Do I want to be black and blue?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Man Linda....I would be getting that thing fixed. We have had to repair several heads due to running over them with the car, or the lawnmower, another was hit with an axe! LOL! Anyway HD or Lowes have all the parts and there are videos for everything on utube.
I can't imagine watering the huge lot you have with hoses, but then you are younger than me.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

::waving excitedly at Beck ::
So, when will mine look like that? I did tell you it's Y-ed already, didn't I? I think it's going to be one of those that has a flower that's bigger than it is. LOL!

Plano, TX

well sheila my husband is wonderful in many, many ways---handiman is not one of them
and now we have a pipe that leaks so the plumber turned that off and anyhow it just never got done--
i move the hoses around like crazy!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

The hose hauling was taking the joy out of my gardening. So several years back when DH asked what we were going to buy for the house that Christmas, I told him I wanted a sprinkler system...never regretted it even in the repair phases. That next year I had back surgery...it was a God send.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Hello everyone!! Sheila.... I thought it was quite expensive, but i tell you I'd spend that same amount to have it done again. I love it that much!!

sylguy... I don't think it's a datura, I really think t;'s a brugmansia... I'll go out a take a better pic for you to see, and since last year it gave me long seed pods, like the brugs, I tend to think it is??

Pattie.... hey girl... your Tiger Woods is just about to bloom... LOLOL... so that means you have to come to ETRU!!! Lookie at that!! Girl... I am sooo shocked that all the brug cuttings were reduced to about 6".... only what was in the water when the breaker tripped in the GH, and soooo many tiny things have Y'd early, and bloomed... just like your baby..LOL... I'm not about to try and figure it out..I am lovin it!

Josephine... I am so glad she's doing well for you. I dug many "didn't know what they were's" for The Woodlands RU this spring, and I think they are the huckleberries..... soooo I have more

beck, your Brug is a Brug, yes.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Ken... I thought I knew she was..LOL... and you should know.. you and Maggie being the brug Queen and King

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Oh, I forgot you said that was a noid. I saw the white flowers and thought it was the Monster you sent a cutting from. The others I've gotten this year, from both you & Ken/Maggi, are all doing great. But that one grew several inches and Y-ed in (literally) a week. I was shocked! And thrilled. :) I've been growing brugs for 3 years now, and--besides my big Dr Seuss--only ever had something like 3 flowers.

Hey, Ken, you know that Tahitian Flame hedychium that I was grousing about elsewhere? It wasn't two days later before I was looking over the buds on my butterfly ginger, and found a big fat bud on the TF. It's very hot here, so I don't know how the flowers will look, but can't blame the TF for a severe winter and a very hot summer. At least it's trying. I'll send a picture if it turns out like it should.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Pattie... Monster White is right under this NOID for me in the blooming department! I doubt I'll dig any up this year, so I'll be cutting them all back near the ground come fall, and I'll have cuttings then of this NOID

Ken.. speaking of the gingers you and Maggie gave me last fall... they are doing sooo well!! Thank you both for sharing the growing conditions the gingers need, cause yours are doing great.

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

My gingers from Ken & Maggi are doing great too! I don't think they will bloom this year, but can't wait to see them next year.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

My gingers are coming along nicely also.

Hey.....I think this is a runaway thread! LOL!

My B & B.... there fixed it!

It's off the track again. Here is a noid pink that I just have to find a name for, it's just too beautiful.

my ginger have never bloomed--maybe i am doing something wrong--my mock orange never bloomed and my morning glory doesn't bloom

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Gingers here haven't bloomed yet but do show some blooms. Morning glory is still making vines and leaves too. So don't give up on them. I forgot about my mock orange...it is being overpowered by cannas I bet, need to check on it.

Ken...that is a beauty, what ever it's name is.

My mock orange hasn't bloomed here either, nor my ginger, but my caliche slows things down. My coral bean plant took a beating with the freezes and now is big and full like it used to be in Spring, and down in the middle, is a bloom head. Go figure.

