This was taken 3 days later, July 7, I thought the Jay was sick because he had flattened himself out on a bare spot on the ground under the feeder, after a few minutes he got up and looked fine.
My Little Chickadee's Pt. 2
Pelle, the Dees are too darn cute, so are those two you've posted MargaretC. Poor babies! Gotta be hot hot hot!
Thanks Lily!
Margaret, Those are good shots!
Cute pelle!
Thanks pelle, it took me awhile to find the pics I have so many folders. LOL!!
Pelle, it does look as if it's sunbathing. Our birds will find the hottest part of the yard at the hottest time of day in the middle of summer when it can be way over 100F and prostrate themselves with sings outspread. Who knows what their internal temperatures soar to. Almost always they'll have their preen gland exposed. As Loonie said, my understanding is that it exposes mites and other crawly things which can then be preened off by the bird.
Hah! She has got an Elvis-hairdo! LOL. Adorable pix of the Mom. Pelle.
Wow, how neat is that 'critter baffle' you've devised for the bird house Pelle! And how wonderful it's to see that the parent birds really do feeding one another during the nesting period.
I get to watch House Finches and Titmice doing their mating dances, but to watch the male bird feeding his mate (while she's incubating). It's priceless!
Wonderful shots Pelle...you are really giving us a great view of the Dee's and since I only see them occasionally this is a real treat!!
Thanks Rose and Lily!
Here is a front view of the house, I really should have put the smaller lens on the camera but you can sorta tell there are trees on both sides of the nest box. I really hope the babies will fledge and go left out of the nest box (which would be RIGHT in this photo), this would be going the opposite way from where the feeders are where a lot of the Grackles stay put.
The chicks voices are getting louder and stronger all the time. :-)
Awww, just to hear the baby bird voices. How rewarding that's. Pelle, when your Daylilies blooms please include a pix to share.
Hahahahaha. I can picture you in your 'naturale' Pelle. Congrats on graduating to the cane from the walker. I'm happy to see your recovery is speedy. Booo on those HSs.
One fine collection of Daylilies you've got there. And it's so sweet of Mr. Pelle to climb the ladder for the pix.
I'm trying and trying to catch my Dees at the feeder, still haven't got a result here. Sigh!
I know, their really tough. I would imagine that their "no lingering" policy keeps them alive a lot longer though.
So much fun to watch the progress on your thread Pelle, I find it so nice to see Dad, bring food to Mom.
Nice lilies, what do you do to your honeysuckle vine to keep it so low?, Do you trim it, and and is there support there for it?
Thanks Lily.
Hi burn, Yes there is a trellis for it although it could have used something a lot higher. Yes we trim it and we try to keep it somewhere in the 8-9 ft. range.
Thanks Pelle that's good to know. By the way, it looks really nice and full.
Thanks burn because that was it's first year. It blooms way more than that now.
Very nice thread Pelle!! Glad the Chickadee family has kept you occupied while you are on the mend. Really sorry I have not posted sooner...hope you heal quickly so we can see more of your wonderful Cape May threads. ;)
Burd
The male species! LOL
Well she wound up coming out of the nest box after I went inside to upload pics. She really does not like the being photographed at all! As soon as I came out again she zipped back into the box. :-)
During the very high winds today the tree just to the right of the nest box split in half. Luckily it fell backwards going away from the box. Winds are still very high and the parents (including myself) are a bit anxious. More winds predicted for tomorrow. :-(
Oh my!!! Thank goodness it didn't fall on the box.
I know. I keep looking out into the darkness to see if the nest box is still okay cause the wind is still crazy. We've lost power 3 times in the last hour.
That is so funny about mom staying in the box! lol
I hope the wind subsides soon Pelle. Nan I was thinking the same thing. She (Mama Dee) doesn't care much for publicity. LOL
It's really chilly here today at just 47 degrees right now quite windy and overcast. I just sat on the porch for almost 20 minutes waiting for any sign of the Chickadees when finally Dad came around to relieve Mom for a while. During this big wind storm my mind definitely thinks of all the birds with nests in the trees.
I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one that thinks about all the nests in the wind. Our trees are strong, but I've seen some of the nests in them and only a miracle could keep them together.
Glad you got to see dad come to relieve mom.
