'Dr. Moy' ginger ...
Do I want to be black and blue?
Pretty pictures... too bad we can't smell them too! I have only had the white butterfly ginger to bloom so far, but Ken shared several this last spring and they are doing well.
Thanks, Sheila. My white haven't bloomed yet for some reason. Usually, they have started blooming by now. In Maui, they grow wild all over the place in the rain forest region and the fragrance is breathtaking because 100s and 1000s of plants are blooming at the same time.. I was thinking that maybe "Elizabeth' is the same pinkish blooming ginger that Ken needs to identify.
Hello Sheila, welcome to our Ginger thread, I mean Salvia. I really love the Zingiber malaysianum but it is rated zone 9 and I have enough trouble with zone 8 plants in zone 8. Red Ginger LIly is a common name given to Alpinia purpurata and you have a picture of a Curcuma with a red stripe, and there are several. If it blooms we may can id it for you. I have compared my noid pink to Elizabeth and only the color is close, flower shape and amount of blooms are very different. There is now several variegated Hedychiums out there but most are hard to find. Tahitian Flame was put in TC and is not that hard to find. If you get the chance, Nadine is starting back the TXRU at her house near Beaumont, starting Oct. 8. It is a three day swap and she has close to 200 Gingers so you should be able to see lots of them in bloom, good fun.
Ken, thank you for clarifying the ID on the Hidden Ginger, Red Leaf Spice Ginger, Red Stripe Ginger Lily (Curcuma zedoaria). I had left off the word "stripe:. I have corrected the name on the photo. I sure hope it blooms some year. I have it in 2 locations that receive different amounts of light hoping that a bloom would appear on a plant that is happy where it is..
Wow, beautiful pictures, Hazel! I had to laugh at one of them because it almost could've been my own yard--the coleus, curcuma, and the bush is similar to my beautyberry. I have all of those things together in a corner by the fence, just like your grouping. LOL. The foliage of my Pink Wonder curcuma is very similar to the one in your photo.
I am thrilled to see the photo of Elizabeth. I just ordered one from Nadine and seeing yours just made me more eager to get it.
Okay, back on thread. I love my b & b, and so do my hummers. But it does something kind of strange every year... it goes chartreuse, almost like it's chlorotic or something, when it gets hot. I have given it extra iron, but that doesn't help. It doesn't seem to hurt the plant, and it sure doesn't keep it from blooming, but it would be prettier if it were green. Anyone have any idea?
pbtxlady, thanks. That's funny about our grouping of plants being similar!
'Elizabeth' is a really great ginger. When digging around her last year, I accidentally broke off a piece of her tuber. I planted it in a container and the baby that it produced is now really large, She does not bloom well in complete shade. Mine receives morning and a little afternoon sun.
My B and B probably does the same thing that yours does. It is a beautiful green and now the leaves look "faded". I have often thought that when it becomes hot and I have to water it a lot that the chlorine and the fluoride in our water causes this to happen, Some of my other salvias are doing the same thing. I know that when I have to water my lawn a lot, the grass does this too. I have had the city water scorch my plant leaves in times past. My neighbor who has a swimming pool tested the chlorine level in our water 2 or so years ago because the chlorine smell was very strong as we hand watered our grass. It was about 7 times the strength recommended for swimming pools.
Don't use the Hidden Ginger, Red Leaf Spice Ginger, Red Stripe Ginger Lily, just use Curcuma zedoaria, then everyone knows exactly which Ginger you are talking about. It is easier with Brugs, most have names and the ones that don't are noids. zedoaria is a good bloomer for me, blooming every year. It is one that did come back this year but I lost many that were only planted last year and I lost some I have had for years, like Scarlet Fever and Aussie Plum. zedoaria can be lifted as soon as it has finished blooming and broken into very small pieces and replanted, then next year you will have dozens.
Curcuma Ladawan;
Becky. what big city are city are you near?
Me Sylvia?? 45 mins South of Lufkin.... 20 mins West of Jasper.... 1 hour North of Beaumont and 1 hour East of Livingston.... in the middle of nowhere..LOL... why... you coming??
Beck, Smockette here @ Sylvia's!!!
I had her pull up a E Tx map & just kept clicking the little hand til your 'town' came up. lol
I'm about ready to come see you or meet you in Livingston!!! When is their Trader Day this month? The 15th?
I love my B & B but mine didn't take over a 4' x 8' bed as I was told it would so when I was in Austin in Apr, I went out to Bubbles & she gave a few more. They are doing fine.
I got a good deal on a bunch (19-5g pots) of gingers. They have too much milk or cream in them to just call them variegated! Taking a bunch (not 19) to Modene's. Will try to post some pix when I get back home. Plan on taking several others that my Old-heimers has made me forgot the names of.
I, like you, enjoy my zero water bill but this well is never cheap to operate, especially since it was put in, in 1980. I think I have just about replaced everything in the last six yrs. Plan on replacing 200+' of PVC pipe with hose b4 winter.(crossing fingers).
OOOKK.. Linda..LOL.. well Sylvia is always welcome here too..LOL... you know you are!! Lucky you!! You DO have my name on one of them right?? I do want to see pics! You know I'll meet you in Livingston, or just come here will be even better. You can stay with us a few..lol.. better yet, Lyle's going back to TN week after next... LOL... I just wrote Sandi that I might be thinking of coming to Nadines. I've never got to meet her, but Sandi said what fun, so i think she's interested as well.
I have no idea when the trader days are there in Livingston.. I've never gone... LMK!
They are next wkend.
How many brugs does 'Lyle' want to get rid of? ROTFLOL
yep.. just answered your dmail. NONE..LOL.. he'd try to sell a half dead stick..lol.. but i cut him off. It's killing him since he's enjoying the Jasper Farmers Market... but he has a lil honey left and since he's NOT given me any of the brug sales, and he'll be in TN... that money will be mine!
Okay, NTL, with all this wealth of knowledge, about all these different topics, what is your decision about B&B???
Inquiring minds want to know!!! lol
:~)
Bought one and planted it into a new bed. It is not blooming as much as I expected but it is lovely and the hummers like it. Too soon to tell about it's wandering habit. But it is worth growing somewhere. If only I could get rid of the dozens of maypop vines that are all over...oh well.
BTW, I hope my ginger is as pretty as some of those pics.
C (NTL)
newtonsthirdlaw, maypop vines sure can be a problem. I have lots of native morning glories I have to keep at bay. I hope that your Black and Blue does well for you and that your gingers delight you with beautiful blooms.
that flower looks huge! at first i thought -must be from south texas with all the hummidity--turns out it's my side of town-=-very nice
It does look huge, doesn't it? I think it's just the way the picture turned out. It was nice-sized but I don't think it was quite as big as it looks here.
pbtx that ginger bloom is a delicious color...makes me think of Dreamsicles! :D
LOL--it does, doesn't it? And I agree, it's a beautiful, creamy color. I hope I get more than one blossom from it next year.