To stay on thread, my new (as of June) black and blues are doing great and blooming well. I love 'em.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Ken... that is a pretty ginger!! I first thought I had one just like it, but mine isn't pink!! I am surprised it bloomed because I just got it in a trade this past May... planted the small pup and wow! Here she is:

Linda.. Ken is the one to talk to about gingers!! I had gingers... a few for 3 years and nothing, till I talked to him. Mine needed more sun

mine are in almost complete shade--

Austin, TX

beck, what a great shot, the light, the butterfly and all....:)

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Mine were too!! I have left the ones in the shade garden that were variegated cause I read if they froze back to ground level they wouldn't bloom anyway, and mine do. I really thought i had lost these since we got down to 12 degrees last winter 2 nights in a row!

beck that ostrich head is sooo cute poling up through the plants.

We got bad freezes too and this pot was around and hidden, but there was no room to take it in. It gets morning sun and even in it's heyday, never bloomed...I just like the foliage. Among all my dark green cedars, etc. light foliage is as good as a bloom for me.

Whoops, I forgot the pic!

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

TY Sylguy!! I can rarely take what I call a good pic... I am a night owl, and by the time I decide to look outdoors it's full sun!..LOL.. I love the yard art! Aren't you the same zone as me or or you 9a? Even Ken is 8a I believe and all his are in the ground.... right Ken?? One less pot to worry about!

BTW... Sheila.. I think we need our own thread... "The Runaway Thread"

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, I love b&b, and I love these ginger photos! Ken, you have to find out what that pink one is.

I have a pink one (curcuma) called Pink Wonder. It's new this year and I doubt it will bloom, but I sure hope it looks like that when it does.

Plano, TX

beck i have that same bird head--last year or year before we even had a thread about them--seems everyone got theirs at home depot
i get more compliments on those funny bird heads but i have never seen them again for sale --where did you get yours and have you seen any for sale this year?

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes I a, 8a and most of my Brugs and Gingers are in the ground and I lost lots of Brug, every Costus Ginger and most of my Cercumas this past Winter. On the Gingers I think it was being too wet more than the cold, what ever I lost bunches. The variegated ya'll have is a Shell and it blooms on second year growth, so you would have to keep it up during the Winter to see it bloom but it is grown mostly for it's foliage. We have had Gingers for several years but I really just got the bug year before last. I learned that Costus can be rooted easily with stem cuttings. I lost all that I had in the Grown, even Costus pictus Red Stemmed that we have had for years. From now on, I will take a cutting from each just in case we have another Winter like 2009. Also Curcumas roots are easily kept in damp, not wet peat over Winter. I will be storing them in small paper bags with name on the bag in our closet, just small pieces for backups. I did not loose any Hedychium, if they were healthy going into Winter so no backups.

pbtxlady, I do not have Pink Wonder so will be wanting to trade. I have not seen it's bloom but it will look something like this, this is Panama Purple;

Plano, TX

kenboy that is sad--to lose all those plants---i lost a huge plumaria but it was my own fault--it was so big and hard to move that i didn't get it into the garage in time and it froze
my none blooming gingers did make it -i thought i had lost them but i did not-just came up late
i did lose my fire cracker plants and not sure what else since the garden is always sort of a mystery to me "did i plant that last year?" "what is THAT plant and how did it get there?" "is that a plant or a weed?" etc

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Linda ... I did get my bird heads at Home Depot at least 2 years ago... maybe 3... dirt cheap..LOL,and I got 2. Love them, and wish I'd got more! No... haven't seen them again... sorry

Ken... I am so sorry ya'll lost some of your brugs and gingers. IF I have any you've given me or any at all, that you and Maggie are needing, I'll be more than happy to share back with you!! Please LMK!!

Pattie... that one I posted a pic off is a Curcuma... I am trying to remember these names..LOL

Austin, TX

beck, I'm 8b and was amused to see a transplant to Austin list herself as 8a.

What is TY?

plano, I lost many firecracker plants...the ones in pots, for good but my mound in the ground "fired" back up in random spots around where it was and I have a bunch of plantlets about 10" in diameter and standing only about 6" tall. I may move some.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Nice pic sylguy! "TY" is Thank You!! I LUV your stone!! We have a house in TN also, and have the limestone. I could kick myself for NOT over the years trying to bring back some slab limestone. I don't even have sand stone here....grrrr...LOL... and it's sooo expensive, and I am soooo cheap! Opps.. are we now going to stones... or being cheap??..LOL

Austin, TX

Alrighty then, I use THX......this thread is carouming around, but is that such a bad thing?

