Round Robin Box on its Way!

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Hey Maria,

Not sure which gessie are you talking about. Can you find a pic of one?

Connie

Akron, OH(Zone 5a)

Probably something like this but I think I saw even fuzzier leaves somewhere...

That might be a Smithiantha. Karen, where are you?

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

That is a sinningia leucotricha. You can see more images of it here:
http://www.google.com/images?q=sinningia%20leucotricha&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi

It's a species sinningia. Most sinningia do not have the fuzzy leaves.

Fuzzy leaf plants include petrocosmea and chirita :)

Hope this helps,
Kim

Akron, OH(Zone 5a)

Wow, sinningia leucotricha is awesome, I want her! Looks like she combines a succulent caudex with gessie top, amazing! Didn't see fuzzy petrocosmea and chirita, do the cultivars differ in terms of leaf texture?

Thanks for the info ladies!

Maria

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Thanks so much, Kim!!! It is a very pretty plant, Maria.

Maria,
Yes cultivars do differ in texture on any Gessie. There are smooth, dull, shiny, hairy etc. in nearly all of them.Connie's sinningia leucotricha is much fuzzier than most Sinns. And very beautiful I should add!!
Leaf color also varies from nearly black to yellow green. You would probably love the velvety leaves of many Episcias, although again, some of them are shiny.
We all love these plants so much ,in part because there is really no color, texture, height size, or blooming time that we can't find in the Gessie family!!

also this sinningia is very hairy, can't tell much from this picture. It's sinningia florianpolis.

Well, it's a whole new world for me. BTW have anybody tried to grow mini gessies in the terrarium (or any glass container)? I got really big hurricane bowl/vase and started thinking about it. Any plant suggestion? I have a few Rob's mini leaves rooting but would really like to add something taller and skinny. Already thought of mini ivy but maybe I could find some interesting gessie? It could be really fun project and I'm so lucky to be able to discuss it with such knowledgeable gessie-lovers.

Hi Maria;
You can grow lots of gessies in terriums, epescia's love the warmth, also micro & mini sinningia's do very well in there, I am sure alot of others would do well also.

That is what I like about gesneriads...they are so different from each other. So much variety.

sinningia florianpolis..... I went to the Gesneriad Society convention in Silver Spring Maryland last July. They had a HUGE s. florianpolis in the show...I believe it was grown outside. It was about 2 1/2 or more feet across...took up a LOT of table space.

And the box is on it's way to ??????. Just wondering and getting anxious.LOL

I'm with you,Lou and am wondering where the box is. The last I saw it was leaving Florida and headed to Ohio and then probably to you. It was sent on the 15th so should be in Ohio by now I hope. I had a small order from a vendor sent on the 16th and it got here today Priority and I thought that was too long but at least it's here.

Columbus, OH

It arrived in Ohio yesterday, and is going out today. Sadly, there were a lot of AV leaves that were just dead, so I had to remove them :( On the positive side, it's going out with some episcias and variegated AV leaves and some strep cuttings. I am replacing the box, I think the post office must hire monkeys to bludgeon them or something.

Chicago, IL

Thank goodness the post office did not lose it for too long though they sure took their sweet time to get it to you Celene. It's too bad so many leaves were lost but I think that's normal for these that the things only make it through 2-3 people before it's too much for them.

But did you get anything out of the box? I hope you found something you would enjoy that was still alive.

Columbus, OH

I sure did~ Thank you to all of the generous swappers!

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Glad to see it "on the road again" LOL!!! Please share with us what plants you got, Celene :) We all like to know about the kept treasures.

Connie

Columbus, OH

LOL...I'm at work now, I remember I got the aeschynanthus, a leaf from a couple of trailers(I left at least one other leaf for other folks), a Kohleria and a Achimines. I think that's right...

I added in:

AV Lucien Croteau
AV Rob's Splatter Kake
AV Rob's Red Rover
Alsobia Dianthiflora
Episcia My Precious
Episcia Silver Sheen
Episcia Burning Ember
Episcia Canadian Cleo
Streptocarpus Bristol's Gun Powder

Oh, Celene...I am sorry!!!! It IS hard to remember when you're not there to see. LOL!!!!

Akron, OH(Zone 5a)

Got the box today, nicely packed and refilled, Celene did a great job! I loved the episcias and picked My Precious and Canadian Cleo plus streptocarpus Black Ace and Alsobia dianthiflora. Also will try to save a few AV leaves.

BTW I have a suggestion about AV leaves. It was LOTS of excessive moisture in the ziploc baggies, maybe because of heat or just long mailing time. So I wrapped every leaf in Kleenex tissue to create a barrier between the leaf and the plastic and also to help absorb the moisture. It could be easy to re-wrap too. So let's see if it's gonna help. Now I'll start to pack the box to get it ready for sending tomorrow.

Columbus, OH

I think packing them in tissue is a great idea. I think the moisture is from condensation, I saw the same thing.

