Can I just add that I too would love to see a forum devoted to these much underrated but beautiful flowering plants.
I grow many different cultivars so it would be great to share info etc with fellow oleander lovers :0)

Scottsdale, AZ(Zone 9b)

I also would like to make a request for this forum.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

brical1 which ones do you grow?

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 10a)

Your requests have been noted (-:

Thanks for reaching out.

If you have a look in the oleander plantfiles I have some pics there http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1327/

I have been told there are many new cultivators that are amazing. but hard to find. Of course, Oleanders looks totally different in the South than they do in the Southwest. I think it is the humidity. We were driving in Texas and I told DH,please pull over, I need to find out what that beautiful bush is with the vibrant pink flowers. DUH, it was an Oleander. Did not even look like the ones in the dry desert. LOL....

Scottsdale, AZ(Zone 9b)

Hi brical1,
which of the yellow varieties would you say is the most fragrant? thanks in advance.

They plant Oleanders a bunch here in Southern California, specifically along the "freeways" in Los Angeles and on heavily traversed roads in Hollywood (I put freeways in quotations because in Rhode Island - where I am originally from - we call them highways). These flowers are always so beautiful and at times very fragrant.

At this point in time I only have the doubleYellow(sold here as Vanilla Cream) and seed grown single Yellow...the double has a strong vanilla/baby powder scent just like the old double white and double pink Splendens...the single yellow.. none that I can detect

Scottsdale, AZ(Zone 9b)

thank you brical1. There is turner's in the state of texas that have tons of oleander hybrids but unfortunately they won't ship to Arizona(my state). I am trying to get other double oleanders with fragrance.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Do they ship to Nevada?

Scottsdale, AZ(Zone 9b)

it looks like they do. They won't ship to AZ,CA or FL as their website says. I had called them few years ago and they were very sure that they won't ship to AZ. I did not ask about other states. Please take a look at their website.

Well, there is nothing saying they could not ship to me and I could ship to you. There are always ways around stupid rules....Just a little more shipping unless you want to drive to Vegas for a fun weekend and pick up your shipment. We have a great guest room that is free of charge to Gardeners. We live near Red Rock Canyon in a lovely home so you would enjoy the visit. Just let me know, I will help you out either way. We are both retired from JP Morgan Chase. DH is 77 and & I am 68 in August. Grandparents to 13 and parents to 4. Two of his and two of mine and two Schnauzers 11 years old.

Also I have some unbelievable plants in my landscape you would not believe would live in our climate. Sharon= "Mother Winter".

I have double yellow I believe is called "Sunshine". It is actually double off white in appearance. I also have a double peachy/ pink called 'Mrs. George Roeding'. I really love these 2. "Sunshine" does have a pretty smell. It is not a strong smell and I am not sure I would say it smells like baby powder. It is a very pretty smell. Picture of "Sunshine" below.

I would love to trade cuttings for other double Oleanders.

another don't know the name.

Edited to add it is a double variegated bloom with pink and white. I found it at an old homestead site. Absolutely beautiful.

I added these to the same link in the plant files as yours brical1. But they won't show up for 1 or 2 days. So I posted them here. ;o)

Hi Sharon,
billion thanks for your wonderful hospitality. I may be picking up your offer.
Hi Talia,
olenders are few plants that do well and absorb some of the industrial pollution. I am glad they are chosen to be around FREE WAYS in CA.
Hi Sandy,
the only oleanders I have with tons of fragrance are --double pink(got from Logee's) and variegated double pink. The fragrance is the same on both plants. Also have single flowers with slight fragrance(red, white and pink). One of my red is hybridizing and producing red flowers with white streaks.

Is it true that if you burn cuttings of Oleanders that you can be made ill from the smoke? I know that burning Poison Oak in a brush fire can be transfered to your skin and cause a rash...it happened when my youngest DD (5 YO) was to be a flower girl at her olders sisters wedding and she stood with her Dad while he burned brush...they both got the rash!! Jo

Scottsdale, AZ(Zone 9b)

I don't know JO. Never tried it myself. They are poisonous however.

I didn't realize that. That is interesting. Thank you for sharing.

Oleander should definitely not be burned.

Thanks, ecrane...I had heard that. Jo

Well today we are 110. Low tonight 83. Both records. I was misting the plants in the front landscape and was surrounded by Hummingbirds. "They were flying into the misting droplets in the hose water misting." What a delightful experience. I was misting the flowers because it was so hot and the hummers were just flying through the hose misting. I was so astonished that I do not think I will ever lose that moment of time in my brain. A wonderful moment. Thanks Mother Winter. Have a great day....Another story tomorrow about the Robins.

How true is the color of your Sunshine to the photo? The photo looks light yellow..

Sorry, off topic, but -- Sharon, it might not be the best idea to post your e-mail and cell # in an open forum on the internet, you might want to edit that post and remove them.
(D-mail is a safer way to go) Just a suggestion, it can be easy to forget that we really don't know who might be "out there" !

I guess it is more yellow than off white. I was not looking at the center just the petals in the sun. Hear is the picture of the oleander before it was cropped.
The picture is very true to color.

Does it ever set seed? Mine looks to be the same..even though I purchased my double yellow under the name 'Vanilla cream' I doubt that is it's original name. Many plants including Oleanders are often sold under a new name and this can cause confusion when trying to identify a particular cultivar. Nursery's /growers often reinvent plant cultivars when the original name was lost, never known or they believe it will sell better with a 'new' name.

No seeds yet but my 'Mrs. George Roeding' sets seeds. Not sure if they come true to form as there is a single "Little Red" and my Double Yellow all bloom at the same time.

I am trying to get over pretty much emergency gall bladder surgery but want to cut all my oleanders to around 2 foot tall. This way they can fill out more. But I want to be able to root all the cuttings to maybe sell in the next yr or two.

I have access to cuttings of the one pictured

I really want to find the variegated one with double pink flowers like the one above and Double Red one and the Double White one. I really love Doubles. After I collect those then I want all the singles. :o) I use to tell my late DH that I want one 0of every plant and 1 of every color....I am so addicted....

Scottsdale, AZ(Zone 9b)

Hi Ilovejesus99,
I am interested in sunshine only if it has fragrance. My nose can't smell mrs.roeding. I can give variegated oleander with double pink(talcum powder fragrance) in return.

Las Vegas, NV(Zone 9a)

Sandy, thanks for the heads up. I edited out private info. I know better than that.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

It has a fragrance alright. It is a suttle but beautiful smell. I can't find a fragrance on Mrs. Roeding either. I would love to trade Dmail me. It maybe a week till I can get them out as I have only been out of the hospital 5 days. But I got some boxes today.

Anyone have any double reds?

Any more updates on an Oleander forum?
I think all you fellow Oleander lovers will appreciate seeing this as much as I did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HiS8nlIh2Y

Yes it is beautiful but their ratings are terrible.

Scottsdale, AZ(Zone 9b)

Hi wormslovsharon,
I feel the same way about tyty nursery. Their ratings are awful.
Hi Mickey,
some one said that 101-alma school rd exit, east of highway have a row of double reds on indian reservation. i have not checked them out but FYI

That sounds like we need to go on a little adventure to check them out. I'm having eve surgery tomorrow. Nothing serious so I'm not sure when I can twist my husbands arm. He likes to hide so he doesn't get too embarrassed with my plant harvesting.

Here you go gang: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/oleander/all/

What I'd like for you to do is collect some threads from other forums that discuss oleanders. I'll get them moved over to populate the new forum.

I'd like for someone to come up with a description for me to post at the top of the page as well.

Enjoy!