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Not usually sylguy.... but I have seen some take offense when their thread goes off topic.

Arlington, TX

Didn't know there were any rules about topics. I learn alot from discussions that go far afield. BTW, I got a ginger plant from the spring round up but it hasn't bloomed. It is in semi shade and gets good moisture but so far only leaves.
C

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

newtonsthirdlaw, started this thread and I believe she sad decided to grow one in a pot and most people who had an opinion, gave it. I would think it rude if it was taken off topic before questions were answered. OK now that has been covered, newtonsthirdlaw, what type of Ginger did you get? Let's see some pictures. If you just got it this Spring, this is a bit early for it to bloom.

Did any of you get any Gingers from the Nadine co-op?

Arlington, TX

LOL when it comes to gardening, no plant is off topic. I will take a pic tomorrow, it has grown a lot but is sort of spindly.
C

Plano, TX

i think it would be funny if everytime we went off topic we had to somehow relate it to the topic

once when i was subbing the class asked me to do what their teacher did -give the spelling test using sentences about a topic of the students choice

they chose a wrestler---stone cold or something like that--it was a fun and funny challenge

beck could tell about how the flagstone was sort of a "ginger" color

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

and it had lots of Black and Blueeeeeee.....LOLOL

Garland, TX(Zone 8a)

Ken, my Pink Wonders aren't spreading yet, since they're new this year. But I'll sure keep an eye out for any new shoots. If not this fall, surely next spring there'll be some. From the pictures I've seen, this baby gets really big. It sure is different from the hedychiums.

So, how does a person take cuttings? Where would you cut them? What's the best way to root them?

Plano, TX

beck that shows how much i pay attention to the topic----------i thought it was ginger we started the thread with!!
your right--it would be the black and blue we would have to work into our off topic topic!!

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Linda.... that is a good way for the kids to remember. I agree with Ken. This thread totally appealed to me cause I had a little bit of all of it, and still learning about them

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

My "black and Blue" salvia likes bright filtered sunlight. It is in a large container because I didn't want it to run. Being in a container, I have to water it more than if it were in the ground. I thought it had died during the winter when the lows were in the lower teens here. It was slow to emerge from its roots; however, it is now doing great as always. I moved it where I can see it more and now realize how much the hummers love the blooms. My daughter bought me some aqua globes and I'm going to place a large one in the container and move the plant to where it receives more morning sun because it is getting a bit leggy.

My variegated ginger (Alpinia zerumbet 'Variegata') only blooms on second year growth when we have mild winters and it doesn't freeze back or I'm able to protect it from freezing weather. It was so large this winter, I didn't protect it so it froze down completely. It is back up; however, it is slow growing. All of my gingers survived the cold winter whether or not they were in the ground. None were protected during the winter. Sometimes finding the spot where a ginger will bloom is tricky. Mine can't take full sun because they'll burn. But, if they don't get enough light, they will not bloom. They do well on the east side of my yard where they receive a lot of morning sun and no afternoon sun at all. My ginger lilies have never bloomed nor has my "Dr. Moy" ginger. 'Dr. Moy' is a hybrid of H. flavum and H. coccineum that was bred by the retired botanist Dr. Ying Doon Moy of the San Antonio Botanical Gardens. It is the only variegated Hedychium to date. "Dr. Moy" needs to be moved to where it receives more light. My white gingers (Hedychium coronarium) that Frostweed gave me have bloomed consistently each year. The only ginger that has died that I have planted is Black Ginger, Midnight Ginger (Zingiber malaysianum). I think that the tubers rotted. It only lived 2 years.

All of my brugs were protected during the winter with blankets and comforters; however, they all died back to ground level. All of them except one returned fairly quickly and are quite large again with several already having bloomed. The largest one that had the most protection and that I thought had died came up from the roots just a few weeks ago and is now catching up with the others.