Canadian Cleo will do better in a terrarium, My Precious will grow in a crack in the sidewalk, lol.

Chicago, IL

I once read that a woman from South Africa used to ship leaves to the US and they were fine only if they were completely dry and not at all wet. I know some seller put the wet kleenx on the ends of them but she said that was not good to do and would cause rotting.

I wonder it the baggies should be left open instead of closed or if that would cause other problems.

Akron, OH(Zone 5a)

I left the baggies open overnight to dry them out a little and hope the dry tissue will help.

Celene, these tiny ones are the cutest little things I ever seen!

Columbus, OH

I root them in bath salt tubes or McDonald's sundae cups, lol.

Akron, OH(Zone 5a)

BTW will they be OK in the peat moss for a while -- it was the finest medium I had on hand.

Columbus, OH

Sure, they'll root just fine in peat moss.

Seymour, IN(Zone 5b)

I received the box today. I found Silver Sheen, Lil Lemon, and Cotton Candy episcias and Splatter Kake AV. I put the rest wrapped up in my fridge crisper until Saturday AM. I will mail it then and it should be to Bonnie on Tuesday that way. There were some stolons and leaves that had rotted and a streptacarpella that was completed dried out and dead as a doornail. I removed them and there is still a good variety left. Thanks for organizing this RR. I hope we do another one in the fall. It is a great way to add to our collections and costing only postage. Lou

Hi All;
Got the box this am, sorry to say, alot had to be dumped, Some were mush.Buttttt, i filled it back up.lol The only thing i kept, was alsobia cygnet.I had alot of the other things that were in the box. I do have access to alot of different gessies, i am lucky that way.So anyway it is on it;s way to jan in michigan.Maybe next time we do a box, it should probably only go to maybe 3 to 4 people ,seems like the longer the box goes around the more dead stuff you have to pull out. i know there was quite a few things i had to dump, somthing to think about.

Chicago, IL

I'm so sorry you didn't get but one thing Mrs Bonnie. I know you have a lot already but it seems so unfair.

Did the order get changed? I thought I was next after you on the list as we are only 70 miles away from each other.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

Anna;
I thought you already got it? I sent to who i thought was next on the list.Oh did i goof.If i did i hope jan will send it to you next. I thought i got it from someone named anna.Hopefully they will send it to you next. it just went to michigan, not that far away.I am so sorry i goofed.Jan when you get the box please send it to anna next.Hell to get old.
Mrsbonnie

Chicago, IL

Oh no worries maybe it wasn't a goof maybe the list wasn't the same on here as in the box. I only looked at the first post in this thread and it says I follow you so I was thinking I did. And if you did goof it's not a big deal as you said because it's not far away at all. I wish I didn't understand about the getting old part! I make mistakes all the time and feel like a silly fool.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

well i feel like a silly fool also.lol I don't know if i mixed up the cards in the box or what, i just hate for you to have to wait.oh well.again sorry bout that.
mrsbonnie

Chicago, IL

Oh MrsBonnie I am so sorry I made you feel like a silly fool! There is no reason to as I'm absolutely fine waiting and I'm not in any big hurry to get them. I do have half a mind to send it back to you though after I get it because you didn't get much out of it.

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

thats quite allright, as i said i do have quite a few gessies as i belong to 2 groups that meet every month, so i do get plants from there.but i do apprecaite your offer. thanks again.

Hi MrsBonnie & Anna--

Sorry for not jumping in sooner - I am just not as fast a correspondent as most others here seem to be!

MrsBonnie, I am inclined to agree with Anna about sending that box back 'round to you for a second shot. You are obviously a generous soul. But I'd be willing to bet every last one of us would love to see you get some new treasures as well! That said, I do understand how you feel about being lucky.

Anna, sorry to have "taken cuts" (as they used to say in elementary school). I once got kicked in the rear end for doing that …but that's another story… hopefully you won't be inclined to replay that particular episode!

Anyhow, I will definitely send the box to Chicago when I get it.

Jan

Framingham, MA(Zone 6a)

Hi Jan,
Please go ahead and send the box to Mrs. Bonnie!!! She deserves it!
Tamberlin

Chicago, IL

Oh you didn't take cuts intentionally not like when you got sent to the back of the line, lol. No worries here. I'll be happy to get it whenever it gets here.

Ann Arbor, MI

Actually I got kicked IN the rear end. What can I say -- it was fourth grade -- always a tough crowd…. LOL. No real worries here either, just being a bit silly. :)

Ottawa, IL(Zone 9a)

Hi All;
Thanks for all of you thinking i got jipped. lol really i do appreciate all of your kind words, but really unless there would be something very unusual in this box, i doubt i could use it. I do have plenty of plants, & am trying to be very selective, as my space is very limited, to many plants. lol So please, just send it to whomever is next. & thanks again for all your posts, As usual, what a great bunch of people on daves garden.
