Most of the turtles I come across dive in the water way before I have a chance to see them. But this big guy could care less. When it finally deceided go in, it took it's own sweet time.

Yes it has a macro setting. But it's hard to get a close up with the auto focus. I take many pictures of the same thing and still don't get a good pic. I put my hand in a lot of shots for scale but it also help give the camera something to focus on when shooting small plants.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Nice turtle.

Thanks for the info. Maybe I don't need a macro setting then.

Here is what appears to be another kind of thistle. The leaves on this one are not prickly like the first one.

Here is a leaf close up. This plant is about 6 ft tall.

And here is a shot of the flower buds. I'm hoping I can get a shot of the flowers open before it gets mowed down like the one I was watching a few weeks ago.

Hi AJNTexas,

The small orange blooms, I believe, are 'scarlet pimpernal'. I grew some in my bed from seeds.
Where in Beaumont did you take your walk?

Do you know where Sanderson's Restaurant on Hwy 69 is? These pictures were taken in the field behind the restaurant and along the LNVA canal next to it. It's only a couple hundred yards from my house so I go there faily often. Unfortunately this area is under development and won't be there much longer.
