This is such a nice thread - full of lovely photos and snippets of folks' gardens. Thanks, Julie, for thinking this up.
WHAT IS IN FULL COLOR NOW-MAY 1-15
I had never heard of "tree heather" until Sharon's picture here... Beautiful!! My dh loves heather, I guess it's the scotch in him (the genes not the drink ;)) ... He also loves "trees"... So this would be like his perfect plant... :)
I love that tree heather also. I have a lot of heather and will have to get this one.
Julie and I bought the last two(tree heather) that Heidi had at Dragonfly last year. Perhaps she has some more this year. My mature one is probably 10 years old. Julie has one of the same age, perhaps we can talk her into posting her picrture too.
Pixy, I love your arisaemas! We had the wild ones in the woods when I was a child in Minnesota, and it was always fun discovering them. Another woodland plant I will have to think about adding. How do they fare with slugs?
Bonehead, I too love seeing the little snapshots of people's yards. I am forever behind in updating my database (which is the true reason I started the thread), but will be able to enjoy all of the photos over again when I have time to catch up! I am amazed by the variety of plants that our members grow, and have happily found my garden interests broadening in a big way since I have been participating in this forum.
Pony, your Vulcan is definitely an eye-popper.
Bea, your iris are lovely. I am not usually fond of the really dark flowers, but that black one is gorgeous!
I would highly recommend tree heather to anyone who likes heathers. I will say however, that you need to give them lots of room to grow. Mine is extremely happy, and I had to prune it significantly this year to be able to walk through the path beside it. Should have pruned it at a different time so it would not have cut off the blooms (you can see that the left side is kind of naked!), but didn't have much of a choice this time around. The good thing is that I have no question that it will be full white again by next year.
My tree heather is in full bloom right now, as is my Carol Mackie daphne in the foreground (such as it is after a rough winter... it is usually much fuller), and my wallflowers are still going gangbusters. This path is right outside my back door, so you can imagine the dreamy scent I get when I leave the door open right now!
Another view of the same area but further over to the right (can still see the tree heather and daphne to the very left edge). It is not "full bloom", but I think that the ranges of different greens in the gardens and woods are at their finest right now. I love the variations in color with so much new growth coming on.
Your garden looks beautiful Julie. Love your pond!
Thanks Bea. I am very fond of my little pond, but always long for a much more "neat and formal" one when I see pictures of yours and Pixy's. This one is fed from an underground spring and the level drops significantly in the summer, but the frogs and the dogs love it, and it fits in with my natural-towards chaotic gardening style, so I have never tried too hard to make it any more formal.
Neat and formal? My pond? Surely you jest! LOL!
I'm happy to say my tree heather survived! I've already killed one of them, so I'm glad the one I put in last year appears to be putting on new growth.
Julie, the arisaema's appear to be fine with the slugs, I never get slug damage on mine. But the voles do like them very much. I'll have to pull that large one out as soon as the bloom is finished and plant in gravel. It comes up way too easily to have many roots.
I pulled a slug out of the center of my Arisaema, where he appeared to be living. He had eaten his way in there . . .
Cute one willow!
