2010 Garden Photos - Part 11

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

My Karmina is struggling due to being planted with an ant hill.
I have had a killing program and they seem to be gone so its looking better. It was planted the same time as the one pixed today. Not even 10% as big.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

What a bummer! Never had ant problems with any of my plants.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Peonies......I was told they need ants to bloom. Old wives tale??

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Really?? Are they supposed to be pollinators?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes wives tale.... I looked it up last year... they will still bloom without the ants.. but mine do get covered with them

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Mine too...good to know I don't have to deal w/ants to enjoy peonies:)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I won't ever cut them and bring them into the house because of that

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

This was an underground colony of ants.
Ants are on Peonies for the sweet sap that exudes from the bloom just before it opens.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Just cut them then spray with water then turn them upside down and shake the ants out with the water. It seems to get rid of most if not all of them before bringing them in the house. Love them. Patti

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

I've got leaf hoppers instead.

Ugh, ants... I think they built my house on an ant farm!

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

I get these little tiny Psss ants every spring in the kitchen. I could always get rid of them in a week with Toro but they have watered it down. I have used traps and spray and just can't get rid of them this yr. BEV

If they're in the house the only thing to do is call an exterminator, they inject a gel into the wall where the ants are coming from and they carry back to the nest and kill the whole colony.

Thanks for all the nice comments one my pics, everyone! Looks like you all have more nice things to show off.

Victor, I must have that Koto no ito.

Jen, Eye Of The Tiger iris is nice! Is that a Siberian one?

Marilyn, you have some lovely NOID irises there.

Celeste, 'What Again?' is beautiful! Love that morel shroom, too. Herman's Pride is really nice, too. I thought I had gotten that, but turned out to be the plain creeping variegated yellow lamium, and that one takes over. Your Herman's Pride looks great!

Venu, love your shot of the rose in the last rays of the sun. I'm not wild about passifloras either, but that red one is stunning, as Celeste, said! I'd love a cutting too, if you can spare another.
