorrow we expect to have received the June average total. I noticed some birds bathing in the middle of my neighbor's lawn.

I have miniature roses blooming and 2 lilies, a noid and Soiree. I don't like taking my camera out in the rain so it will have to wait. It looks like most of the rest of the Asiatics are several weeks from blooming...

Bummer having a rose show and no roses to show :-(

Arcata, CA(Zone 9b)

Yes, the rose society met last night and felt the same way.

Detroit, MI(Zone 6b)

Beautious. I think I will have some of those this year, eventually.

By seed you are meaning the black things above the leaves against the stem???? Today I dug up all my seedlings that have sprung up around larger ones but are under my peonies in the same bed so they were real week & spindly...my thought is to put them all in a pot until fall then transplant them into a new bed....my question is what type soil shall I use & how deep??? Thank you for the help & your lilies are just beautiful!!!! Deb

Arcata, CA(Zone 9b)

"black things above the leaves against the stem" Are you talking about what you see on tiger lilies? These are from seeds I purchased/gift or crossed myself. Normally brown and flat. See photo

Here is a photo of the orange tiger lily. If you check the stems you will see small black "seeds"(bulbils) growing. I hope the group will agree.

That's a nice pic of bulbils.

lewiston, ID(Zone 6a)

OK, those are what I was talking about...what do you do with those? Deb

Detroit, MI(Zone 6b)

You can "plant" them, (maybe cover them with a small amount of regular soil), or let them fall where they may. they will send down a shoot and start forming a true bulb. It is much easier than germinating and planting seeds and I am told you end up with a bloom a year or so earlier too.
I have never put them into a pot but I suppose potting soil would work. Mnorberry, have you?
I currently have the pale yellow variety of L. lancifolium, (formerly L. tigrinum), in bloom, (var. flaviflorum), as well as the dark red L. leichtlinii var. maximowiczii which is a variety of the brighter yellow L. leichtlinii, which may be blooming today. Here are some photos respectively, from last year. The first one is L. lancifolium flaviflorum, which also has bulbils.

L. leichtlinii var. maximowiczii, on which I have also seen bulbils, (which may imply that what I have is not a pure bred species but may have some L. lancifolium genes in it. The two were cross bred to produce a hybrid known as Tigrimax)

L. leichtlinii. Last year I had a blind stalk, (no flower), which produced two huge bulbils, which lends credence to what I have heard, that many species may form the occasional bulbil but L, lancifolium always does.

Thank you for the help and these pictures are just magnificent!!!

All my seeds are first planted in 1 gallon plastic containers, then after approx. a year I transfer 3-5 to another 1 gallon plastic container. When they finally bloom I mark them by color, take a photo and then after they finish blooming that fall if I want to keep it I will place in a gallon container by itself. I have a space problem (most of my ground has Beared Irises) and I have a lot of day lilies seedlings, so I place everything in 1 gallon containers. Here is a photo of some lily seeds I planted last year and will separate this fall. I got them from pardalinum. Its people like her and magnolialover that has help me solve/answer many of my questions.

Update on Trumpet x Aurelian from seeds. Here is a group photo of this container planted from seed on 12-22-06. Some of the white ones bloomed last year. So far this year, I had 5 white and 1 pink bloomed. A photo of the new bloom of pink see below in next section.

mnorberry, I love looking at this tread. You have done such wonderful work. I'm still at the point to identify the store bought lilies I've purchased. I love what you have helped to create. Please continue sharing.

Niiice ~ love the contrasting pollen too.

Elgin, IL(Zone 5a)

Mnorberry, I really love the trumpet too. But I'm surprised that it is blooming so late in your warm climate. My trumpets bloomed a month ago. It's also nice that it keeps that beautiful deep color in your sunlight.

Christiana, TN(Zone 6b)

Wow. Those are beautiful. Glad I found this thread. I love the first pic and the pink one further down. Is the first one pure lankongense? Got to get me one of those.

Arcata, CA(Zone 9b)

DonnaMack: My trumpets are still blooming. The Trumpets TETRA'S has been blooming for about 3 weeks now. My Orientals (3 of them) Seedlings, Mona Lisa & Expression has just started.
Killdawabbit: As far as I know they are pure. Purchased seeds.
